Brexit 5) Tom Harris: What a fool I was to think voting Leave would make a
difference
"The epiphany I mentioned earlier is my realisation which I confess should
have been clear to me long, long before now that whereas I was in a
majority of voters in June 2016, that does not, and did not, matter. The
only majority that counts is the majority of those who make the real
decisions, the majority of those who know better than the voters. Yes, I was
naïve in believing that voters were ever going to be given the choice as to
whether or not to leave the EU. After all, MPs only voted for the Referendum
Act itself because they assumed that a Remain result was assured. Whats
that old cynical political saying? Never call a vote unless you know what
the result is going to be. While I have chosen to expunge much of the
referendum campaign from my memory, some of it is coming back to me now: the
sheer confusion, the appalled looks of disgust on the faces of Remain
campaigners who were genuinely aghast at the very notion that anyone would
ever seriously consider Brexit. The terms of debate that cast Leavers in the
role of small-minded nationalists, imperialist flag-wavers and
inevitably racists. Yet still they lost. As if that mattered." - Daily
Telegraph

I don't know. I am losing the will to find out! I agree with Harris though.

I wonder what's worse from the perspective of leavers: May's current
Brexit deal or no Brexit at all.

No skin off my back as we have problems of our own, but it sounds to
me more like the Daily Torygraph where "the truth" intrudes seldom and
only with things that do not matter.

No deal

This is the last post I intend to make on UK politics. I am here for
cooking and all this recent nastiness is getting out of hand.

You probably mean they'd even prefer a Brexit without a deal over no
Brexit or May's Brexit. Thanks. I mean, I kept wondering about that.

I've been watching the news and reading the UK newsgroup. I think the
UK wanting to leave the EU is like a 15 year old girl who tells her
parents she's leaving the parental home. Now the girl is sitting at
the nearest bus stop, crying her eyes out, not knowing where to go. I
hope she either goes back home or finds a decent halfway house.

I'm not saying I disagree with you. Just that it seems nobody thought

do now. Where's big Brexiteer Farage?

The Titanic was a sovereign ship.

You know who loves all this? Putin. He has a retarded child running
the US and the UK and France are eating themselves from the inside
out. All he needs now is to replace Merkel with an idiot and then he
can freely invade the Baltic states.

You got that right sista! The native Hawaiians dream of sovereignty. You can use their song if you like.

You got that right sista! The native Hawaiians dream of sovereignty. You can
use their song if you like.

I would love to give you back to the Great Pacific. I fear that
sovereignty wouldn't last long. Greedy eyes to the west of you would
soon take care of that. It is unfortunate that your islands are about
as strategic as land gets.

At the risk of placing my nose where it doesn't belong, I would suggest that it would be better for the UK to leave the EU. The UK would be as divided as the US if this does not occur. In our case, it won't last very long but in your case, the doubts and resentments and questions about "what if" could be prolonged. 50 - 60 years? Well that's just what I've been seeing in my crystal ball.

It is a question to ponder - what would have happened if Hawaii had not be stolen from the people. My guess is that we would have been a neutral country during WWII. The US would have fought only in the European theater, the allies would have prevailed and Japan would control a big chunk of Asia. You could say that the overthrow of Hawaii stopped Japanese expansionism. Or maybe not.

The EU is terrible. I understand the disgruntlement. But for a
European country, there's one thing worse than the EU: not to be in
the EU.

They don't have any bargaining power, regardless. They're only going
to lose. Only UK'ers whose working life is behind them, don't need to
worry. The young, and especially the lesser educated UK'ers are going
to suffer. But retired UK'ers only worry about themselves. What was
that about baby boomers again, dsi1?

There is a good chance that it would have been colonized by another
country. While it would not have been American territory at the start
of WWII the attack on Pearl Harbor was part of a plane that saw the
Japanese sweep across the Pacific. They likely would have taken Hawaii
and the US, having no strong base in the Pacific, might not have had the
means to fight them. While the experience with Americans was not great,
the Japanese treated the people of conquered lands much worse.

I was witness to the nasty treatment of the Japanese by Occupational

I can't say what would have happened. The King of Hawaii and the Emperor of Japan were on very friendly terms. They were buddies - that was unheard of.. The King made a promise to personally guarantee the safety of the Japanese that moved to Hawaii. The Royals of Hawaii were kind of odd that way; they wanted direct exposure to other cultures, new ideas, and modern technologies.

The Hawaiians should have been more aware of American treatment of native culture and peoples in America. Their downfall was not being more wary of the Americans. They had faith in the American President and people to do the right thing and return Hawaiian sovereignty until the very end. It's quite a sad tale.

Japan, to its credit, formally protested the American occupation every year until it was annexed by the United States.

The old emperor might have extended that olive live to the king of
Hawaii, but the Japanese occupiers in Korea and Mongolia were a lot less
cordial. Given the behaviour of expanding empires over the years, the
British and the Americans were relatively benevoant.

My mother was in a Japanese concentration camp. The Japs were

One atrocity at a time please. I'm talking about the takeover of the Kingdom of Hawaii by American businessmen. The Japanese played no part in this. The takeaway from that is this: Don't trust American businessmen. Be mindful to keep them on a short leash and don't ever let them become the president of you. Mostly, all they care about is getting into bed with anybody that waves a bunch of cash in front of them and making deals, deals, deals.

As far as atrocities goes, everybody does it. All that's required is that one view another human as more animal than a person. Americans did some nasty things to black folks, native Americans, the Vietnamese, Cambodians, and others, including white folks during the War for States Rights. Canadians have relatively clean hands, not counting the random mass murderers, of course.

Having an uncle who was on HMS Exeter sunk in the China Sea after the
Battle of the River Plate and who went on to serve 5 years in the
mines in Nagasaki - he reported that within their limits the guards
were good, the living was brutal but the guards lived no better than
them, being a guard was not considered an honourable occupation by the
Japanese.

Nanking was in 1937, not part of WWII.

No they didn't, but who is to say that they Japanese would not have
snapped it up if the Americans had not been there?

I trust them as much as I trust the American government.... which is
not much.

I would say that even those things are relatively mild compared to some
other countries. Look at the colonial exploits of Germany and Belgium.
South America was colonized by the Spanish and the Portuguese. I
would say that the British and, later, Americans did a much better job.
