Mirrors work better. Mirrors work better for the field of view that they show. Sometimes you have to turn your head to get a clear picture of what's going on back there. If you can't turn your head that far (even due to temporary injury), a clean backup camera is helpful. If I relied on the backup camera, I would have gotten out and cleaned it. Don't suggest that people without a full range of motion stop driving. I'm sure you'll be in that position someday. Cindy Hamilton |

We left Wednesday mornings for seniors road tests. I very quickly learned to hate Wednesdays. You would hope that 65 years of driving would mean they knew how to drive. In reality, it was the result of 65 years of learning bad driving habits. |

Problem is that the adhesive that is available for attaching the mirror can't withstand summer heat and the mirror falls. I wish car manufacturers would install these mirrors when producing the vehicle. They aren't that much bigger that the mirror that is placed in a vehicle now. Maybe I will try Gorilla Glue. Mirrors work better. I use my rear view mirrors all the time, I don't bother much with the rear camera, it's always so filthy that it doesn't tell me much. I much rather the rear view mirror and the side view mirrors. |

I don't know about the UK, but here in Canada it is a criminal code offense. The more likely charge here would be for operating an unsafe vehicle, and the fine ranges from $400 to $20,000. I once had to assist in an accident. A witness said the guys' windshield was covered in snow and ice, the driver side window was open and the guy was trying to scrape it off as he was driving down the road. I guess he figured it was safe because he was not going very fast, but he drifted across the road and hit a dump truck head on. It was one of the more interesting corpses I saw on the job. The guy had been thrown into the steering wheel so hard that his chest cracked open. It reminded me of one of those human body models from science class in high school. The ribs were spread and you could see the organs inside. He must had died instantly because there was no blood. |

In Ontario it is an offense snow and ice has accumulated in a manner that would pose a danger to other motor vehicles on the highway if the snow or ice were to fall or slide off. I am not sure a layer of powdery snow blowing off the back would warrant a charge. A bigger problem is snow and ice on big semi trailers. When those things are cruising along at highway speed there can be huge slabs of ice that shake loose, get picked up by the wind, hover in the air for a moment and then fall on vehicles behind. It is hard for drivers to get up on top of trailers to do that. The roofs are no made to support people walking on them and a lot of companies forbid their drivers walking on top of the trailers. There have been some things built to scrape the snow and ice but they are pricey and need someone to operate them and to dispose of the snow and ice that is removed. It would be a costly venture for someone to offer for free for customers, and something most would not be willing to pay for. Personally, I keep a long way for tractor trailers in highways in the winter. |

Repeating the letters on an eye chart is a waste of time, that's not an eye exam. Cameras really don't give an accurate image for driving, they are only good for very low speed driving, like backing out of your driveway... they tell you nothing for posted speed highway driving. Newer vehicles have audible warnings for when someone is alongside or approaching on your rear. Best thing I did recently was to have Catataract surgery, I have brand new eyes and no longer need glasses to drive... should have done it years ago... I now have Superman vision. More than half the drivers over 50 need cataract surgery... reading a chart at the DMV is not an eye exam... those are not administered by optomitrists let alone Opthalologists, those are know nothing clerks. Most people have never had their eyes examined by an eye doctor.... your family doctor is not qualified to eamine your eyes. Vision centers that sell eye glasses are not qualified to examine your eyes. At best they can fill an Opthamogists/optomotrists prescription, maybe... optomotrists are not doctors. Optomotrists can only determine what power lenses you need but mostly they order the lenses and fit you with frames. Only an Opthamologist is an eye doctor. |

BTW, almost took a guy's door off yeasterday.
He didn't look, was street parked across from anothe street parked car. It still left room for 2 cars to pass. He had those super dark windows so it was not obvious any one was in it. I was 10 feet from his bummper with a car passing the other way headed in, going 25mph (speed limit). He flipped the door open and I slammed the breaks honking, he managed to shut the door just as I stopped, mid-way even to his back passenger door. Fact is, most people on that road are going 35 and his door would have been history. Hopefully he learned to look first before opening a door ino traffic. |

Here's a post about "cars with snow", check out the second pic, that '58 Olds is ENCRUSTED with snow, as are the others, very few cars had rear defrosters: https://theoldmotor.com/?p=183644 'Four Interesting Snow Shots From Days Gone By February 18, 2021 Todays lead image and the picture below are press photos that originate from an unknown Syracuse, NY, area newspaper. The shot above of a mystery car includes an Oswego man in December of 1958 taking a photograph of the vehicle buried under a mushroom cloud of snow. Double sided tape also does a much neater job than epoxy... simply apply small pieces of the tape to the mirror, peel off the backing and apply the mirror exactly where you want it and will be good for many years... not necessesary to cover the entire surface. Epoxies are liquid and tend to run, tend to make a mess. And once they cure the only way to remove that mirror is to install a new windshield. Double sided tape scrapes off easily with a safety razor, like a decal. |

The stuff works pretty good although it's tricky to apply and you need to read the instructions and make sure you understand the procedure before you try it. If you make a mistake, you're kind of screwed. Gorilla Glue sounds interesting though. I'll need you to try it first before I do. https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-8184...dp/B000HBM4TC/ |

Only an Opthamologist is an eye doctor. https://www.degreequery.com/degree-need-optometrist/ They are both 'Doctors' but the Optometrist is a Doctor of Optometry. Opthomologists are MD Doctors and can do surgery. |

The people who administer those tests at the DMV are well aware that it is just a screening tool. I did that job for a short time. If you fail that you are required to see an optometrist to get corrective lenses. I have a cataract starting in my left eye. When it gets bad enough I will have to get the surgery. |

How in sam hill is the bag going to be frozen to a dry mirror? I find it's amazing that it works in much colder and wetter climes than Virginia. But of course, you are speaking from experience that it doesn't work there. Good grief. |

My car is often covered in a light layer of snow or slush when I'm done driving someplace in the winter. Cindy Hamilton |

I don't drive in snow. Down at the Oceanfront, along the boardwalk, are signs with about a dozen red circles with slashes and pics on them. Showing what you are not allowed to do. Too funny. Would have been easier to have signs telling you what you are allowed to do. |

Nice luxury to have. If I come out of work at 5:00 and there's six inches of snow on my car, I still have to drive home. Cindy Hamilton |

Snow days were our busiest days. I had to make it to work. The good thing was that by the time mu day was done the roads were usually cleaned up. |

It could be Marxist oppression that's causing all these bans on innocent activities. |
