What are your reviews of Saveur? $27 for 3 years seems good. I'm in
the mood for a cooking mag. Is it worth getting?

Saveur is most excellent, IMNSHO. I subscribe to many magazines, and
it's one of the few that I keep whole without cutting out particular
recipes. I wish I could get 3 years of Saveur for $27! Where'd you
find that deal?

They sent me a personalized mailing complete with a free cloth
supermarket shopping bag and a chance to win a KA mixer. That's why I
was wondering whether it was all show and no go.

I've been subscribing to it for years. If I could get only one
magazine, I only subscribe to 3 anyway, but if I could get only one,
that would be the one.

A dinner guest got me a subscription. I enjoy it very much, but I
wouldn't buy one for myself. We just can't eat that way in this house.

I've been a suscriber since the 90's. It's one of the best cooking
magazines out there. I love the authenticity of their articles and
recipes and I always get great ideas. Plus it's a great reaad all by
itself.

I get so many really good looking email recipes from Saveur that I
think it will be totally worth it. Where did you find that deal? I
didn't see it on the internet, but I found this one

It came in my mail addressed to me. Your deal is essentially the
same, just a different gift.

I used to read Saveur. It's a good cooking periodical. If I were to
subscribe to a cooking mag, now, I'd choose Fine Cooking.

My take on it (very limited) is that it is less a recipe magazine and
more about the culture surrounding the food. <shrug> Nine bucks a year
seems reasonable enough.

Actually, with all due respect, I agree with Barb. It's not that Saveur
doesn't have some very fine recipes, but the recipes are linked to an
article on the culture and food history of the region being discussed.
Cooking, as in technique, etc., isn't the main focus. But that's OK.
That (the culture/history discussion) is the reason I maintain my
subscription.

Of course, I'm also one of those guys who in my younger days bought
Playboy regularly, but solemnly assured everyone I only did it for the
articles...

I'm another long time Saveur reader who would agree with Barb and
Alan. Saveur is more than a one dimensional cooking magizine. OTOH,
that's why I'd subscribe to Fine Cooking. I want a strictly technique
howto magazine. If I want culture, I'll read the free NatGeos in the
laundry room.

The magazines my mom got at the grocery store were filled with
recipes. "Feed family of four on $20 a day!" that sort of thing. Real
cooks don't need no steenkeen' recipes.

Playboy only rarely ran any erotic material. Only if you were a hair-
trigger adolescent would gazing at the respectful nude pictures in
Playboy get you off. That was a niche that Penthouse was eager to
fill, so to speak, with their pictorials and letters from the editors.

Oh, gosh, Koko -- no "all due respect" necessary at all. I think it is
a wonderful magazine -- my comment was meant to convey that I don't
think it's so much about "cooking recipes" as it is about the people,
the culture, the community of folks who surround those recipes. I love
the pictures -- all of it. I think of it more as a "food" magazine than
as a "cooking" magazine. :-)

There you go -- you said it better than I did -- the culture/history
discussion part is what I enjoy most. Most people here know I'm a
pretty boring cook have difficulty following a recipe besides. :-\ So
I look at Saveur as being about food more than being about cooking the
food (recipes).

Exactly, Barb. Saveur takes you on a journey to far away places,
cultures and flavors. They show you how real people in those places
make and enjoy the foods they love. I think of it as a cooking
magazine that takes you on a journey with each issue. With the
descriptions, methodology and recipes along side the 'travelog', I've
ventured out into areas of food I would not have tried before.

Sounds like the old Gourmet magazine. I want recipes (which only
novice cooks follow verbatim), not travelogues and other extraneous
wordiness, so I'll stick with Saveur by email which is just recipes.
Works for me.

Then we are in agreement, it is a "food" magazine chock full of
recipes.
