I can't say what would have happened. The King of Hawaii and the Emperor of Japan were on very friendly terms. They were buddies - that was unheard of.. The King made a promise to personally guarantee the safety of the Japanese that moved to Hawaii. The Royals of Hawaii were kind of odd that way; they wanted direct exposure to other cultures, new ideas, and modern technologies.

The Hawaiians should have been more aware of American treatment of native culture and peoples in America. Their downfall was not being more wary of the Americans. They had faith in the American President and people to do the right thing and return Hawaiian sovereignty until the very end. It's quite a sad tale.

Japan, to its credit, formally protested the American occupation every year until it was annexed by the United States.
