Default soft boiled egg cutter

first off: I have googled and read the web.

Now: what do find to be the best soft boiled egg cutter?

I see several types:

scissor

rotate a cutter ring

cigar cutter

impact (drop the ball type)

Any experiences with any of these?

It has been years since I had a soft boiled egg, but we used to tap the top
gently until it broke and just pick the shell off. Doesn't cost a penny <g>

Ditto - never crossed my mind there might be a tool for it. I quite
frequently have a soft boiled egg for lunch, especially since someone
posted a rather odd way to cook them but which works every time, they
are now a quick, easy lunch.

Surely you must realize you cannot make a statement such as "especially
since someone posted a rather odd way to cook them but which works every
time" without sharing! I am all ears!

I can tell you a foolproof way to cook hard boiled but since I never make
soft boiled you must await Lucretia

There is no worst way, sliced hard cooked eggs make great sandwiches,
hard cooked eggs snazz up salads, and one of the best and tastiest
ways to keep eggs from spoiling is to pickle hard cooked eggs... and
how else can you prepare egg salad without hard boiled eggs? I won't
even mention deviled because that's one way I don't care for eggs
unless I've made them myself... and then I'd much rather egg salad.

For two extra large eggs (in Canada) place in pot with 3/4 inch water.
Boil for five minutes. Take off heat, drain then run cold tap over
them for 30 seconds. You would need to vary the time a tiny bit
depending on the size of the egg. It works perfectly every time, just
nicely set white but retaining runny yolk. However many you cook, do
not vary the 3/4 inch water.

first off: I have googled and read the web.

Now: what do find to be the best soft boiled egg cutter?

The teaspoon you're about to eat it with. One tap to make a small crack;
insert spoon tip into crack and push, and it takes off the top of the
egg.

'Zactly... I use a grapefruit spoon but any small spoon will do as
well.

Nothing fancy. Put the egg in a shot glass, whichever end that fits
the glass. Open the other end.

the table knife works just the same. Just tap around the egg top then
lift it off

Maybe I have not done this enough, but that surely has not been a very clean
technique for me. And money is not the issue for this gizmoholic.

I guess it is as clean as your finger nails <g>

I can't say the money is much of an issue to me either, but space is! I am
not sure how many more gizmos I can fit in so I need to be selective

My mother used to make soft boiled eggs for us when we were sick. As I
recall, she just used an ordinary kitchen knife and would remove the top
of the egg by giving it a quick tap with the knife.

Yep, that's the way Mom did it and the way I've always done it. No
special tool required unless you count the spoon you use to eat the egg.

I'm a "slicer" too! I've always found the spoon method too fiddly.

Yes I remember that way) That is what my mother used to do if I didn't
get the top off before she came along with the knife))

I have a serrated grapefruit spoon that removes a good sized piece of
shell intact.

America's Test Kitchen did a test of these and their choice was the
impact style.

Specifically, this model:

http://tinyurl.com/qzwxbnr

Geez, with all the ATK and Cook's Illustrated fans, in here, Ida
thought this particular device was a given. I almost bought one.

I was gonna go big into sous vide (eggs, stk, etc), but changed my
mind. To sous vide a tough round stk so it's melt-in-yer-maw tender
takes 20 HRS!!! I can do the same in my pressure cooker in 40 mins.
I can definitely see the advantage of sous vide in a resto, but for
home cooking it's jes a waste of time/electricity, IMO.

Buy an egg coddler.
Grease coddler.
Crack egg into coddler.
Screw lid on.
Place coddler in boiling water for seven minutes.
Unscrew lid.
Eat soft boiled egg with teaspoon.

Why are you compelled to eat a soft boiled egg in the shell?
