Ken,
I'm sure you'll have plenty of vigor with that clay beneath. Hopefully the clay isn't to compact. Do you have drainage problems after heavy rains? If so, be carefull not to let the vines over grow and crowd the canopy. I would use the VSP if I were you. The trellis system you showed might have to much foilage if the area is damp often.
