Just to make it clear, I'm not saying that what you say isn't true - just that people don't think about where they choose to live in that way. My guess is that one day the shit is going to hit the fan i.e., the lava flows will destroy the city of Hilo - if a tsunami or hurricane doesn't get to it first. I'm guessing it's going to be sooner than later.

That's always the case. People build on flood plains and then complain
when they get flooded. They choose to buy a house in an airport flypath
and complain about the noise.
In this case, I would have thought that the authorities would have zoned
areas with a higher risk. But then, hindsight is 20:20!

Back in the 1950s my father was working at AVRO and their facility as on
the edge of Malton Airport (now Pearson International). One of his good
friends was a coworker, an English guy. The guy bought a house about 5
km southwest of the airport. One day when we were visiting the guy was
complaining about the sound from the planes flying overhead. Dad asked
him what he expected when he bought a house so close to the airport.

Dad had been an airforce bomber pilot and was well aware that large
planes made a lot of noise. Planes are much quieter now than they used
to be.

The Hawaiians view the volcano as a living being which demands respect from the natives. You're not going to get much complaining if Pele blows her top and sends people fleeing from their houses. There are numerous stories of Pele taking human form and interacting with humans. These tales are pretty creepy but I suppose that's the way it is with all people that are in close contact with nature are at the mercy of their environment.

When my ex and I spent a few days on the big island, taking a piece of
lava as a souvenir was supposed to bring bad luck. Two years later, we
divorced so some would think the Pele curse worked. However, looking
back, I now consider it to have been good luck! :-)

There are many tales of people taking rocks from Kilauea and having to send the rocks back after a incurring a string of bad luck. Yours is the first I've heard where you've gotten good luck and won't send it back. That's bad for tourism!

Those things used to be pretty popular around 20 years ago. I've had a couple of them. After a while you get sick of them and throw them away. Then after that, they seem like a pretty good idea, so you buy another one. But then you get sick of that one too.

What your husband proposes might be a very good idea - especially if you happen to have one of those grills at the time. Good show!

That's funny. At first, my divorce was a most horrendous tragedy
in my life. I never saw it coming but in the end...after a year
of sadness, I realized that it was the best thing that could have
ever happened to me. A sad ending to a marriage but a good thing
for both of us and I got the daughter with no argument.

My next phase of life as a single parent absolutely ruled!

Funny how things turn out like that.

Apparently your governor is a haole. He's asking for federal taxpayer
assistance and seems irreverent to the traditional Hawaiian viewpoint.

Especially, if one is traveling the country - by hopping on freight cars or enjoying all this country has to offer - by living off the land in hobo camps and such. Unfortunately, I can't build a fire outside of my condo and that metal won't work on my induction range.

Hawaii needs cash to help with the floods on Kauai and the lava flows on the big island. We'll do our part and throw a virgin into the volcano to appease Pele. That's the least we can do. OTOH this looks like it might be a two virgin job.

That's not a problem, virgins are kept in reserve just for this purpose in a special hut in a secret location on the big island. The girl has to be clothed in a special heat resistant suit made of banana leaves and thick coconut fiber flip-flops for the trek up the mountain. About 20% of the virgins will burst into flames before reaching the jumping off point. Then we have to send up another virgin. Having "the girl in front of you burst into flames" is an old Hawaiian saying meaning you are having a run of bad luck.

It's some fairly nasty business but it's the only thing that has been proven to be 100% effective. As usual, Hollywood gets it wrong.

You'd think that sitting in front of a hardware store like that all day that you'd get to see some funny and weird things going on but this was not the case. Too bad! I did, however, see one of these things. The plates on the wings probably means that you can catch a ride on the bonnet. God bless you brits!

sweet...

YOU were selling flowers???

You'd think that sitting in front of a hardware store like that all day that
you'd get to see some funny and weird things going on but this was not the
case. Too bad! I did, however, see one of these things. The plates on the
wings probably means that you can catch a ride on the bonnet. God bless you
brits!

Those things are rarer than hen's teeth on this rock. I like the plates on the wings. I'm guessing that you use them to stand on to get a better vantage point when hunting for a Walmart on the Ewa plains. I'll have to rely on your word about the color. I haven't seen very many old Land Rovers. The color used to be quite popular on old Porsches (Guards Red) and Fender guitars (Fiesta Red.)

Red Porsches and guitars will fit in with an urban landscape. Dark green makes a lot of sense on the African plains or the Scottish moors. My first Fiat was a dark green. It was simply beautiful.

I think it's a wonderful color on certain cars. My Passat is dark green but it's a metallic color. The solid color dark green is a very old school color and not real popular at the moment. Perhaps one day it will be fashionable again.

Great Caesar's ghost! What fun cars you have had. A dark maroon Spitfire? That's unusual. Bless your little heart.

No bother. I love hearing about those British cars of the 60's. I wasn't so keen about owning one of those while living on the opposite side of the world from the British Isles though. If I was living there, I'd be having a ball.

The Pajero was named Montero in the US. Oddly enough, they stopped selling those here in 2006. That's too bad, I've thought of Mitsubishi as a technology driven company in the way that Audi is. Anyway, the Montero is a sort of a cult car in the US.
