I you want to take bets, you should always pick that God exists. If you're right, you're a winner. If you're wrong, it won't matter at all. This is called "hedging your bets."

Pascal's wager is actually a matrix. There are more than one simple
jewish god to bet on.

That would be good. Reminds me of the old creamsicles.

Orange sherbet with vanilla ice cream.
You can buy that in large containers too.

I actually had a friend once that was well versed in many
different religions. She told me that she prays to ALL the
gods, "That way, I've got all my bases covered."

I suspect she was joking but like me, do believe in a higher
power of some kind. And why not? You can't lose that way.

Only your self-respect, if you are convinced that humans
evolved to need to believe in gods and invented the whole
concept because they're afraid.

You have a point there, to say you believe is sufficient. It accounts
for why all these moralising Christians who believe like Bakker et al
behave in unacceptable ways while proclaiming they give their all to
their god.

Pfffft. I live my life as a nice person. I know what's
right and wrong to do. I do not believe in any of the
religious interpretations or stories. I do not obey any
of the religious rules because of "going to hell" if
you don't.

I just do what I do and I never worry about an afterlife.
If there *is* a god and some "judgement" later on, I'll
stand on my lifestyle. I won't "grovel at his feet,"
I'll look him in the eye and shake his hand and say,
"Damn...so you are for real"

If I'm not good enough to "go to heaven" what ever that is,
so be it. And if dying is just being dead, no worries.

Bottom line, I never think about religion until it's
brought to my attention. This worries the heck out of
my bible belt mom. All of those people are obscessed
with religion and only their version of it. All other
concepts are doomed.

They are mostly just phonys following the money trail.

Worldwide seems to be a belief in a "higher power." There's
always that common tread but different interpretations vary
greatly and often very oddly.

I don't believe in anything any preacher, priest, monk,
whatever says. I just live a good life and if that's
not good enough to a higher power, so be it.

Many religious leaders/preachers are after the money and
the power it gives them. None of that nonsense for me.
I ignore them all.

Here's a funny: My mom is 89 now and doesn't want to
die until I'm "saved." I think I've discovered the
"fountain of youth" here (for her). heheh

You may live your life being kind and generous to people, but that is
not good enough for some religious people. Some might want to stone you
to death for eating pork, for exposing your ankle or wrist, for not
attending services and be seen praying publicly, for having an image of
the prophet.

Yep. That's the entire problem with human interpreted religion.
No tolerance at all. "My way is the only right way."

They have no physical proof of the things they believe and it becomes a
matter of faith, accepting it because no can convince them otherwise,
not to mention the indoctrination and coercion. They pretty much force
people to go along with and there good vs. evil, us vs. them mentality.

I figure if I'm wrong and there is this afterlife, then I shall go to
hell and meet up with 9/10s of my friends, in all my life I have only
known two (and they did not profess to be Christian) who lived what I
would think would be the epitome of how christians should live.

But what if the Muslims are right and the surest way to heaven is to
blow up as many non-Muslims as you can?
