Default Convection ovens

Looking to buy a convection oven, big enough to roast a small turkey.
It should also have both bake and roast modes (bottom heat only, or top
and bottom). Mid-range prices are ok, like up to $300.

Having only website pics to go on, most seem to have poorly designed
controls, like many microwaves do. Anybody here have a suitable model
that has sensible controls?

Most convection ovens are toaster oven sized these days. The one I used to have could roast a large chicken and had primitive controls. It was a sheet metal box with heating elements and a fan. All I needed was good temperature regulation. It's the cooks job to control the cooking time, not the oven's. The one I had back in 2000 cost about $65. It was a cheap, versatile, appliance that performed beautifully and was cheaper to operate than the range oven.

My recommendation is that you look for a simple, cheap, oven and don't worry about the controls. OTOH, it might be that there are no cheap, simple, counter-top ovens being sold these days. Good luck in your search.

What makes controls sensible or not? Evidently the desighners thought
their controls were but you have other ideas.

I have the idea that you should be able to look at the controls and see
'this is where you set the temperature and this is where you set the
time'. It's obvious that some designers have a different idea.

I have this one and it's larger than the Oster and I am
extremely pleased with it and it's on the shelf at Wally
World. You won't have to order it. If you want one with
digitals controls they also have that one but it's around
$100.00.

The Oster allegedly has convection and it is a model I looked at, but
ATK and other reviews chose either the Cuisinart or the Breville. I
expect price to reflect something about quality so I'm not sure the
Oster and other $100 models are capable of actually circulating air like
a convection should, and lasting. The question was asked in the hope
that somebody has owned some of these things.

How about a pressure oven? A turkey will fit and can be cooked in an hour.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KIYWDTO

There is also a rotisserie model and a slightly smaller model.

This will do anything any convection oven can do, do it better, and do
a lot more... yes it will roast/rotisserie a turkey.

You need to get out more. The one I posted, the B&D,
can indeed, be bought at Wal Mart. Why do you think I said
it's on the shelf there and I am pleased with mine? I
bought mine around the middle of May and it's used on an
almost daily basis. It will easily accommodate a 9x13
Pyrex dish, the dish that has handles.

Nobody has to go to a restaurant supply store and pay those
exorbitant prices for a countertop convection oven.

Good grief.

And I own the oversized B&D and it works great for my kitchen
needs. He's asked for opinions and now he's received them from
two owners (you & me) but seems to not believe us.

It wasn't clear from your post that you owned one. I had doubts about
the convection flow because reviews always choose the one with the most
even browning and none of the reviews ranked it highly. How is it for
evenness?

The B&D doesn't have convection according to the description, and
doesn't seem to be high enough to contain a large chicken for example.
It has a large toast capacity but width without height doesn't do what I
want. These things never specify internal dimentions. Can you say
roughly, without necessarily measuring, how high it is from rack to
heating elements?

Being able to fit at least a 9X13 pan would be necessary - for me anyway. It's discouraging to see that the one I had years ago was bigger than the ones available these days. I'd probably get something like this today - It's 70 bucks and sorta large and has a rotisserie.

I stated on July 26 that I own it when I posted the link
to Wal Mart. Yes, it does have convection capability and
like regular full size ranges that have convection things
need to be rotated halfway through cooking. Will it
accommodate a small turkey? I don't know, I've not tried
to cook one it in.

This model is also available, on the shelf, at Wal Mart. A
9x13 pan, WITHOUT handles, will fit in it. But it's not as
large inside as the B&D. When shopping for a new one I picked
up a Pyrex 9x13 dish, the one that has been available to home
cooks for a zillion years. I headed back to the small appliance
section with it and it would not fit inside the Hamilton
Beach but would fit with an inch to spare in the B&D.

It sounds like only the Cuisinart-class models have convection fans that
work. I suspected that from the ATK review which is why I asked. But
that still leaves a lot of models to choose from.

the oster is also about 15/16 inches deep

and if you are so moved you can get a large turkey and have the butcher
cut it down the backbone, over a certain size turkeys are mostly meat
and this way you have one you can freeze

I saw the model at Target and it's big enough, but I was curious about
why ATK didn't even mention it as a "value buy option" when they tested
them for even cooking.
