Default Chefs off the hook!

I finally watched an episode of Top Chef. WTF!?

Contest is "tailgating". Poached pears w/ creme fraiche?? He's lucky
someone didn't put a bbq sauce covered bullet through his head. And what's
with the potato/parsnip puree fetish? Seems to have replaced the raspberry
coulis craze of the 90s.

I swear, I watch this program and the pretentiousness is enough to gag a
maggot. They throw out French terms I never even heard from Escoffier.
Where's my French->English dictionary? I guess it's basic in-house-conflict
reality tv at its worst.

Cause everything makes more sense then?

It's like coming into a conversation in the middle..and not knowing
what has been said, etc... And expect to make sense of it...

Poached pears w/ creme fraiche for a football tailgate party will make more
sense if I watch it from the beginning? In what parallel universe?

Yes, and the judges probably agreed with you. Did that contestant get
eliminated?

I am talking about the whole series..not just one show. Watch the
series (season) from the beginning.

Maybe it was tailgating for one of those horse events, like
steeplechase. People break out the Bentleys and the good
silver for those events.

Okay, I know, it wasn't.

It's been countdown to a new season of Top Chef in this household! So
excited! We've even been watching repeat episodes of previous seasons to
whet our appetite.

I promise not to post any spoilers till you get a chance to watch.

Last season was very good. And the winner was the best, really!!! I
am so glad she won. Her food was spot on, most of the time, and she
was a really nice person.

The person that was my next favorite...sort of muffed it up on the
last dinner. And he knew it. And he was so very nice too...

Yep. Those were favorite my two as well. I'd have been happy either way,
but it was nice that a woman chef finally one.

Let's try this again:

Yes. Those were my favorite two as well. I'd have been happy either way,
but it was nice that a woman chef finally won.

Bob would have called out "Hunnnn-eeee ..." if I didn't notice the
mistakes myself! ;-)

We accept reality TV as an entertainment. Problem is they are
running out of reality situations. Just waiting for the "how
much yeast infection" can you grow before the end of sweeps week.

No, Bears football.

What did you want them to cook? Hamburgers?

All the Top Chef challenges were cases of pushing the envelope a bit,
being creative, but not going to far off the mark.

I don't remember specifically who made the pears, or what the judges'
reactions were. Some of the people made inappropriate dishes and got
blasted at evaluation.

I watched the new episode tonight. Pretty stoopid. (stupid). It seems
almost scripted. You can pick the ones who will be the finalists already.

In a universe where everybody is not all American and a yard wide? Where
barbecue is not what come to mind for a picnic? Or just try the 1960s!

I grew up in Maine. I never even tasted barbecue until I went to university
in the south. My mother would have made lobster sandwiches and hot oyster
stew for a tailgate, should she ever have considered such a frivolous thing.

New Season: Last night's vocab gem - some French word that means,
apparently, not "dice," but "tiny dice." Brunoise. It was Colichio's
(sp?) challenge during the first Hot Fire. Huh.

I like to watch them go down in flames. Jean-Georges was the guest
executioner...er, judge.

Apperently, it's not just a cutting term:

"The diced vegetables are blanched briefly in salty boiling water and then
submerged in ice water for a few seconds to set the color. The brunoise is
often used as a garnish in many dishes. A common dish which often uses a
brunoise as a garnish is a consommé. A brunoise must be very consistent in
size and shape, as it helps to ultimately create a visual effect."

If I recall, the judge's reaction was WTF do you think you're playing
at serving something like that for Tailgating?! They didn't think it
was any more appropriate for the occasion than the OP did.

Sure some of the contestants screw up... but that's part of the fun of
watching it. The judges usually come down hard on them if what they're
doing just doesn't work.
