For supper tonight I had 4 Jumbo fried eggs (deep fried in bacon grease), a
half a pound of bacon and one bolita of chorizo with 2 pieces of low carb bread toasted with *gobs* of butter on them. I eat this way every day and lose weight. The good Dr. Atkins wasn't making this shit up. Let the arguments pour in. My blood pressure is normal, my cholesterol is normal and I feel ****ing great. Doctors don't condone it. When you're diagnosed with diabetes, they put you on a low fat, high carb diet. They're about 180 degrees off of what would actually cure the disease. Here's an idea...Instead of arguing with me and/or flaming me, read the book. Read it with an open mind. Doctors are the worst ones in the world to trust your health to. After all, they want you to keep coming back to them rather than actually fixing yourself. (basic economics) -- TFM® Zephyrhills (I'll have 4 fried chickens and a diet Coke) Florida |

It's time for me to go back on a salad kick! I can avoid bread ok, but I just love rice, and yams, and some of those other "healthy" veggies that are not low carb. Fortunately, I've been low carbing long enough that I've lost my taste for sugar. My triglycerides have been below 100 mg/dl now for the past few years. With type I, the body doesn't produce insulin. Type II diabetics do produce insulin, but it is not able to efficiently remove sugars from the bloodstream, because your cells do not react properly to the insulin. Type I is an autoimmune disease and only accounts for less than 10% of cases of diabetes in America. Alot of people get confused because of the misnomer "Non-insulin dependent" diabetes used in reference to type II. Many type II diabetics require insulin to keep their sugars in control. Please don't take this the wrong way, I am not meaning to be argumentative. Just a little information I've gained that I thought you'd maybe be interested in. kimberly |

Yes, portion control probably has more to do with losing and maintaining one's weight than anything else. I know in my case that I always ate a fairly balanced diet, but just way too much of everything. I know it's a moot point, but with Alan's activity level in the work he does, it should be relatively easy to maintain a proper weight by eating normal portions of a balanced diet. -- Wayne Boatwright __________________________________________________ 'Have you met my pet?' - Dot |

There's a book called "Eat Fat, Lose Fat", which might be worth reading
for some additional perspectives on the Adkins diet and the South Beach variation of it. The two authors, Fallon and Enig, also have a cookbook out, called "Nourishing Traditions", which in addition to having many good recipes, offers a lot of general nutritional wisdom. Diabetics are told (most often, though I'm sure there are exceptions as there are with every rule) to avoid SIMPLE carbs. Complex carbs are another story altogether. kimberly |

I just have to deal with it. I don't understand. As Kimberly posted, many Type II diabetics use insulin. My uncle takes three doses a day. He exercises, is lean and watches his diet. People generally don't go from Type II to Type I. I expect I'll be on insulin at some point, most of the people on both sides of my family are diabetic. -- Dan Abel Petaluma, California, USA |

Yes, but I'm an absolute glutton and Atkins lets me be one and not blow up like a blimp. I eat my vitamins as directed in the book and drink a *lot* of water. Beer is mostly water BTW, and it *does* count as water intake even though alcohol itself is a diuretic. As has been noted before, not everyone is the same. It works for me and I'll continue to sing its praises. -- TFM® Zephyrhills (78.6 f) Florida |

I don't eat that much meat as it is and there were very few meat alternatives like tofu, beans or seitan. You also had to limit the fruits and vegetables which I didn't like. All in all, it got to the point where I was dreading each meal. I wasn't looking forward to eating, it was becoming a contest to see how quickly I could eat so I could get full before I started to feel queasy. There was just too much grease and fat for my taste and not enough fruits and vegetables. I know people who have done very well on this diet, I just can't. I think you're off on the diabetes thing, though. Both my mom and sister are borderline type 2 diabetes and they are both on a low fat AND low carb diet (though my mom doesn't follow hers, my sister does). -- ..:Heather:. www.velvet-c.com I thought I was driving by Gettysburg once but it ends up I was just driving by your mom's house. |
