Oh we don't skimp on food but you have to remember that not all folks like
to have fancy, fancy meals all the time. I worked that way for about 15
years so when we go out we tend to eat more ethnic foods or things that I'm
just not too good at more than anything else. It's not because we're
cheap, it's because it's what we like!

Some of the best meals we've had on vacation were some of the cheapest.
Sitting along the banks of the Hudson River with a bottle of wine, piece of
cheese, loaf of bread was absolutely phenomenal. Sitting in a park
overlooking Florence in Italy was equally good with the same meal, just a
better cheese. Each of these meals was less than $10 for the two of us and
more memorable than some that cost $200.

Nah.. but he was entertaining.. I wasn't old enough to care about
cooking when he was on tv...
But I do miss his entertainment..

As I understand it, he was widely respected in the South as a
storyteller and keeper of local lore. I suspect he was coerced into
the cooking tv genre as a saleable cultural oddity more than anything
else. Regardless, I'm glad to have seen him.

Very true about food not being an object to skimp on while you're on
vacation. I guess it just turns out that what we like is cheap!

We used to go to Florida for a month or two in the winter, staying in
an rv park. There is this little restaurant in St. Cloud, just south of
Orlando, that we went to at least once a week. It was recommended by
friends, because we wouldn't have gone there on our own. It used to be
a gas station from the looks of it. "Bonnie Lee's" has the best fried
chicken I've had anywhere. They don't open until 4 pm. but if you're
not there by quarter to, you have a wait. They have a limited menu, and
if you go there after the supper hour, you run the risk that they are
out of something. They buy their chicken every day and the quality is
top notch. Anyone that's in the area, I'd recommend you give it a
try....But they aren't open Sunday or Monday. It's family run, and I
miss it.....we haven't been south for more than two years....Sharon

See now this is the type of place that we would love! A good friend
chicken with some good creamed potatoes and/or real mac n' cheese is a thing
of beautiful.

Who used to say, "I cry for happy"?

OTOH, it amazes me that people post nasty comments about her (like
this subject). I find Paula Deen's mannerisms and recipes very
unappealing yet I have no need to post any articles detailing what I
think about her on rfc. If I don't change the channel it's my own
fault.

I'm willing to consider that it's not jealousy that drives people
insane over RR, but then, what is the impulse? Sandra Lee at least is
funny

For myself, it's interesting to me when people notice the same things
that I do.

But I have never said anything nasty about her. I find her far more
watchable in her $40 and travels show. I can't watch 30 minute or
Inside Dish, she's incredibly grating to me in those.

A scream. Same deal, it's funny to me to see if other people notice
the same things.

I think Rachael invites comment in the way that Emeril used to in his
heyday; complete overexposure, you couldn't get away from her at
one point, if you wanted to watch FoodTV. Just a theory. Why do
some people get all the attention, good or bad. It happens.

Actually it's more like picnic fare with sides like mac salad, potato
salad, baked beans, cole slaw. Chicken, or fish, fried or broiled. A
three piece dinner ends up with 4-5 pieces and we always got an extra
pint of some kind of salad, a to-go container and we had another meal
for the next day. ..Sharon

Helen, if you are really asking, I believe it was Miyoshi Umeki's character
in the movie version of "Sayonara."

If not, I'm sorry for being too literal.

RR: She's cute. She's rich and famous. She has 2 tv shows, and she's
starting a third..

Now, show me a "gazillion" more people who have these qualities.

That's why I think you're jealous.

Then you don't know me. Not surprising. I have zero desire to
be famous, have a show, never mind 2 or 3 or 5. And I hand it
to her, she works hard to have those things, and I am not interested
in working that hard any more.

That leaves cute and rich. That's not uncommon.

To be jealous of? Nothing. You're being ridiculous. If it makes you
sleep better at night, feel free to think I'm jealous of Rachel Ray. Or
anyone.

Of course, you might want to wonder why you're first thought is
someone is jealous. Maybe you're the guy who said we're jealous
of people who have cell phones, too. Yeah. Right.

I wouldn't claim to be representative, but for me, $40/day/person would be
$160/day while traveling. Only in unusual circumstances do I seek to exceed
that.

I have a Justin Wilson cookbook that has an interesting picture of him
holding a filled ladle towards the camera...the caption goes something
like this:

Smell them aromas, see! But don't reach for it, lest you be pulling

I never had a problem eating well on $40/day/person or less, (mostly
less), on vacation. I seek out the places were the locals go. I guess
if there were something really spectacular, I'd try it.

I think most overpriced joints are made for show.

$10 for a 4 ounce plate of micro-greens w/vinaigrette doesn't appeal to
me.

It is not difficult at all to spend less than $40 a day and eat well. You
have to know how to travel. and what to look for. Sure, I've spent much more
than that at times for one meal, but some of the best food I've ever eaten
was less than $10.

Last week I took a day trip with my wife. We had breakfast on the way to
Gloucester, a light lunch, and then a fantastic seafood dinner at the
Causeway restaurant. Total food for the day for the TWO of us was about $55
with tips.

Last April in Venice, a couple travelling with us had a lunch (sandwiches!)
in San Marcos square for $127, while my wife and I had lunch for $18
including wine. Lunch in Florence cost me close to $100 for the two of us
because of the location. For dinner, I walked two streets over and paid less
than $10 for a simpler , yet very good dinner for two. If you want to sit on
the piazza and dine, you pay for it and pay dearly at some places.

Rachel NEVER tips properly!!! I've seen episodes where she spends $17.00
on a meal then leaves a $1.00 tip. To tip properly (15-20%), she could
never spend more than $35/day before tip. I'll bet most restaurants she
visits are glad to see her go.
