Default Rabbit

Well, I finally found some place to get rabbit to fix for dinner. I
found it at the Farmer's Market. There is a problem, however. A
rabbit (one rabbit) is $28. Guess I won't be having rabbit in my
lifetime again. When I lived back in the mid-west, everyone hunted
rabbit. It was sort of free (disregarding guns, ammo, clothing,
vehicle). No one hunts rabbit here. My husband shot one shortly
after we moved here; it was absolutely covered in fleas. That was the
end of that endeavor.

Wow, that is expensive. They are expensive in the shops here as well,
but around AUD$15, from memory.

When I was a kid growing up on Long Island, there was a rabbit form that
raised rabbits for the fur. They had a small store where they sold the
meat... only open on Saturday. It must have been very cheap because we
ate rabbit often... roasted or as hasenpfeffer.

As a grown up... I hunted rabbit often when I lived in Wisconsin, but
only in the late Fall after the first few snow falls and cold snaps.
That killed off the fleas and ticks, etc.

Good tip. The weather here doesn't cool off like it did in Wisconsin.
The weather sort of saunters into Christmas -- maybe. Meanwhile,
hunters are off hunting deer, elk, duck, and so forth.

Yikes!

I can't imagine the reason. Seems the last time I bought rabbit, it
was under $10 for one frozen rabbit. I recall my grandfather driving
to a place that butchered fresh rabbs for consumption. That back in
the 50s in LA. Last time I ate rabbit, I made the Hassenpheffer
recipe from the Time/Life Germany cookbook. Quite good.

I did a little checking on the 'Net and it seems that there may be a
resurgence for rabbit meat due to those interested in a more healthy
diet. Rabbit meat is more nutritious, less fat, less calories than
our (US) other sources of animal protein. Popular through the 60s,
the public lost interest when the love affair with beef began. The
cute little bunny rabbit thing will have to be overcome in the US
before we can expect to see it in every store again..
I'm going to check with Whole Foods and give them some encouragement
to carry rabbit.

backyard chickens are making a comeback, perhaps we should start raising
rabbits too. We did when we were kids.

I've never seen fresh rabbit, but then I was living in the suburbs.
Frozen was the closest I could get. I liked it well enough. I browned
it, deglazed the pan with a little light red wine, herbs, chopped
vegetables and maybe some chicken stock. This would have been around
1995 so I don't really remember exactly what I did. The rabbit was
tender, lean and tasty. I really haven't seen it since. I do know the
last time I looked for it I couldn't find it anymore.

Truly sad, since I usta see frozen rabbit in most sprmkts, yr round.
Same with duck and pheasant. Now, I see none of them except during
the xmas holidays, if then. I was shocked to see lamb stks in
Safeway, a couple weeks ago. Gone, now.

Yeah, I'm sure they'd appreciate that on the golf course behind my
house. LOL

My paternal grandmother had a chicken coop. Chicken was Sunday dinner.
Fresh eggs, too. But not everyone lives in a rural area. Not
everyone can have a garden or chickens, much less rabbits.

I've not seen rabbit for decades. I found some about a decade ago but I
would have had to buy it live and butcher it myself. No thanks.

There used to be frozen rabbit in the market, from Australia I think.
Can't recall brand. I've not seen it for too many years.

I love rabbit in hassenfeffer!

We never buy rabbit. We shoot them for ourseves.

Boy, ain't that the truth! We never see pheasant anymore. Duck shows
up at most stores for the holidays (goose too) I was so surprised to
see that Fred Meyer is carrying various cuts of lamb, veal and beef.
It used to be leg of lamb and lamb chops, no veal, and the major
well-known cuts of beef. I saw big, meaty oxtails, lamb shoulder
chops and neck pieces, veal chops. Actual packages of sliced liver
that weren't packaged in a factory! I think they were trying to stave
off an exodus to Whole Foods and TJ's

You're going to hate me, but I just bought 2 frozen rabbits for $1.49/#.
Now I need to figure out what to do with them because my wife and son will
probably be like, "No way."

Backyard chickens is the latest suburban fad. We raised a lot of rabbits in
our suburban back yard - the flowers grew nice, too!

Never ate a tame rabbit..but love cotton tails..and heard tame rabbits taste even better. Even ate Jackrabbit a time or two. About 30 mins in the pressure cooker and it comes out like roast beef. Fleas and ticks do subside in cold weather. Also bumped into a cotton tail one time which had a parasite called a "Wolf" under the skin. Looked just like a miniature candy rootbeer barrel with a sucking mouth on it. The rabbit still tasted ok.

My wife came home for dinner (fried chicken and garden salad), and said
she will give the rabbit a chance. At her suggestion, I'm going to make
a variation on Joanne Harris' "Rabbit with Red Rice" from *My French Kitchen*.

thank you. That is very close to what my mother did. I didn't know
it was a recipe. I just thought it was something she had learned from

o.k., you're way past my ewww point with the 'wolf.' You're right,
the pressure cooker does a good job on the toughies.
I never ate a 'tame' rabbit until I got married and moved away from
home and into an apartment. After that we moved around a bit and the
further we got West the less I saw of supermarket rabbit.
