Default Pick-A-Pepper Mill

My old Penseys pepper mill died so I phoned and they said it was
gauranteed for life and they would replace it with their new model
with metal parts instead of the old style with plastic parts. It
arrived within a week and looks gorgeous, very attractive wood. But
alas, the mechanism is awful, difficult to turn and at its finast
setting spits out chunks of pepper... there is no fine grind, the old
plastic one was much better before it died (plastic rotted away).

So I decided to look for something else and checked Amazon... they
carry too many pepper mills, was difficult to choose but finally I
decided on this $12 OXO:
https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grip...ds=pepper+mill
It arrived in two days, I filled it with peppercorns and gave it a
test drive... PERFECTO! Grinding is silky smooth and will easily
adjust from coarse to super fine. It's all plastic but the grinding
burrs are ceramic so should last forever. It's very easy to fill,
holds a substantial quantity of peppercorns, and allows you to see
when it needs refilling. I was very pleasantly suprised at such a
fine product at such a low price.

The OXO products that I've tried all were very good. So good to know. I
have an old William Bounds grinder that also has salt at top with life
time guarantee as well. They have replaced it 3 times and each
replacement is a cheaper version of the original.

I don't often agree with you, but yes, that pepper mill is excellent. I
now have two of them.

I'm glad you found one at such a good price that works well for you.

I hope you let Penzey's know their newest model is not an improvement
over the old one.

Do you know how many times you and others have said exactly that,
countless.

I'm contemplating getting another but I already have more than a dozen
different pepper mills... most I never use but I keep them because
they are attractive... my favorite is the one I use for white
peppercorns, I have it for more than forty years, it's made in
Denmark, the best pepper mill I've ever used.

this is the absolute best
https://www.amazon.com/Kuhn-Rikon-Va...der+kuhn+rikon

You can get a better deal on price at QVC, 2/$24.30
I've been using mine for 15? years.
It has a wide adjustment range. Easy to fill, easy to hold, easy to
grind, easy to clean.
They are called 'spice grinders,' because they do more than
peppercorns
I've tried the ones Sheldon recommended and they just didn't adjust
and I paid too much for the darn thing.

Peugeot mechanisms are well made and used properly (always clockwise)
will last a lifetime. I once had to restore the wooden part of an Alessi
mill that had become damaged and I managed to get it back to new,
sellable condition. I had to take it apart first and the mechanism was
of superb quality. I wish I could get some of these "innards" as the
ones I have for turning pepper mills are of nowhere near the same quality.

Looks very nice and easy to handle as well. I've got a metal and love
the taste and aroma of freshly ground pepper. When I need a quantity
of ground pepper I use an electric coffee grinder I bought specifically
for grinding spices.

The nice thing about this Kuhn Rikon is that you tip it upside down to
use it so you never have pepper trails all over your counter and
cupboards.

That's one thing I do hate about my tradition pepper mill. But I found a
small plastic lid from whatever years ago would allow my mill to sit in it
perfectly and catch those grains.

Yours received many poor reviews and only a handful of people bought
it. Mainly what drew me to the OXO was its crank handle, it'll grind
a lot of pepper very quickly and effortlessly. Over 2,000 people
bought it and hardly anyone didn't like it and of those that
complained it was about the most ignorant reason... naturally the fill
door can pop open if it's not held with ones hand over it, says so in
the accompanying literature.
Btw, Penzeys new replacement doesn't have the crank handle like their
old one... pepper mills that require twisting a knob are a PIA, unless
yoose enjoy the sexual simulation.
Also, if the pepper mill you chose is so wonderful why didn't you post
about earlier, why did you take the opportunity to knock the one I
posted about, and then claim you had already bought the same one and
didn't like it... anyone can make up a story after the fact while
boasting about something they don't have, Janet B. Smith.... exactly
like most RFCers, who constantly Tell about all the food they prepare
and everything else in their life but never Show any thing... they are
the Pinochios who failed 1st grade "Show N' Tell".

Unlike you, I have other things to do with my life than read rfc. I
posted when I saw it. Don't tell me I have to go and take a picture
of the pepper mill you recommended to prove to you I have one. You
know I have a lot of photos of things that I have cooked, baked,
grown. I have more imagination than to cook 2 dozen eggs and 20
pounds of potatoes in a fry pan to make dinner for 2 days.

The OXO comes with a lid, but I prefer to keep my pepper mills in a
small baking pan, eventualy collects enough ground pepper to use in a
mundane stew.

You've never answered any question I've ever asked you... you're the
typical RFCer who resides in a tenement basement appartment and is
always months behind in their rent.

I wouldn't even bother thinking about using those accumulated pepper grains.
They'd be so flat in taste they would add nothing even to a mundane stew.

We have a Perfex also. This one is 6.5 inches tall. Got it in Paris. If
I want to do some serious ground pepper I reach for it.

That's extremely interesting, JanetB! Thanks for the link. I'm not in
the market for a peppermill but the upside down idea intrigues me.

Second verse, same as the first.

What's he whining about? He likes the Oxo pepper mill. Great! That
doesn't mean we are all going to run out and buy one.

I'm *not* shopping for a pepper mill. But I appreciate hearing about
both the one he likes and the one you have. I like getting honest
feedback about products from people I know (that would be you RFC'rs).
Beats the hell out of online reviews from strangers.

As for food pics, I've seen yours, you've seen mine. We've both seen
his. I'm just not that interested in taking pictures of food anymore.

Next rant will be about people who don't have photos on the RFC website.

Tsk tsk, m'dear...it wasn't *so* many years ago that you gave us all here a breathless "countdown" of your parents' dying days, $$$$peculating about how much you'd inherit, and then bragged to us incessantly about all that you gained when they passed on.

Just sayin'...
