Default Anyone try making their own Butter Puff Pastry?

Is it worth the effort or should I just keep buying the frozen stuff.

anyone with any recipes or tips/tricks to share, should I even attempt
to make my own?

If you make your own, it has butter. Isn't that worth the effort?

The flavor of homemade is definitely better but until you become more
proficient at laminating the dough you're more likely to get a better
rise with store bought. Once you learn how to work with the dough
though you'll never go back to store bought. Puff pastry is time
consuming because the dough has to rest several times. The actual
work involved is minimal.

Frozen stuff I buy is made with unsalted butter but it's pricey. It is
a time saver though....

Most of the TC cooking show chefs suggest using store bought. I have
used it a number of times and it always turned out nicely.

Last time I looked, TJ's seemed to have stopped carrying it again.
Too bad! I was counting on their having it forever. It is MUCH
cheaper than the puff pastry at Whole Foods.

I have made it, and the memory is pretty offputting.

the one I made came out much better than the ones I have bought. It really
isn't that hard. It does take a while, since you need to let it cool in the
fridge a couple times, but if you don't sit there and watch it but find
something else to do, it doesn't take that long.

The commercial ones I have used had less rise than mine.

Not worth the effort, IMO. Yes, I did make it as a child. Why? I guess I
liked to do things the hard way. The end result was no better.

I've used the frozen stuff with never a single failure or issue. I've
never tried to make it but everything I've read says it isn't worth trying.

I used to make my own but the frozen stuff is so good (uk) I never make it
myself any more. I do make Rough Puff pastry though. That is quick and
easy and puffs up nicely enough for me

Just plug 'Rough Puff Pastry' into google and you will find loads)

I tend to leave my butter in bigger pieces than most suggest because I like
the bigger flakes but they are all good.

Just make sure everything is very cold!

When Martha Stewart, the queen of show-offs and making things harder
than they need to be, recommended buying frozen, rather than trying to
make it, I decided I'd never try to make my own.

I once watched Nathalie Dupree's show on making it - scared the heck
outta me. My cooking will never rise to that level of proficiency,
that's fer darn sure.

Where's Sheldon's input? I predict it will be "No one makes puff
Pastry the right way any more, and I never buy that machine made
junk." Blah, blah blah...

And no, never made it by hand.

I haven't made real puff pastry in years, but mine rose amazingly high -
much higher than any store bought stuff I've tried. These days I
generally make 'rough puff' pastry - it doesn't rise as high as the real
deal, but tastes better and rises as well as the commercial stuff.

Hey Cheryl, I posted a response but it isn't showing so apols if it has and
here I go again

Just search for Rough Puff Pastry in google. There are loads out there

I would just say keep everything very cold and I usually keep my lumps of
butter a big bigger than they say because I like bigger flakes.

Yes, do it. My tip- keep it cold while you are making it.

BS!! Of course it's better home made. Do you even like it to begin
with?

Yeah, fresh made with real butter is horrible- plus the torture of the
smell when it's baking!

Yes, it's fine, as long as you get the product that contains butter.
