Default Wendy's Chile

Wendy's chile is nothing special but comes in handy in a pinch or when I don't feel like wasting a lot of time cooking. I buy a bucket of the stuff - family size, good for 6 or 7 meals. I eat the same thing 6 days in a row. But I doll it up a bit first.

In 3 or 4 tablespoons of olive oil I saute a bunch of sliced onions, sliced mushrooms, diced bell pepper, a jalapeno, and maybe some celery if I have any on hand.

I let that go for about 6 or 8 minutes, then add a bunch of roughly cut parsley, a pound or so of skinned roma tomatoes cut in chunks, and about 6 cloves of garlic, half of them sliced thinly, the other half minced fine. I put a lid on it and let it go for 20 or 30 minutes on low. Then I toss it into a large container with the Wendy's chile and I'm good for 6 days, 7 meals total. Each day I put a small amount of already cooked chicken or meat into a bowl and ladle some chile over it, then stir and top it with already made rice I have in a container in the fridge. I am proud of this meal and just had to share it. Thanks.

I would never take that stuff home to eat. I have eaten it there. Can't
remember the last time I ate any though. I'd sooner have canned chili or
even make it myself. Very easy to make.

The easiest is a recipe I found from a magazine some years ago called Bean
Corn Chili. Simply three different cans of beans and a can of corn with a
jar of salsa added. Heat through and serve over rice. I never really follow
recipes though. You could easily add meat. I generally add whatever I have
in the house that might go well in there. Tomatoes, onions, cilantro, etc.
Also add chili powder and sometimes cocoa powder. I don't serve it over rice
any more. Good but too many carbs for me.

Wow, I saw your name and was expecting something negative. What a pleasant surprise. But I know this could be the calm before the storm. I mentioned before, I am a prepper more than a cook. I make lots of things separately then toss together and add spices and so forth at the end.

Tomorrow I will be making another good dish - this one with ingredients all made at home, no fast food stuff.

1 cup bulgar rinsed then covered slightly with water to absorb. It balloons up, no cooking required. Put to fridge in small container.

1 and 1/1 pounds boneless pork chops, thick - broiled and put to fridge in container.

In a large oblong container I place the following washed items - 2 scallions, both green and white. 1 or two raw crowns brocoli. 1 lemon cut in quarters.

1 bag of spinach, kept in it's own bag, in the fridge.

1 large carton cremini mushrooms, in the fridge.

I washed and dried bunch cilantro in a plastic bag in the fridge.

Now, each day I cut up some of the pork into a working bowl, then add a handful of the fluffed up bulgar. I slice some white and green from the scallions into the mix. Then slice some cilantro in. Also a clove of garlic. Then 2 or so of the mushrooms sliced. I add the juice of 1/4 lemon and some olive oil and add salt and pepper and cayenne peoper and stir.

Here's the kicker, sounds odd but it's good, and it's optional. I take a jar of sauerkraut and put about 1 large tablespoon into the mix along with a few shakes of carrowway seeds. I stir everything up and let sit all day in the fridge while I'm out. When I come home I put the stuff on a plate and cover it with a doubled paper towel and put in the microwave for 3 minutes. The meat and bulgar do not overcook, but the raw veggies cook down. I don't think many people would guess all that stuff was not made at the same time. I eat the same thing for 6 straight days, then switch to something else, or make the same meal again if I'm not bored with it. The prepping method is good for many reasons - cost, nutrition, and freshness. Thanks for your post.

Weird, my first post took without hitting the post button. I was saying I understand, and I even prefaced my earlier comments by saying Wendy's chile is no big deal. I make my own food, but every so often I go through a transition phase where I don't want to cook a bunch of stuff for my 6 day spread. At that time I'll go with the Wendy's chile with my own stuff added, or I'll get some pork and chicken Mai fun (rice noodels) from a takeout chinese joint and doll it up with raw napa cabbage, scallions, garlic, cilantro, and lime juice. I mix it up. It looks odd because the veggies are still uncooked. But they are fragile. Once the mixture is complete I keep it in the big bowl in the fridge and each day put a bunch of it on a plate and cover with paper towels for 3 minutes in the micro. The veggies cook down really nice but the other stuff does not overcook.

I don't care for canned foods. I use canned chick beans to make my own hummus using a mortar and pestle. It's great, I must admit. But I am not much into canned foods. I am sure the Wendy's chile is full of salt, but by the time I get done adding my own stuff to it, dolling it up a bit, I get twice as many meals out of it and the salt content is reduced quite a bit. I don't like when there are too many dark kidney beans in the Wendy's chile, and they are often undercooked. The other day I saw the mixture getting a bit thin, so I cooked up some beans with nothing added, great northerns, and tossed them into the mix. It was good. Thanks for your post.

When I make beans or do the Wendy's doll up procedure I eat it with saltines but also at times will add fritos around the sides of the bowl after microwaving it, or sometimes even before. I like sour cream as well. As a kid, my mother's side, not great cooks like my father's side, but everyone has something to offer - they would serve apple or blueberry pie with a large cold dollop of pure sour cream on top. I'm telling you it's better than ice cream. I like cold pie if I'm going to eat it, which is not often. Anyway, when I tell people about sour cream going well with pie they get this scrunched up look of disgust on their face - but it tastes a lot better than it sounds. And it's risk free. You can put the sour cream to the side. If you don't like it the pie is not ruined.

What a creative meal extender for a weeks gnoshing. I think it sounds
damned tasty.

I dig Tabouhli, so Bulgar wheat is A-Ok.

I like how you've factored the raw veggies coming to done. Healthy fare

Yeah, I am aware of that, but I don't care now and then when I am not in the mood for cooking a bunch of stuff. I doll it up pretty good with natural stuff. I know I could just make my own beans and doll them up too, which I do now and then - but sometimes when lazy I go with the family sized bucket of Wendy's chile. I am not a big time fast food person. They don't have a Popeye's chicken around here. To me, most fried chicken chains are about the same. However, I have to admit I really do enjoy Popeye's red beans and rice. I used to get a small container nearly every night while driving cab in L.A., enough to keep up the energy, not enough to bog me down. I asked them for the ingredients and they gave me a small pamphlet. It was all dehydrated natural stuff. The only ingredient some might be turned of by was monosodium glutomate. I think Popeye's read beans and rice is good tasting stuff. Haven't had it in years though.

I add a few packets of that stuff to the mix as well. I think their chile would be better without the big dark red kidney beans, which to me seem under-cooked some of the time. But beans are so easy to make I usually do my own. I only go with Wendy's when I'm in no mood for a bunch of kitchen work. And for me cooking is work. I do not cook with love, I cook with mathematics. But it comes out lovely anyway, sometimes.

I got all the preparation out of the way tonight. I will broil the pork tomorrow. It will be good in the fridge for 6 days. The raw veggies get rotated, so sometimes I'll keep humming with that same meal for weeks at a clip.

Now the funny part is this: I purposely did a bunch of chores this week, mostly on foot. Today I walked 4 miles to the market and got a bunch of stuff to make sure I wouldn't need to go out during Saturday's football games. They come on at 4 and 9pm eastern standard time. I knew that in advance. I prepared ahead. I was proud. I also bought the weekend edition of the USA Today. I get it only the weekends for the sports page. I got all the work out of the way, thinking about it all week, then laid down in bed to read about the games - and that is when I noticed that the games scheduled for TV would be airing on NFL Network, which I don't get....! I was mad at first but then I had to laugh. I'm in a $20 weekly pool going up against 17 other people, been doing it for years. I instantly looked at the bright side: Sometimes when I watch a game the team I'm rooting for will fall behind. If I turn it off and come back to it later I might find them ahead. It's almost as if the players are whispering under their helmets, "Our systems show he's got the game on - let's lose this one for him." So in a way I'm glad I don't get NFL Network and won't be able to watch the games. I'll find something else to watch, or not watch TV at all. Maybe I'll get lucky and the TV will break down Saturday night and I won't have to watch Sunday's games either. Anyway, it was funny how I put in all that preparation for Saturday's games only to find I can't get them on my TV anyway.

on your lawn, he just can't help himself. He won't stop, even if you

I get that on a semi-regular basis and it is by far my favorite fast
food side.

Their mashed taters with Cajun gravy is excellent as well.

What I dig about what you're doing is that it's perfect for someone
living alone or minus a spouse, or even working crazy hours.

It's like super efficient "build a bear" cuisine, and you obviously like
it too.

Not trying to play devil's advocate here, but I know what he means, there is a lot of garbage in the chile. But I don't care because I don't eat that kind of stuff every day. I think it is ok to eat occasional garbage when your diet is otherwise consistently healthy. In fact, oddly enough, if taking a really good crap is any indication of health (and I think it is), sometimes after a rare fast food treat my turdal evacuation is exceptional in all ways, length, girth, and so forth. I am not anti salt, fat, or sugar - I just eat really good food most of the time, so I don't let a bit of garbage bother me now and then. In fact, we are garbage, aren't we? I mean, we are recycling bins of the highest order. We can handle it. We may eat germs from time to time, but let's not forget that we too are germs.

Anyway, it was funny how I put in all that preparation for Saturday's games only to find I can't get them on my TV anyway.

Sorry, I have no computer. I am using the library's computer. They have a great library in this town. I am looking for a cheap computer for home to use only as a typewriter, then use a thumb drive to send and receive from the library. Gets me out and keeps me feeling pleasantly arrogant about not buying into the trap of owning too many new devices, all of which will one day be hooked into only one device, and if it breaks down you lose everything. I really hate being plugged in all the time. I had an old Mac but it broke down last year. For a good two years I used it at home even without internet - used a thumb drive to send and receive at the library, had to take a bus for it. Now the new central library is open, only a 10 minute walk from where I live, and they have over 50 computers and I've never once had to wait. So I could stream here, I suppose, but would need to get headphones from the front desk. I hate buying into every new thing that comes down the pike. Being are being enslaved with the stuff whether they know it or not. Thanks for asking though.

Oh, I get it now, you're talking about the game. Nah, I am a masochist, so I will make it an enjoyable experience doing without watching the game. I appreciate your input on this matter, but I really can live without watching two games this week. If the whole package goes to NFL network, the whole year, in that case I would probably break down and order the service for my apartment. But for two games, I'd really rather enjoy being out of the loop for one day - the lack of involvement, knowing I don't NEED to be involved - actually brings me pleasure. I will do other things during the games. I enjoy knowing I don't NEED things. It makes me feel GOOD. Thanks for your concern and your efforts.

Yeah. But it's not as tough as it sounds. And it lasts 6 days in the fridge. I admitted out loud to all that I am an impatient person at times in some ways and that it was my fault the sausages got burned, although they were edible and were in fact pretty good. But I don't like the greasy feel in the air from browning a lot of stuff. I did however broil a pound and a half of boneless pork loin today and will be adding bits of it each day to another meal I prepped last night consisting of fresh raw veggies and bulgar blown up in water to a fluff like nicely cooked rice. I like my prepping style. Yep, you are right, I can do all that but can't be bothered to pan fry sausage. You are right. You are right. You are right.

Gets me out and keeps me feeling pleasantly arrogant about not buying into the trap of owning too many new devices, all of which will one day be hooked into only one device, and if it breaks down you lose everything. I really hate being plugged in all the time. I had an old Mac but it broke down last year. For a good two years I used it at home even without internet - used a thumb drive to send and receive at the library, had to take a bus for it. Now the new central library is open, only a 10 minute walk from where I live, and they have over 50 computers and I've never once had to wait. So I could stream here, I suppose, but would need to get headphones from the front desk. I hate buying into every new thing that comes down the pike. Being are being enslaved with the stuff whether they know it or not. Thanks for asking though.

That's even worse. I was a heavy drinker for years. No AA for me, just can't handle it anymore. Will do it when and if I feel the need, I'm not on any program - but I can't handle the loud noise of a bar without drinking. The results of the final game just came in. KC won for me. I only have one game right with a bunch of people ahead of me, but I like my picks for tomorrow and will be able to watch them on TV. I am hoping the clowns ahead of me went with a lot of favorites and will go down with them while I picked only 3 favorites - Baltimore, Carolina, and Atlanta on Monday night. I enjoy the pool. I don't pick game by game. I pick only the favorites that stand out to me, then kick back and hope the others in the pool knock each other out of it. That has happened once this year already early on one week when I picked only one favorite and won. I can see it happening. Anyway, did not stress a bit over not watching the games. I did some chores, then came down here to our building's computer room - one computer, amazed it's still working, and posted into another group a bit before coming here. I hate sports bars, the multi screens, etc.

The best NFL experience I ever had outside my own TV was when I lived in L.A. and hung out at a poolroom in Hollywood for 10 years, hanging out, working there from time to time - and one night the L.A. Rams were playing a Monday night game but it was blacked out because attendance did not meet league requirements. But the owner of the poolroom knew a guy who worked at ABC, so he piled a bunch of us in his car and we drove in and he gave the name of the guy to the man in charge of the gate and he let us through.

We went in and found a room. No commercials. It was a feed. The room was like a little theater with rows of seats elevated slightly going backwards.. The game came on and the lights dimmed. A few employees who were off duty were in the room. The chairs were filled. It was the 49ers, who sucked at that time, vs the Rams - and I was rooting for the 49ers. It was great.. About half the room was screaming for the Rams, the other half for the 49ers, like we were actually at the game. No commercials either. Everybody was going nuts. No arguments, just two sides vehemently rooting for their team. After that a sports bar would be a major step down.

Well, I'm going to tell you now what I told you before - I actually enjoy when threads go off topic. This one has. If I don't like the direction it takes or feel I have nothing to offer in the way of advice or humor or anything else, I'll bow out. Otherwise I'll stick with the thread. I don't think any thread can get really large without going off topic. I don't mind 'trolls' either, as long as they're not mean spirited. Even that is ok, but not all the time. I don't see too much of that in this group. About 10 years ago or more I hung out at a comedy newsgroup, highly populated, lots of arguments in a fun way, sometimes heated, and then factions developed and the place split apart. Compared to that group this one is peace on earth.. Anyway, I do enjoy when a thread goes off topic, and I sometimes might be a direct cause of that happening, but never with the intention of ruining the thread. I typically don't go in that direction unless I see it's heading that way - sort of like a guy who won't mess with another guy's wife unless he sees they're heading for divorce anyway. Hah hah hah.............
