I'm buying a small chunk of the U.S. BACK from China!! Your priorities about "real estate deals" is perverse!! All YOU care about it seems is your DOLLARS!

I can tell you, the rich Chinese are redefining SLUMLORD!! After getting these two central A/C systems installed in this house, probably when they picked it up CHEAP on foreclosure in 2008 my CHEAP CHINESE SLUMLORD has not have the systems cleaned or maintained, and I JUST DID!! The first floor A/C unit would NOT even maintain 77F with it was 90F outside, and NOW it maintains 77F easily when it's 100F outside!! This house was dissolving into dust under the stewardship of the cheap Chinese!

Not anymore baby! There's a new sheriff in town

If I were standing in front of you I'd probably be punching you in
your face. This has nothing to do with "The Cheap Chinese".
Landlords of all races are frugal with their properties. You're just
an obnoxious, racist asshole.

Actually, the two cutest ones would rather pay their rent to me than to our Cheap Chinese Landlord, and did for July 2017, but I told them they should go ahead and pay rent to our Chinese SLUMLORD as we just extended the date of closing until early October 2017 I believe. They LIKE the improvements I'm making around here!

CERTAIN landlords of any race or nationality are frugal with their
properties. Some are cheap. Some are downright slumlords.

But not all landlords fit any of these descriptions.

I don't think this is the typical landlord situation. John is more than
landlord, he is surrogate parent. That can be good or bad but most
collage kids will look up to an adult that is not their parent. He may
be just what the kids need.

As I've stated before, John is not buying a house, he is buying a
lifestyle. Could even be a reality TV show in 2019. Students of St.
St. Louis or College Kamp Out or Student Sleepover. Maybe it will be
Morals Decending.

In spite of the ridicule, I really hope he is successful and even has a
positive influence on the kids. Given his degrees, he would at least
encourage them to get an education.

There are as many people who have made it big buying IPO's as there are
who have lost a lot. I got in the Go Pro IPO and made a few bucks and
was lucky to sell when I did. Same with Blue Buffalo. He didn't lose
anything by passing. IPO's are a gamble.

That would be a difficult move. By definition, they are not taxed at
the time of redemption. If a change is made, they would have to
grandfather the accounts in place.

The difference would be I don't know what "Go Pro" is. I'm pretty sure
Fed-Ex has been a global name and service for decades.

Blue Buffalo... is that pet food?

The ads are like a music video with young twentysomethings singing and
dancing. Seem geared to the uneducated with an insurance settlement
paid over time. They get the cash now and will be claiming disability
in a few years when the money is gone and they need the medical
treatment. Seems unethical.

I'll give my landlord this: when our water heater shot craps he had it professionally replaced and the new one works great!

But to let his handyman dump gloppy black roofing tar all over the beautiful red clay tiles...

I try to stress that this is not a role I wish to play. I'fe said to some already I only have two rules to shared living. 1. Pay the rent and utilities on time. and 2. Respect your fellow housemates and their property. I don't have too many undergraduates, more graduate student types who are generally more mature. Not that we never had drunken parties!

You repeatedly miss the point. Jill already lived in the house she
inherited, had done for years.

Jill gave up her job, her home, and independent lifestyle to move
cross country to live in her parents home and care for them for years
when both became too frail to manage on their own. First she helped care
for her demented father. His illness took a toll on Jill's mother; such
that she in turn needed to be cared for by Jill until she too died.
Looking after her failing mother was not easy either, as shown in the
problems Jill often posted about.

Because Jill gave up her independence to look after them, her parents
were able to remain in the comfort and security of their own home. When
they died, Jill inherited what had become her only home. By then,
property sales in that retirement complex had gone through the floor.

No big deal - my father died very suddenly in Spain and I had to rush
over, get the house sold, stuff packed up and bring my mother back
with me. She lived with us and three kids until she died and I looked
after her while I still worked. Ultimately I had to quit working
because for a couple of the last years she could not be left on her
own.

Franco still ruled Spain back then and I had endless visits from the
Guardia Civil who seemed to suspect a plot of some sort. Only Spanish
friends got me through that. I left my mother in a hotel in London
while I went to Air Canada in Regent St. to pick up a ticket for her
and on the way back became frantic when stuck in the tube for two
hours at Oxford Circus because of an IRA bomb scare.

So don't lecture about taking care of parents - just because people
don't play the poor me card. You don't know what Gary has maybe had
to face in the past, not everybody seeks attention by broadcasting it.

Our current home was chosen for its adaptability to future needs in
old age, so we hope we'll never need to move (or clear the loft and
garage, LOL). It's close to excellent medical services and facilities
and has been renovated for low maintenance and easy later life. Wheel
chair access to all downstairs rooms and garden.Downstairs wetroom
suitable for assisted toileting and bathing (wide/level access shower).
Downstairs bedrooms with space for hoist. Low-window views for the bed
or chairbound.

When we can't manage stairs any more, both of us or the lone survivor
could live downstairs leaving the upper floor as comfortable
accommodation for a live-in companion/ carer (their own bathroom, living
room and bedroom).

It's a completely new situation. Before, they were all in the same
boat; slated the landlord for all the problems in the property.

When John becomes the owner/landlord

a) he becomes the target for every tiny criticism by tenants
b) he's likely to criticise tenants for every little damage or
breakage they inflict on his newly renovated property

c) The nature of John's illness can make dealing with personal
disagreements very difficult for both parties.

2008 was pretty much a bust for everyone in terms of the real estate
market.

My neighbor's house has been on the market for a long time. She's
pretty much stuck until someone buys it. Meanwhile, she's paid to have
it repainted (inside and out) and still has to pay the taxes, etc.

The house on the other side of mine was on the market for about 7 years.
It's a gorgeous house, all the bells and whistles including a fancy
kitchen with all the things people seem to want: granite counter tops,
stainless appliances. It even had built-in wine racks. I watched as
the asking price went down, down, down.

Moving isn't cheap, either. These college kids John will be renting to
probably don't own a lot. They're renting a room in a house. Likely
they can load everything they own in a small truck and they're gone. If
they get friends to help them, just buy a couple of pizzas and some
beer. It isn't that easy when you're an adult with a house full of
furniture.

We're planning something similar - converting the attached 2-car garage
into a handicapped-accessible master suite. The garage roof needs
replacing anyway, so it makes sense to do the extra work at the same time.
Things move very slowly up here, though. I hope the work is done before
one of us needs it...
