That would also depend on if I have potatoes in the house. I cook them
so rarely, why buy them for them to just sprout? When I have a hankering
for mashed potatoes, open the cabinet door, pull out the container, and
with minimal effort I'm eating them in about 5 minutes. No peeling, or
mashing involved just lots of butter and milk/cream.

Then you need to learn how to prepare instant potatoes. I've found,
generally, the amount of butter and milk they recommend on the package
to leave a lot to be desired.

I despise lumpy potatoes. If a person can't take the time to to make lump-
free mashed potatoes, then why bother? If you're making them for yourself,
that's fine, but don't serve that sloppily perpared dish to guests.

I don't always have potatoes on hand but when I buy them I buy a 5 Lb
bag. We mostly eat oven baked potatoes, very rarely mashed.
Occasionally I'll boil potatoes and we mash our own on our plate with
a fork. Neither of us likes whipped potatoes. Potato and egg omelets
don't require a lot of potato... a good way to use the smaller
potatoes in the bag. We use most potatoes in soups/stews. We much
prefer egg noodles to potatoes. Our favorite way to prepare potatoes:

Folks generally choose to live where it's the most comfortable and
profitable, I'm sure there's some history to that but it's really
more about real life, and that includes the Canadian forefathers.

All you've had is strawman and non sequitur arguments to
my point so far, calling me a troll is your easy way out
to save face, and now you're sucking up to one of the
biggest froggers in here.

If you didn't know already, Greg Sorrow is also Jim Lahey
and also another one of us Bruce's, but you go on and amuse yourself.

You were done when you started with me.

Potatoes are not a favorite here, we'd much prefer egg noodles, always
on board, they don't sprout. Egg noodles cook fast, half the time of
pasta.

You are ABSOLUTELY FALSE, the poorer folks here in the states >>>>greatly<<<< benefit from capitalist market competition...per US Census data most all US lower - incomers have automobiles, cell phones, computing devices, large - screen TV's, microwaves, air con, travel by commercial airlines, and on and on, much of this stuff used to be luxury for a few...the majority of the US poor are also homeowners...food and clothing take up *far* less of a household's income than, say, in 1960...

Plus, social benefits such as Medicaid, housing assistance, SNAP, TANF, childcare, charities, etc. assist the poor in maintaining a better - quality life...

"Poverty" today ain't the poverty of "Tobacco Road" or "The Grapes of Wrath"...

[ It is somewhat amusing to see on the news of Thanksgiving/XMAS turkey/food give - aways these days in the poor areas of Chicago...there is of course plenty of real need, but many of the "poor" queueing up are driving Escalades, have iPhones, expensive clothes and hair weaves, etc...plenty of "bling" abounds..."Ma Joad" types are scant on the ground...]

Here ya go:

https://fee.org/articles/the-poorest...ons-of-europe/

The Poorest 20% of Americans Are Richer on Average Than Most European Nations

The privilege of living in the US affords poor people more material resources than the averages for most of the worlds richest nations.

Friday, August 30, 2019

"A groundbreaking study by Just Facts* has discovered that after accounting for all income, charity, and non-cash welfare benefits like subsidized housing and food stamps, the poorest 20 percent of Americans consume more goods and services than the national averages for all people in most affluent countries. This includes the majority of countries in the prestigious Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), including its European members. In other words, if the US poor were a nation, it would be one of the worlds richest.

* https://www.justfacts.com/news_poore...er_than_europe

Notably, this study was reviewed by Dr. Henrique Schneider, professor of economics at Nordakademie University in Germany and the chief economist of the Swiss Federation of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises. After examining the source data and Just Facts methodology, he concluded: This study is sound and conforms with academic standards. I personally think it provides valuable insight into poverty measures and adds considerably to this field of research.

....

US Bureau of Economic Analysis published a study that provides exactly that for 2010. Combined with World Bank data for the same year, these datasets show that the poorest 20 percent of US households have higher average consumption per person than the averages for all people in most nations of the OECD and Europe:

[>>>Click on the URL for comparison chart, the poorest 20% of Americans have higher consumption levels of goods/services than "wealthy" nations such as Canada, Sweden, UK...]

The high consumption of Americas poor doesnt mean they live better than average people in the nations they outpace, like Spain, Denmark, Japan, Greece, and New Zealand. This is because peoples quality of life also depends on their communities and personal choices, like the local politicians they elect, the violent crimes they commit, and the spending decisions they make.

For instance, a Department of Agriculture study found that US households receiving food stamps spend about 50 percent more on sweetened drinks, desserts, and candy than on fruits and vegetables. In comparison, households not receiving food stamps spend slightly more on fruits & vegetables than on sweets.

Nonetheless, the fact remains that the privilege of living in the US affords poor people more material resources than the averages for most of the worlds richest nations..."

No one wants to kiss you, Mr Lahey.

Btw, you could never pass for Jim Lahey in real
life, perhaps Arnold from Green Acres would work
for you though -

My old dentist died so I went to my wife's dentist. He extracted 4 teeth. I sure hope he knows what he's doing. The old school method is to sew up your gums where the teeth were but my dentist just lets the gums flap in the wind. I sure hope he knows what he's doing.

Yes, or go North and enjoy the Eskimo life, still to this
day. I'd try to buy all of the frozen tundra I could afford
and hope to strike it rich in mineral rights if I had any
money laying around, and then shuffle back south to Niagara.

Well, considering that I'm young and healthy (knock on wood), yes my
intention is to forgo health insurance for now. Clearly not a long-term
plan, but it's something. It costs $150 annually for teeth cleaning and
x-rays, $100 every other 6 months for just a cleaning.

There is a local state-run doctor office that myself, my ex, and
daughter have been going to for years. It's the only
doctor/pediatrician I've met that hasn't ****ed me off enough for me to
walk out on them. I don't get along well with pushy foreign doctors.
They offer coverage based on a sliding income scale if I'm in a pinch.
Otherwise, I haven't truly been to a doctor in years.

Of course, nothing is perfect, but my point in my initial post wasn't to
spark a political debate (I saw that coming however), but simply to
state another side of things not being considered. Take for instance,
the article below on Canadian health care basically pushing people with
rare diseases to commit suicide... that's pretty sad.

And you believed that crap?
FFS they were offering him plenty of care. It was HIS CHOICE to make use
of the M.A.I.D. program that many with ALS choose to use before they get
to the horrible end stage of that disease. And it's not a ****ing
euphamism!!
By the way, the Discovery Institute is a fundie creationist organisation
that is naturally opposed to compassionate end of life options, among
other things.

Americans often seem to think that euthanasia means you might be killed
against your will. It's another case where they are too stupid or
ignorant to see through the misinformation they receive from their
media.

We grant our pets euthanasia if all they can still expect from life is
suffering. Why not ourselves?

No, I don't.

So are Bolivia and Paraguay.

If you think that doesn't happen in the U.S., you're deluded.

It also happens to people who have less rare diseases, rack up a bunch
of medical bills they can't pay, and bottom out.

You could have canines with no cousins, though litters being what
litters are, that's not likely without some major spaying (or
lieutenant colonel neutering).

I had a cousin who murdered someone for money.

I always buy potatoes in 3-5 pound bags. They are fine for 2-3 weeks. If
I see they are getting too old, I'll just cook the rest and freeze them.
Never any fresh potato loss here.

I like the potato flakes too occasionally. I just discovered a small
pack in my pantry. Will use them today or tomorrow.

I always figured that if I lose too many teeth, I could always move to
the hills in West Virginia where that's more common.

For what it's worth, I've had 3 wisdom teeth and one very back molar
extracted in my life. Never any stitches and the gums healed fine.

No. We are in North America. Canadians and Mexicans do not think of
themselves as American.

Here is his obituary:
"Sean Tagert September 14, 1978 - August 6, 2019 It is with great
sadness that we announce that Sean Tagert passed away August 6, 2019
after a long and brave battle with ALS. His last hours were spent in the
comfort of his own home, surrounded by the family that loved him. Our
family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Stephen Burns for his
extraordinary care for Sean. You are a credit to your profession and a
blessing to this community. Similar thanks also to Jennifer Goodson,
occupational therapist. You were a ray of sunshine in our lives. To all
Sean's wonderful caregivers, thank you! You made a difference. Donations
to the ALS Society of BC (mobility equipment) and Caya Society
(communication equipment) in Sean's name would be greatly appreciated."

It's clear that some unscrupulous people cobbled together that article.
