It's an odd kind of practice though that makes little sense anywhere
else that I am aware of. I've also noticed that Americans (Julie does
it a lot actually) will often mention that somebody is an 'African
American' or 'Asian American', even though race or authenticity has no
relevance in the context of the discussion at hand.

For someone to be a certain nationality, they really need to at least
be BORN there... imagine if the rest of the world adopted that
practice, talk about chaos, LOL.

Goodness, a veiled race-bait.

You may not have much experience with ethnic communities in major
American cities then.

We tend to venerate foreign heritage despite being generations removed
from our initial immigrant ancestors.

It's a positive thing, not a debit.

I went to an Ikea store in Brisbane around 15 years ago, I certainly
remember it being a huge store. They might have had an eatery there
back then - can't recall.

I've had a couple of pieces of Ikea furniture - a sofa bed and TV
cabinet (I think). Quality was fairly ordinary IMO.

Sounds okay for what it is. IIRC, the stores are set up so you have to
see everything and there's no 'short cuts' to the cashier/exit? That's
one reason I've only been to an Ikea store *once*

That is precisely the layout, and it's a maddening rat maze experience.

Not to my tastes for shopping either.

Because IIRC, you never needed anything specifically and didn't even
know what sorts of things Ikea sells. You went there to *find* things
to buy? I dunno, I just don't shop that way. I don't make a very good
consumer, I guess.

Racist Brits and Aussies seem to do that. Americans are proud of
their roots, but they have divided their populations into us vs them.

I can't speak for your Ikea stores but ours have connecting doors between
departments if you know what to look for. I imagine they are required
because if there was a fire ...

Not at all a good thing. Canadians don't tend to do that either.

Are they? Many of anglo ancestry seem to want to disassociate themselves
from the nation that spawned an empire that spanned the globe. Then
there is about 10% of the population that are descendants of slaves who
seem to want to blame their current woes on the institution of slavery,
which went down the tubes 150 years ago... 6 generations.

You mean the 'white guilt" tribe?

Yeah well.

Unsurprisingly that institution produced a multi-generational self
esteem deficit.

A sad but observable malady still being acted out.

My biggest problems with Ikea is that I always have to park so far away
from the doors, that I have so much trouble resist grabbing a whole
bunch of extra things I had not realized that I needed and that the
lines at the checkout counters are so long.

Yep.

I'll give it that, but to me it's a time-waster.

Indeed.

You could read this report and ponder if they really do that as much as
alleged:

https://www.minneapolisfed.org/publi...al-communities

Wal-Mart is widely believed to destroy local firms and jobs and to have
a dampening effect on wages. But fedgazette findings suggest the
opposite: Firm growth, employment and total earnings were somewhat
stronger in Wal-Mart counties and, in some cases, even in the retail
sector.

In sum, fedgazette findings suggest that Wal-Mart has a slightly
positive effect on counties where the retailer decides to set up shop.
But the effects are small; one could call the results mostly a wash. As
a result, maybe the most concrete—and surprising—conclusion is that
Wal-Mart's presence (or lack thereof) has little or no predictive power
regarding the economic success or failure of a county.

Wal-Mart is often accused of trampling the local business sector. But
data on county establishments don't support such a notion, at least not
in the Ninth District. The most obvious place to look is at general
merchandise establishments in a county (a business classification that
includes Wal-Mart). Much higher levels of business closures might be
expected to show up in Wal-Mart counties, but the data don't bear that out.

Why even dignify that stupidity with a response?

>Many of anglo ancestry seem to want to disassociate themselves

Indeed. At what point do you cease with playing the racist/guilt card?
It's just part of human nature to exploit or abuse political
correctness (for want of a better term) and sadly a vocal minority do
exactly that. And the naive suck it up like candy. Objectivity has no
place in this topic

Almost every race or culture is guilty of displacing another culture
at some point in their history anyway. But let's just keep it highly
selective who we demonise...

We're really just one big country. Too bad Benedict Arnold's

Slavery is alive and well in the South and being expanded as other
states adopt "right to work".

I have said here before, that we call ourselves Heinz 57. I just sent away
for a DNA kit so now I will know for sure. It is not the one that will tell
me which Native American tribe. Only if there is Native American. Once
that one comes down in price, if applicable I will send for it.
