I bought about 4 tbsp for 39 cents at my food co-op this afternoon.

Good for a couple potfuls chicken egg drop... or one big potful sweet n'
sour... of course you may decide to try it on a nice hot dish of harvard
beets... <g>

That makes sense to me.

I bought a small jar of it from Penzey's, well under $2, which seemed cheap
to me until I read about the prices at Asian groceries.

Still--I have seen Asian and Indian markets and they always seem dirty to
me. I have gone in, looked around, seen some good buys, but I don't trust
them because the stores seem dirty and I don't really know what the
standards for packaging plants in the far east are. Also, who knows what
kind of infestation there might be on those cargo ships? It's all too scary
to ponder. I just pay extra for the (Perhaps false sense of) security from
foods manufactured or packaged here in the U.S. The only imported foods I
will use are canned or jarred.

I don't even like to buy certain types of foods at those closeout stores or
dollar stores, because they don't look particularly clean, and also because
much of their (non-food) merchandise comes from China and again, I'm
concerned about infestation from those freighters.

Call me prejudiced if ya want. I just prefer not to buy food that has even
the remotest possibility to be infested.

This may shock you, but other ethnic groups have cleanliness standards too.
The asian market I visit is spic-and-span and I wouldn't hesitate for one
moment before a purchase. I haven't been to a specifically Indian or
Mideastern market since I lived in Colorado but those places were very clean
as well. hehe, you need to get out more!

I'm very happy to shop at our "ethnic" shops. We do Oriental, german,
Italian, Indian, Korean. I feel fortunate to have these places
available to us.

Try to find an Asian or Caribbean shop. Arrowroot will be vastly cheaper
there.

Nah. I support my food co-op when I can. And it's close enough. :-)

So do I but I used to use a lot of arrowroot and that would have got too
expensive.

That's a great price for arrowroot, although as you've been told it can be
had for less. I applaud you supporting the local food co-op.

But I can't quite figure out, why not simply use cornstarch as a thickener?
It adds no discernible taste to a gravy or sauce, thickens just as well and
you don't have to search for it as a bargain because it's already cheap.
There must be a reason you were looking for arrowroot.

Sure. I've been a member for 25 years -- since its beginning here.

False assumption; I wasn't searching for it as a bargain.

Definitely. Some people find thrills and in illicit drugs -- I'm going
for a new thickener.

The end result isn't like cornstarch either. It's more like
flour - without coloring the gravy white.

The hub brought home a packet of kudzu, after being hit up about it my a
macrobiotic at a healthfood store. Ever thickened with that, Barb?

No, ma'am. I've heard of a kudzu vine -- it's an invasive thing, isn't
it?

Well, now! That it did! My 39 cents worth of arrowroot powder did the
job perfectly. Beck's MIL had never heard of it -- I made this year's
gravy for a change (without a tablespoon of black pepper, thank you).
Y'all were right about the shine and the consistency when cold (and I'd
never doubted it). I'm thinking I'm a convert to the Holy Order of the
Sisters of Saint Arrowroot.

It has become my favorite thickener... :-)

The turkey gravy that I made with it set up overnight instead of going
liquid! It re-heated beautifully. Never had that good a luck with
cornstarch or flour!
