Yes, but you're being reasonable. I was trying to adapt to Gary.

Main bans I know of is your dog has to be on a leash and you have to
wear a mask due to covid.

Dogs do NOT have to be on a leash in parts of the actual beach at the
water but those aren't the whole beach, just sections of it. Big
sections from my understanding...

It's not. The leash on dogs is statewide and we might be a little
unique in having public parts of beaches that are leash free. Sadly, a
few badly trained dogs caused them by attaking other dogs or people.
Used to be leash free allowed all along the beach.

I guess you'll always have the risk of a few irresponsible owners.

Don't go by that "tourist friendly" VB govt site. They conveniently left
off many of the beach restrictions.

What a joke that list of prohibited things is. It's worse than that.

What other things are prohibited? Which ones annoy you the most?

They should allow grilling. As long as the people doing so protect their grills from going off, meaning starting a fire outside grill area. Sand and fire extinguishers come to mind. They should allow fires, as long as the people involved have safety precautions in effect. People like to hang around fires and talk and hang out.

There probably were lawyers involved.

I'd like to believe that people don't just sit around making up regulations..
It would be preferable to think that they are promulgated in response to
a problem.

For example, some fool fell into a fire on the beach and was
badly burned. So a regulation against fires was needed.

correction: some fool fell into a fire *** on some beach, some place,
any place, in the entire world *** so a prohibition here was needed.

Have you ever been to Virginia Beach on a weekend? When crowded there is
no way to have a safe fire or grill. Hang out around a fire when it is
sunny and 95 degrees? Same with NJ beaches. No way to safely grill
there. Maybe in December.

Just about anything they can think of. Year after year, more rules for
things you can't do. Go to the oceanfront and there are many rules for
bike riding, skating, skateboards, carrying radios turned on, clothes
you can't wear. No unleashed dogs now (contrary to what c-shenk said).
Actually, no pets of any kind allowed. No walking with a snake around
your neck. lol. No surfing in many areas, no swimming in high surf. Even
in the surfing areas, no surfing in high surf. The best surfing days and
we are not allowed to surf. Those idiots. We always ignored that one.
Police would eventually show up and whistle us out of the water. We just
waved and kept surfing. Eventually the cop would give up and go away.

Seriously Cindy, the restrictions are insane. There are many more that I
can't think of right now.

That VB website's list of restrictions was just the tip of the iceberg.
The "no horses on the beach" was a funny one.

They even have some old laws that are still in effect although rarely
enforced. The "Hairy Man Act" is good. No man with chest hair is
allowed anywhere except on the sand beach without putting a shirt on.

Well excuse me. I want people to safely grill and have safe fires. Not dangerous events! You are trying to make all fire illegal which is a false excuse for an event.

Paperwork reduction. There's just so much to do when dead
bodies wash up on the beach.

Why? Do you want to take the kids to the beach with piles of horse
shit? Unless diapered, they don't belong there. I've seen what horse
trails can be like.

On a crowded beach there is no safe grill or safe fire. We have a lot
of coastline in the US and I'm sure there may be some thinly populated
places it would be OK but not in VB or the Jersey shore during the
tourist season.

If you have a fire at night with no crowds, to you think they are going
to really clean up the coals and remnants of the fire?

Have you been to these places in the summer?

Horses crap a lot, and especially when they are in the water. I used to
trail ride in Algonquin Park and were weren't supposed to take the
horses in the water. There was a problem with their crap on water plants
that the moose eat.

All the beach and city park areas I've been to have well marked
bridle paths... people and riders keep to their own areas.

True. Probably doesn't help that pitbulls ae very popular here and
some are poorly trained and socialized.

They have grilling areas, just not 'where ever you want to bring your
own'.

Fires, no but plenty of our campground areas have calderas for beach
fires. Keep in mind this is a tourist spot, similar in ways to
Waikiki. The sands would get all messed up if everyone as allowed to
start a fire where ever they wanted to, then they'd dup sand on hot
embers and folks not knowing, would burn feet on them. I know of no
public beaches anywhere, that allow building your own fire 'wherever
you want on the public beach sand'.

Correct. One of my friends has beachfront property (private) and he
does have a brick pit for grilling or a fire but they only use it for
partys when it's getting chilly.

Correct Ed. While we have an 'off season', it just means fewer guests
and smaller events. I note VB posts try to make it look like there
aren't TOO many people when photo'd for advertizing but reality, it's
pretty crowded. Even Dam Neck is and it's only available to Military,
being on base. Fort Story is a little better but again, on base so
only military can get there.

Put simply, pre-covid, it would be hard to manage 6ft away from
everyone there.

https://www.vbgov.com/residents/anim...s-beaches.aspx

Yes, they are allowed. Main tourist season, restricted to above 42nd
street and below Sandbridge.

As to the surfing, the tourist area has bad rip-tide spots. When one
develops, they restrict it from that area.

Riding a bike through masses of people on the sand who can't even get
6ft away from each other, is insane. It's restricted to sane hours
when the beach is mostly empty. Clothing can't display things like
'**** You Asshole'.

List one you have a problem with other than basic saftey for all when a
riptide develops?

Ewww! That reminds me of an old futurist short story where everyone had to go
through a tunnel to get to the beach. At random times, the tunnel was
suddenly closed and all within it were gassed. Everyone knew the risk but
still strived to get to the beach.

Even before the "no horses" law was created, no one drove their horses
down here anyway. No farms that even have horses other than way down
south and they didn't transport them up here to ride on the beach.

OTOH, I've seen horses at the beach here occasionally. Those are ridden
by police...down the boardwalk and on Atlantic Ave. Although those cops
are on active duty, the horse thing is mainly a tourist attraction,
summers only.

On the entire Atlantic ocean coast in Virginia, there are no campgrounds
near the beach and no calderas for beach fires.

Name one.

No, not just a tourist attraction. If you ever watch New Orleans, they
use horses too. It gives the police a good view in crowded places, move
fast and are not as readily blocked as a car.

What is the point of police horses?
The College of Policing claims that research in public order situations
has shown that horses have a pacifying effect on crowds and officers can
better monitor crowds from their vantage point. Horses have been shown
to disperse crowds and reassure residents and may bring a swifter end to
public disorder.

Half a ton of horseflesh and those steel-shod hooves are hard to argue with..
