I was watching television last night when an ad for the Mid-South Fair came
on. (It's being held in Memphis from Sept. 21-Oct. 1). I didn't pay
attention to the specific date but OOOOH! Paula Deen will be giving cooking
demonstrations at the Mid-South Coliseum in the Fairgrounds! I immedately
thought of your post. Then I thought of the $15 just to get into the fair,
which I have no interest in, and the extra $10 or so per ticket to watch her
cook a bunch of stuff I can probably already prepare for myself. By your
accounts, if her Savannah restaurant is any indication, I can prepare it
better, too!

I agree. I think her restaurant is getting a lot of business solely on
the "celebrity" factor, not the food itself.
I am happy to have read that Natalie Dupree will be in my town in
November to do a free book signing. I've got it marked on the calendar!

I just unpacked her book, Southern Memories and I had to sit down and
reread it. I like her style of southern cooking too...

In style, tact and diplomacy, Nathalie DuPree is old money Savannah. Paula
Deen is Bugtussle.

Yeah, that's a good way to put it, lol.
The only thing that concerns me about Nathalie is how spacey she
sometimes acts? I have wondered before if she wasn't heavily
(self?)medicated while taping her show?

Nevertheless, I've always been partial to Nathalie. Some people are just
spacey. Julia was, on occasion, as well.

That may be true today, but she got where she is because of the good (in
some people's opinion) food. It was a popular place long before TV. There
are lots of people that just want a plain, hearty meal like mom used to
make.

Ah, the Mid-South Fair brings back a couple of memories. I saw a microwave
oven demonstrated there in 1957. It looked as big as a refrigerator. They
cooked bacon. I won two parakeets at one of the contest booths. A pig bit
me. Those things you don't forget! :-)

from Atlanta to Memphis ...
