Default cool whip

Can anyone tell me how much cool whip is in a carton? There are so many
recipes with cool whip and dream whip!

Yes, it is filled it all the way from bottom to the top. The bigger Cool
Whip containers have more than the small Cool Whip containers.

Why would you want to use plastic food anyway?

depends on which size you buy. there is 8oz. in a cup. i
think Cool Whip comes in 8oz. or 16 oz. cartons... i'm not
sure because it's one of those things i refuse to buy. any
recipe that calls for Cool Whip is probably immeasurably
better with real whipped cream
i know it sounds snotty, but stuff that is artificially
sweetened or made with artificial ingredients like Cool Whip
makes me ill. i *can* taste the difference & my body rebels.
on a related note, am i really the only person that can taste
the fake sugar aftertaste of Splenda? i've not met anyone else
that admits to being able to detect any difference between
Splenda & sugar.

The only time I use Splenda is to sweeten coffee, but I usually take my
coffee black. Only very rarely will I ask for sweetener of any kind for my
coffee. So I can't say I can taste it because I rarely use it. Still, I
suppose if you must have sweetener and can't do sugar, it's better than
Sweet & Low. Now *that* I can taste... even in strong coffee.

Heh, heh! Good answer Ed. All it takes is a look at the container.

> Why would you want to use plastic food anyway?

Well now......I prefer real whipped cream, but I am not adverse to using
Cool Whip on occasion. It is very convenient sometimes. I always have the
Vons generic version of Cool Whip in my freezer. Taste? Well, it is
different than freshly whipped cream, but the taste it tastes pretty good.
They are two different products and have different tastes. If someone is
trying to pass Cool Whip off as whipped cream, they are being silly. Cool
Whip is fine and tastes good for what it is. No reason to dismiss it just
because it is not "real" whipped cream.

cup is volume Cool Whip is weight. Different 8 ounces.

Actually I meant I need to know how much real cream to use if a recipe asks
for 1 carton of cool whip. Sorry if I caused confusion, I don't think cool
whip is available in Australia. I'm going to substitute real whipped cream
for the cool whip.

Depends on the size of the tub. I believe it comes in 2-cup, 3-cup, and
4-cup plastic tubs in the frozen food section. And several variations -
light, non-fat, extra creamy, strawberry, and chocolate. Dream Whip is
a powder product that is combined with milk and beaten.

ok. i don't think i've ever seen a recipe containing Cool
Whip, but i'd substitute whipped cream by weighing on a scale.
is it safe to assume in recipes that call for something in
oz. they don't mean measured in a liquid cup (volume)?

I don't like it. I can *definitely* taste it. Still, it's the best of
the substitutes so far, I think.

That stuff is vile. Worse than Nutrasweet, IMO. There must be a
Splenda gene for tasters and non-tasters because so many people say "It
tastes just like sugar." (Um, NO it doesn't!)

well, there *is* a taster gene for aspartame & saccharine, so
why not one for sucralose?
not all kids react badly to artificial colors & flavors
either, so i suspect a genetic component there too.

It must depend on a number of factors. I generally detest artificial
sweeteners and would rather have things sweetened than to use the stuff. I
especially dislike diet pop. My mother cooks with Splenda because she is
diabetic. I have had some of the things she has cooked with it and to tell
you the truth, they were pretty good. She even made butterscotch pudding
with the stuff, and I didn't think that would be possible. It was good.
She has also served me apple crisp and fruit pies made with it. But it
still tastes like crap in coffee.

It tastes like nasty vile chemicals to me too. I can also taste whatever
chemical they put on bagged lettuce and cilantro tastes like soap.

Oh I can detect a difference hands down. I bought one sm box of Splenda
to try. It is vilest stuff I've ever tasted! I don't do artifical
sweeteners anyway but Splenda was supposed to taste like sugar. It
doesn't. I had a major headache almost immediately after ingesting
Splenda followed by nausea.

Are you sure that was Splenda and not crystal meth? :-)

I can taste it in coffees and teas (and it gives me headaches as well).

hmmm, and the big cereal companies are using it to replace
sugar in thier kid cereals (contains 1/3rd less sugar! and
1/3rd more crap...). nothing like making the kid sick before
packing him off to school...

I also taste the chemical in the bagged lettuce and salad greens. I don't
seem to taste it in the bagged coleslaw mix or bagged spinach. I love
Cilantro.

After I tried to get rid of that taste in bagged lettuce I quit buying any
kind of greens in bags. I like just a little bit of cilantro in salsa. It
doesn't taste right without it and too much doesn't taste right either. But
I don't like it in anything else.

Cilantro is one of those things I don't use a lot of. DH and DD really
dislike it so I go very light. I grew it one summer. It is a very easy
to grow and prolific herb! It's a self seeder too so once you get seeds
you are stuck with it for life but if you use a lot that's the way to go.

It may be that she has a recipe that calls for one carton of Cool Whip
and she wants to know how much that is so that she can convert the
recipe to whipped cream.
Brand name recipes are extremely frustrating because over time the
content sizes change. What used to be a 16 ounce can is now a
14-ounce can, etc. If the original recipe doesn't state size, you are
pretty much out of luck years later for subbing unless you took notes.

Nothing is better than the real thing and I think there
is nothing that beats REAL whipping cream and prefer to use
it in place of any kind of frozen whipped topping. I do use
Cool Whip though in some desserts and salads, where fold it in.
Hubby likes it on top of Jell-O, but for a topping, I'd choose
whipping cream any time.

Some say Dream Whip is hard to find in their stores now
(depending on where they live, I guess)) and some recipes
call for it, so I still use it on occasion.

I'm not exactly sure what a 8 oz. container of Cool Whip
measures out to in cups, but it seems to me, it's about
equal to 2 cups whipped cream? I don't measure...I just
make a wild guess by looking at it.

Also nothing beats REAL butter, sugar, salt, cream (like for coffee)
either and I will use the real stuff in moderation any day instead of,
but Cool Whip will suffice fr some things, if don't have whipping
cream, but no one can say it's better, and be honest. I especially
won't touch anything made with a sugar substitute!

I use to buy the bagged veggies and greens often,
but then there was a lot of problems with bacteria
in certain bags and making people very sick, so I quit
buying it, as didn't want to take a chance.

I love cilantro. I even stop and smell it when I'm
walking by in the produce aisle! :-) I use it often
in my cooking and the more, the better, AFAIC.
