Default Sale Price for Corned Beef

Corned beef brisket is on sale at Publix tomorrow for (get ready)
$3.89/lb. You folks in other places who can get it for under $2/lb
really should stock up if you like corned beef. As much as I love it,
this isn't much of an incentive. (sigh)

I bought a point cut. There's hardly any fat on it, so I have no idea
what people are complaining about.

I'm not sure anyone is "complaining", per se. I never see point cut for
sale at Publix, only the flat. I'm considering emailing them to ask why
everyone else in the country seems to be able to buy corned beef for
much less.

Point cut is $1.69/lb on sale here (Boston area) and flat is usually
$2.99/lb on sale.

Is it that way at all Publix? Do you have a way other than writing to
corporate headquarters to request particular items at that store?
Maybe that particular store has a "captive audience" so they're
getting away with highway robbery due to no real competition.

Winco has it for $1.79 this week. I had already bought one at Costco
for $3.38 per pound. After seeing the ones at Winco, I'm glad I have
the Costco one. The Costco corned beef has a thick piece of meat and
a decent fat cap. The Winco is a fairly thin piece of meat with a
thick fat cap. Maybe it all balances out in the end, but the Costco
product is a much prettier piece of meat. The brand is Shenson and is
a flat cut. You don't want to read the side panel and find out the
sodium percentage -- but it's really just once a year for us.

I couldn't speak to other Publix stores. This is the only one near me.
I did email them right after I posted this, BTW. I said I'm curious
as to why much of the country seems to be able to buy it for so much
less. I haven't heard back. I got an auto-reply saying someone would
be in touch within 24-48 hours. Since it's now Friday I'm not holding
my breath waiting for an answer before St. Patrick's Day.

Their "competition" is Food Lion. It's probably a decent enough store
but it really needs a makeover. It just feels dingy. The floor tiles
look like they belong in a kitchen from the 1960s. And the lighting in
the store makes it seem very dim. I see in their online sales flyer,
they have corned beef for $2.99/lb. It doesn't specify point or flat
cut. Oh, and you have to have their "MVP card" to get that price. I
*hate* those cards. Just give me the damn sale price!

Publix does have "petite" red potatoes, 3-lb. bag for $2.49. I honestly
don't know whether or not that's a good price. I rarely buy bags of
potatoes; don't need that many. I buy them loose from the farm stand.

Corned beef is never on sale the way people talk about here where I
live, either. Wow, that is one bad sentence. Anyway, if I saw
corned beef at under 2 bucks a pound, I'd be all over that, too.
It's closer to $4 on sale. I always check after St. Patrick's Day,
but they might go for 50 cents a pound less than before. Maybe.

Yep, that's been my experience with the pricing. Everyone talks about
these great sale prices but I never see them. I guess we live in the
wrong places.

I even called WalMart <gasp> to inquire. (Not that driving 30 miles
would amount to much of a savings.) I asked to speak with someone in
the Grocery/meat department. They put me on "ignore" for 5 minutes. I
called back. The same person answered and this time asked what I want
to talk to them about! Corned Beef. "What?" Corned Beef. "Do you
want to know the price?" Yes, I'd like to know the price per pound.
She put me on hold again. Meanwhile, I transferred a load of laundry
from the washer to the dryer and started another load. I've been on
hold this time for going on 10 minutes. The first load of laundry will
be done by the time they can find someone to answer the friggin
question. I'm being stubborn, just waiting to see how long they ignore
me. (Just another reason not to shop at WalMart.)

That's not *shopping* at Wal-Mart, that's phoning Wal-Mart, and the hold is
pretty much universal when calling stores. If it was something like a
prescription, I would hold, otherwise....no way would I stay on hold that
long. Get on Yelp and complain. :-)

Costco seems to carry pretty decent corned beef- that is where I
always get mine.

True, it's not "shopping" but I'm a potential customer. And I have been
in this store in the past. Not great but give me a reason to go there.

This phone experience has not been the norm when I've called other
retail stores. Many stores have a phone system where you can push a
button to be connected to whatever department. Or at least find
customer service to help out.

I finally got to talk to a manager and you know what he told me? There
isn't an "office" in the store. The phone they use is by the fitting
room in the clothing department. That's where incoming calls go. They
can't transfer calls to different departments. They use a paging system
and hope someone in a department hears it and picks up. He also told me
there aren't speakers in the area where they take their breaks so if a
manager is paged they don't hear it. It all sounds (heh) pretty
ridiculous to me. But believable, because we *are* talking about WalMart.

If it was something like a
> prescription, I would hold, otherwise....no way would I stay on hold

I *finally* reached someone who gave a damn and she apologized
profusely. She got someone in the meat department to pick up and answer
my question within 2 minutes. Apparently it isn't so difficult after all.

Point cut: $2.88/lb.
Flat cut: $3.88/lb.

Yeah, Jay, I bought mine at Publix for $4.49/lb in February. But since
so many people every year here mention all their great sale prices I
thought I'd check around. Publix sale price is $3.89. Not the great
savings people in other parts of the U.S. talk about every year.

I've never bought food at WalMart. Apparent a number of people here do,
on occasion.

Personally, maybe because I'm in CA and more people calling, I usually have
a long wait when calling stores, so I usually don't call. I just go there,
but as you say you're 30 miles away so that would definitely make a
difference.

That's a decent price for small ones. I would pay it.
You can wait for better prices on normal sized ones.

Yep, I'm not driving 30 miles to find out (a) do they have any? and (b)
what does it cost? As it turned out the flat cut is only 10 cents less
at WalMart than at my regular grocery store.
