Is Canada the Right Model for a Better U.S. Health Care System?

19 May 2017

[...]

....Still, there are some things we can learn by studying the Canadian system, Pauly argues. Number one, although in many ways the system looks like ours, the system has a much greater emphasis on primary care and less emphasis on specialist care and hospitalization, and on complex and costly procedures. And that probably contributes a lot to the lower spending [in Canada], because while primary care can be good for you, expensive procedures such as for cancer may add only a few months of life but cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Pauly adds, Ordinary people in Canada are healthier than in the U.S., but outcomes for cancer and very serious illnesses are less good there. Its a great place to live as long as you dont get too sick, as one critic put it.

Another fact that might dissuade Americans from duplicating the Canadian model, Pauly adds, is that Canadians have a longer waiting list for things like joint replacement, so if your hips are killing you in Canada, you may wait months for that [surgery] to happen. In the U.S., the orthopedic surgeons are calling you every day, wondering when you are going to come in for your joint replacement procedure. We probably do too many; they probably do too few. But the safety valve for Canada is that they can always come across the border, and have a procedure done here.

I put my instant potatoes in one of these BH&G container. It's very slim,
about the size of a box Hungry Jack potatoes and it's clear. Of course,
many different sizes and shapes to choose from.

I'd like to know where these rock bottom-price dentists are located. I had
an implant about 4 years ago and one (1) tooth was $3500 but that did
include a bone graft. Six months later I went for the implant.

What they are needing are the dentures realigned, not new dentures.

I wouldn't call it dentures in the same way people think of false teeth
but I do have a Maryland bridge and it's permanent. My dentist at the
time told me it would withstand an autopsy; I thought "how comforting."

With an implant, regular dental visits are still part of the game.

Then there is the Senate who would not raise the federal minimum wage
for years and years, but over the same period of time had given
themselves a series of raises which which amounted to about twice the
annual pay of a minimum wage worker.

Yup.

BTW I checked again at the governemt sites. They want over 1000$ a
month each for my husband at me. Reason? I have a fairly high income
(but well under 150K). Basically they charge us enough to subsidize
the rest. I looked at rates outside that set and we'd (even older as we
are) run at 550$ each.

Fortunately we are both retired Navy so have Tricare Prime on me (27$ a
month) and Don has Tricare for life (Free) and Medicare (about 250$ a
month). Our insurance costs will go up when I hit 65 (transiting to
Tricare for Life and Medicare) but 'it is what it is'.

I'll have to add on dental for me once I retire (stop working) but
that's about it.

When there are 4 uppers top side (3 on one side, 1 on another)
3 lowers, not matched to top side remaining ones

Not everyone has strong teeth to start with. Don's issues started as a
kid but the virtual pumice stone dust toothpaste in Vietnam did a lot
of damage to the enamel so weakened then further.

Thats what you do. By the time you are down to 7, you can't eat. They
have to go so you get dentures. Nutrition by then is seriously an
issue that affects the rest of your body.

I can't see the point to instant potatoes... how much effort and time
to pare, boil, and mash a potful of spuds. And flavor and texture
can't compare to real spuds. I used dehy spuds aboard ship when
perhaps ten days at sea we ran out of real taters. I'd save some
parings from the last to add to the dehy so I could lie and claim they
were real.

At large commissaries they have mechanical veggie peelers; a large
rotating drum with an abrasive interior that removes the peel and
water to wash the parings away. For mashed there was a giant stand
mixer. We did use dehy sliced and diced.

Have you ever eaten "Chesters Flaming Hot Fries"? Im a fan. I
assume theyre available since they are Frito-Lay. Theyre red, crunchy,
real spicy, look like skinny french fries, and theres even some potato in
them.

Im there now. I have as many teeth as someone who has had their wisdom
teeth removed. Unfortunately, three of the missing start at the top left
front tooth and go backward in a row.
The rest are ground down and yellow, because all the enamel is gone. My
dentist suggested false teeth, but she recommended seeing a specialist for
better options. I havent made it yet.
Nobody who doesnt live with me can see my teeth. I wear a mask. Corn on
the cob is off the menu, but I could do it under a hood, on a bet.

At you age, you can always become an eccentric.

The management at my employer has the same health insurance that I do.
(Ok, he might spring for the PPO rather than the HMO, but that's his choice.)
A small company staffed mostly by engineers provides the best health
insurance they can afford, and there's not a lot of room for perks for management.

I'd be happy to trade my health insurance premiums for a tax so that everybody
in the country could be covered.

My husband recently went on Medicare and we got him an Advantage supplement.
It covers more than his very generous insurance did while he was working.
Thus far, at least. It's been mostly prescriptions and office visits, with a couple
of rounds of diagnostic imaging.

You and Graham appear to be the stupid ones, but that
doesn't surprise me.

Despite this vast territory for a relatively small population, more than
90 percent of Canadians live within 150 miles of the US border. Northern
Canada is not considered part of Canadas ecumene, or habitable zone,
for permanent human settlement.

Just curious, what does history have to do with most
Canadians living near the US border? Isn't it more
about the climate and their economy being so closely
tied to ours?

I didn't open my mouth, Hammy, I typed the question and then
went and found the answer myself.

And so now you also know the answer.

Much of that time is boiling the taters, set a timer and do something
else.

The climate, and the fact that the damned St. Laurence seaway
is on the southern border.

Why do you think most inland cities are located on a river or other
navigable body of water?
