Cream cheese was winning when I voted but I would have said smoked
salmon and cream cheese with a little dill if I had been given the
choice. Lox is not really smoked salmon and I don't particularly like
it.

I'm a cream cheese fan, butter is next, but I'm not crazy about lox. I was
surprised that butter was only 9%, but I guess that will change with a
larger sample.

Truth is, I was torn between cream cheese and butter, but usually
have have cream cheese so that's what I voted.

nancy,

There's two sides to every bagel! Or more depending on how you slice it!

True enough. When there were bagels at work, I'd put butter
on one half and cream cheese on the other.

And when I was a teenager and walked miles all the time, I'd
stop at this one place that had bagels to die for, and I would
get a whole bagel with cream cheese, and another with butter,
because I couldn't choose.

No reason you can't have both. I do! Toast the bagel, butter
it and then shmear it with cream cheese.

Cream Cheese and lox belong together, the rest go with them on a fancy
day. Capers on an extra fancy day.

For me, capers "make" chicken piccata... but they only compliment lox.
Most of the time I don't need that sort of icing on the cake. Plain
old lox and cream cheese on an everything bagel is totally satisfying.

I don't particularly like lox as I have mentioned but, in addition to
dill, I think capers go well with smoked salmon. Eaten on a bagel, I
suppose you'd have to put the capers on the cream cheese rather than the
salmon if you did not want them to roll off.

This reminds me of the bagel sandwich. We used to have a bagel
place around here that served bagel sandwiches. They were great.

They sure do. When I have bagels on hand, invariably some of them end up
being sandwich frames.

I prefer butter and lox but since it wasn't a choice I chose a schmear
and lox. But given my true druthers I would choose butter with matjes
herring... and next would be smoked whitefish (not whitefish salad,
pure smoked whitefish), then lox. Of course it's gotta be a real NYC
bagel, and fresh from the oven, anything else ain't any kind of
bagel. And there are very few places where one can find real lox, if
it's pre-sliced neon orange slime out of a plastic packet it ain't
lox. Real lox is hand sliced to order off the skin. And what they
call "nova" ain't real lox, that's lox for sissys.

Okay, now yoose given me an appetite for "appy", and I'm ready, I got
plenty vodka.

I have to go with MCINL. I *love* lox & bagels, but lox isn't an
everyday item for me. When I get a bagel before work, I don't even
let them cut it. I eat it whole and plain. On the weekends, I often
eat my bagel with cream cheese and jam.

I'm surprised at the number that said "cream cheese." Figured there'd
be a lot of MCINL who had their own particular likes.

I go for cream cheese most of the time, but what I really like is
shaved hot corned beef or pastrami, with melted provolone. Of course
that's not really a topping, now it's a sandwich. :-)

Best -- Terry

Why did you exclude cream cheese and jam from the survey?

I never worry about diets. The only carrots that
interest me are the number of carats in a diamond.

The sqwartz toad schmuck, who's never hopped more than five miles from
his basement appartment hovel, doesn't know that in the sophisticated
parts of the US they have non dairy cream cheese. LOL

Non-Dairy cheese. Uh-huh. Nice try, for somebody with the culinary
experience of a toad.

There are way too many variables.

You forgot;

What kind of bagel
Toasted or not
Butter
onion
Tomato
Swiss cheese
other smoked fish
Other cured meats.

I like cream cheese and Smucker's blueberry preserves, and of course,
the bagel HAS to be toasted. Second choice, peanut butter and cream
cheese, third- just butter will do.

I had no problem understanding the reply was to the thread's subject
line question.

Apparently you haven't dropped in after days of not being online and not
following a thread and tried to figure out what or whom someone is replying
to. You're just being contrary because you don't like me. Quoting is
proper netiquette.

Jill
