Around here, a memorial service is a church thing, but without the
coffin that would be there for a funeral. It may or may not include the
burial of ashes. A non religious gathering is usually called a
celebration of life.

I went to an amazing one back in November after my oldest bestest friend
dried suddenly. He had been in a couple of common law relationships and
had one daughter, and a number of stepsons and stepdaughters. They all
had extended families who had bonded well with him. The event was held
at a retreat on Saltspring Island with lots of good food, good wine and
good beer and everyone had great things to say about him.

They leave all the things piled in the front yard from week to week, it
looks like a pig sty actually. This has been going on for several months,
with tarps thrown over the piles when it rains. I mind my own business as
far as saying anything goes, but it looks awful.

Funny, my neighbor from next door who I have spoken to many times from a
distance came over the other day and asked to borrow my phone because he
locked himself out of his house along with his cell phone. I did not
recognize him with the ballcap and was deciding whether to let him in or
not, so he said I'm John from next door. DOH! That's how close I am to my
neighbors, but I did offer him a beer while he waited to be neighborly, he
declined.

I know. It's a nationwide problem.

Worldwide! Here we have our first minister complaining that Westminster
keep us in austerity, yet Scotland can afford free university places and

It could have been worse. When we moved out her about 40 years ago we
were torn between two houses, this one and one around the corner, about
a mile from here. We opted for this one. The other one turned out to
have a neighbour worse than mine. It was almost a corner lot, but it
turned out that a strip of land along the adjacent road belonged to the
neighbour and over the years it accumulated a number of derelict cars,
pickup trucks, trailers and piles of scrap wood. The owner's son was a
low life who lost his license and thought he could get around by driving
a dirt bike across people's front yards.

The lady who owned it died a couple years ago and someone bought the
property, tore down the house and built a nice one. I don't think I
could have stood the 40 years that it took for that to happen.

There's a house down the block from me that was completely overgrown
by vines and shrubberies, this would not have been tolerated by
an HOA. Still, I would not want a group of people whose job it is
to boss me around about the color of my siding or deciding to
spend a bunch of money on something I don't want.

But if the development has common areas to be maintained, be it
condos or not, you're going to have an HOA.

They are not common where I live, outside of senior communities
or condos. That's probably o0ne reason for a gated community,
not just anyone can come in and use the pool or the golf course.
It's private property.

Knock wood I don't need that, anyone can drive down my street willy

They have access to it and people use it, but there are no units with
a door that opens on to it as it would in a back garden for a house.
The garden company looks after the mowing and flower beds, except for
one that I see from my dining room window, I took that over and plant
it how I want to salve my gardening needs.

There was an article here recently saying most funeral homes are
building on rooms for celebration of life ceremonies as people are
being more honest these days, if they were not a member of a
congregation, then they didn't want a church ceremony.

Then perhaps they should quite selling off properties to the University of
Michigan, which pays no taxes.

In 2010 they bought a single piece of art for $850,000. That won't fix
all the roads, but their priorities are misplaced. Everybody in the city
says "Fix the damned roads!"

Actually Cheri, it got worse once I KF'd him. Before then, I had a
modicum of control (such as one can have) and he was not so bad. What
you see is me *stopping that*.

The supposed 'defence' was a single post on something there where he
really was being blamed for something he didnt do. Now, years later it
gets trotted out inaccurately as spome sort of manttra that no matter
what Sheldon says 'I supposedy supported it'.

I used to have a modicum of control on him but once I got tired in the
end of being blamed for all his crap, I KF'd him and he's ramapant.

It's him *without* me trying to keep him in bounds, that many note as a
change and object to. Of course, that is also my fault right?

You have no influence on him. Only the bottle has an influence on him.
The bottle from which he hasn't drunk for the past 10 years.

He definitely is a walking sphincter, and completely incorrigible.

It's not anyone's fault that he simply cannot be reformed. Death will be
the only thing that eventually works.

David, that's close. It's not a church thing here (though in many
places it can be).

Smile, we are not worried about timing here. The official wake will be
sometime in late August it seems.

Who knows what goes on in the minds of some people. A few years back I
was drawn into some drama about a funeral. My wife has a friend whose
mother attended her (Anglican) church. The mother had not been to the
church for some time and had told the minister that she wanted to get
back to her Presbyterian roots. When the mother died the family
contacted the Anglican minister to arrange the funeral. They wanted to
hire their own organist and had a list of songs they wanted her to play.

The friend was upset because the minister insisted that they had to use
the church's organist and could only have pieces from whatever list of
approved music the church had. She thought that was horrible and
thought I should support her in her demands. Sorry. I could not do
that. I gave up the Anglican church decades ago. I was not a member of
the parish. They wanted an Anglican service. I would expect that to
involved sticking to whatever rules that church had. If you don't want
an Anglican service, go somewhere else.

I have to take your word for the university not paying property tax, but
it does attract a lot of people who are paying tax. There are well paid
teaching and administrative staff who would be living there and paying
tax. There are student rental properties paying taxes. There are
businesses catering to the staff and students who are paying taxes.

And this whiny post of yours is about dinner how? Or were you too busy with
the cat thread or busy being an expert on every subject that comes up,
including lawnmowers, air conditioners, stoves, refrigerators, cars, and
water, just to name a few? Unbelievable.

It's also about time for one of his posts raving about women's tits, and
how they all swarm over him trying to get him to have sex with them.

Sorry, man. I can't remember what I had for dinner last Tuesday. Since
it was a work night, it probably was very simple and not worth posting
about.

Yep, there's all of that, including spinoff tech businesses. Yet
Ann Arbor still can't find the money to fix the roads. They can
find money to buy land outside town to create a greenbelt.

==

Ignore it. I don't know if you know about it ;-) but kfs are brilliant <g>

His current state is not something you previously saved us from.

Intellectual deterioration and social disinhibition are typical of age-
related disorders like alzheimers and dementia.

Sheldon is a pitiful old man who's losing it.
