Default Low fiber diet WAS: Colonoscopy

Well, I saw the postings about colonoscopies and opened them in the
hope they were discussing low fiber diets.

Reason I'm asking is I have a procedure in a few weeks that calls for
a four day low fiber diet then a cleanout before the virtual
colonoscopy.

Anyone have a four day low fiber menue? - Mike

That was good, but I think that the poster was asking a real question.

Sandwiches with meat and or cheese on white bread are almost zero fiber.
Eggs and bacon for breakfast have no fiber. Beer, milk and coffee (my
three favorite beverages) are zero fiber. Plain, vanilla or lemon yogurt
are fiber-free. You could bake a nice piece of salmon, and if you hand
squeeze lemon onto it, the pulp stays with the lemon.

I have no idea about your body fat issues, but if you are wanting to get
rid of excess body fat, you could use this as a chance to kill two birds...
by trying out high-fat/low-carb. I mean, you're going to be dissatisfied
anyway. Small doses of senna laxative, and small amounts of MCT oil will
prevent constipation in the absence of fiber. Feel free to email me if you
wish. I *know my shit* about digestive stuff, and I prioritize email.

Sure he does, what with Google and an obsessive interest, but no
formal degrees or medical/nutrtitional training.

Your medical training has disappointed you because your job doesn't include fiddling with the perianal areas of underage girls.

I did not have to do that prior to my colonoscopy. My friend did and there
wasn't much she could eat. I think it was mostly stuff like crackers, white
bread, white rice, broth.

Kaiser doesn't make you suffer "much". Drinking that stuff is awful,
it's really nasty - made me feel like I wanted to throw up.

Apparently the kind of prep you need depends on the reason for the
colonoscopy. Mine was routine. My friend's was for medical reasons.

That's not true. It depends solely on doctor/clinic preference. Some
pre-existing medical conditions may warrant using one prep over
another(kidney or heart issues, etc.), but the reason for the colonoscopy
is irrelevant to the type of prep the doctor orders for you.

Well, seeing as how my friend and I both go to the same medical clinic, I
kinda don't think that is true. I know I had specifics to me because I am
diabetic.

Some people with slowed digestions need more time for the prep. I was
worried as I do have a slowed digestion. I have heard of people who went
through it all only to be turned down because they weren't cleaned out
enough.

Same here; normally the treatment starts the night before, but for
some reason, maybe because this is a "virtual" colonoscopy, they want
me to start off four days ahead. I have a general list of what I
can/cannot eat and it's pretty reasonable (not limited to crackers,
etc) but would like to see if someone has a better imagination than I
do - MIke

Trust me, if you are not clean enough they will make you do it over.
Last summer, when I was in the hospital and very sick with C.
Difficile ( a horrible gut infection) and other infections, they prepped
me for a colonoscopy. The doctor decided I was not cleaned out well
enough so I had to do the whole thing over two days later. That cruel
and unusual punishment is not something I ever want to repeat.

Just eat a lot of meat like chicken and hamburger.

If it is allowed. When my friend was on it, she wasn't allowed much in the
way of protein.

Makes no sense. When I had 18 inches of my sigmoid colon removed I was told
to eat only meat for 5 days. Go figure.

Meat can be hard to digest. So can dairy.

Meat is what they called "soft foods" when I was given my exit advice. It's
easier to digest than any grain.

I was told to avoid beef for a few days before as it leaves a blood
looking residue.

- Mike

~~~~~~~~~
It has been several years since I had a colonoscopy. I did not have a four
day low fiber diet at that time. However, I was told not to eat anything
red (and especially no red meat) during that time. The day before the
actual procedure was the only "bad" day when I had to drink what seemed like
gallons of a truly distasteful liquid (the "cleanout" day). I don't know
what you mean by a "virtual" colonoscopy, though. Did you mean the "actual"
colonoscopy?
It's a non-invasive CAT scan view.
Sorry to bring up cats again.
I think the red you were told not to eat was in the form of a red dye,
such as jello. Either that or instructions have changed since you had
yours done.
I was told no red or blue dye as it would appear to be blood. But that was
just the day before.
Yes. Obviously some people's doctors are stuck in the past.
Yes, those silly people at Harvard Medical School should get some
lessons from you.
http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/up...onoscopy.shtml
On the day before your colonoscopy — when you’re restricted to clear
liquids — you can have popsicles, Jell-O, clear broth, coffee or tea
(without milk or creamer), soft drinks, Italian ice, or Gatorade. But
take nothing with red, blue, or purple dye
The WEBMD guys don't know either.
http://www.webmd.com/colorectal-canc...y-16695?page=2
One to two days before a colonoscopy, you will stop eating solid foods
and drink only clear fluids, such as water, tea, coffee, clear juices,
clear broths, flavored ice pops, and gelatin (such as Jell-O). Do not
drink anything red or purple, such as grape juice or fruit punch. And do
not eat red or purple foods, such as grape ice pops or cherry gelatin.
That's what I was told to avoid the day before the procedure. In addition,
I was told not to have any red meat for about 3 or 4 days before the
colonoscopy.
The no red meat for four days part is odd.
It was part of my instructions within the last 2 years. I don't think
'red' in the description red meat has anything to do with the red dye
thing. Check here for reasons behind diet
I could see it from the standpoint that red meat is hard to digest. My
friend wasn't allowed any meat or dairy for 4 days. Or anything with much
fiber in it. But she was having some unexplained bleeding so hers wasn't
just a routine procedure. She was pretty much stuck with applesauce, dry
toast, rice, crackers... She called me on the 3rd day, frantic, asking me
to look on the Internet to see if there was anything else she could eat
because she was starving.
