I don't frequent taverns nor am I attractive so I guess it's off to a
booth for me so I can hide. No one can ogle my body there.

Don't be so uppity. Most other nationalities have many of those
fast food places that do quite well.

They might not be your "cup of tea" but then you don't even
like a cup of tea.

Certainly, but you won't see those people in food forums, generally
speaking.

At least I'm consistent.

Duh. It's also a name of a decent place to eat at here.

Not our fanciest by far, but not bad.

LOL where Don and I are tea drinkers. Coffee sometimes when out or at
work. I have a coffee pot... somewhere... buried under dust bunnies...

123 Truck Stop, Clemson SC (Now Paw's Diner). Menu largely the same
except the scrap soup line seems gone. Used to have 'scrap soup of the
day' for 50cents for a big bowl. Often dried bean based. Unused
veggies (never served to customers and kept food safe) would get tossed
in there. Nothing you will see on a regular 'recipe menu' ever but
very common to the era in the south.

PTSD can be real, but I agree. It is over diagnosed.

What is our main hurricane prep done also at New Year amd 4th of July?
We clear under the coffee table. It's a BIG ASS one that can seat 8
easy in Japan type eating with lots of center room. Under it, Don and I
can rest with pillows.

It's been 52 years since VietNam and 30+ since Beruit. He hasn't
dragged me under there in a long time, but it's there and there for a
reason. He knows it's there and that helps him stay steady.

This local lady has no real PTSD in my way of understanding it, having
dealt with it.

Today, PTSD is a 'golden ticket' for disability but if diagnosed in
Vietnam, all doors are closed. Don gets 10% of his retirement pay tax
free. It works out to an extra 15$ a month.

Our 'silver ticket'? Don has a (classified reasons) Silver Star. VA
loan was free. It won't show on searches because the citation was
classified.

They have. It's not 'shocking news' that if you and your buddies wear
a mask, you and your buddies are safer.

When I read cshenkie's posts, sometimes it feels like I don't know any
English.

If I understand correctly, her husband has PTSD and sometimes drags
her under the coffee table?

Not being familiar with your town, it was the first one I found that looked fancy and wasn't
just a steakhouse.

Only one within walking distance is "Beach Pub"
Very popular locals restaurant with excellent food.
It's a medium priced restaurant.

Only about 1/4 mile from me. Even for that one, I'll
ride my bicycle.

As it's very popular and not large, Jill and/or Joan would
never get a table for one there during breakfast, lunch,
and dinner times.

Sounds right. He doesn't like hurricanes...and the normal season
is almost upon us. But also doesn't like any explosion sounds
like
New Years or 4th of July. Probably thunderstorms too.

Very real threat to him (based on his past memories of a war)

I worked with a guy that would get underneath his bed during
thunderstorms.

I also had one ferret that was terrified from thunder.
If I was home, I'd hold and comfort him. I felt bad when I
was at work during a thunderstorm and not there for him.

oh well.

Really? They would refuse to seat a single diner at a table?
Their website seemed so friendly and welcoming.

They do have a small bar off the dining area. During busy times
they might seat you there. Not many drinkers-only there.

As I said, it's popular but small dining area. During the lunch
and dinner rush times, they wouldn't want a single taking a
table. I have no idea though, how they handle that. They are
friendly and welcoming.

Perhaps they would seat a few singles at a larger table.

As I've mentioned too...they are featured on an episode
of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives" but I've yet to see
that. It's been several years now since they did that.

LOL where Don and I are tea drinkers. Coffee sometimes when out or at

That wouldn't work for me. I won't sit at the bar because the chairs
are always uncomfortable and I won't share a table with strangers.

The great thing about owning a small business is that you can run things according to how you feel you should - not how other people or stock holders want you to. Shopsin's General Store had a firm policy against seating tables of 5. Perhaps they still do.

I don't like sitting at the bar because there is inevitably a "lip" (for
lack of a better word" around the edge of a bar that simply isn't
comfortable when trying to eat a meal. As for sitting with strangers, I
doubt I'd like that, either. (An exception would be a Japanese
teppanyaki grill where the chef cooks right at the table.) The bistro
where I went alone on my lunch hour wasn't a big place, either, but they
seated me at a two-top. The place was called 'Jarrett's'. Looking
online, it appears they closed their doors back in 2010. That's a shame
because it was a nice place and the food was excellent.

Sounds like he's saying they're too busy and too small to accommodate a
"single" diner. Or does it mean they wouldn't let Gary in unless he ate
at the bar or agreed to be seated with strangers? IMHO, no smart
restaurant manager should ever turn away a paying customer.

In my experience all things being equal bar seating is much more
comfortable than chairs at a table... I usually find chair and table
height are too low and chairs are too close together so as to squeeze
more people in... chair seats are typically unaphulstered and if the
chair has arms it's like being squeezed in a vice... it's like they
assume that every patron is the same size. Booths are worse, the
seats are always too close to the table, like they assume everyone
weighs 90 pounds or less. Most restaurant table seating is tantamont
to tourist class airline seating. Bar seating is always comfortable
as they don't want the drinkers to leave. Even the lighting at a bar
is much better than at the tables... and bar tenders are far better at
caring for patrons than waitstaff. Often I'd have reservations and
have a drink at the bar before my table was ready and I'd decide to
have dinner at the bar rather than the more crowded noisy dining area.

Actually most popular restaurants insist on reservations, and now with
the virus one needs reservations for a haircut, a manicure, or to pee.

Very few restaurants would give up a table for four for a single
patron... especially not for Gary who looks like in his white bib
painter's coveralls he'd likely not spend more than $1.49 on a big
mac, and has a coupon for free fries and would glom a dozen packets of
ketchup. hehehe

Popeye, the bar is also lots closer to the crystal palace.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if I had decoded it correctly.

These days with "social distancing" I doubt many restaurants have tables
very close together.

The reason many restaurants have un-upholstered chairs is because of
spillage. It's much easier for the server or the bus-person to wipe
crumbs and other spilled stuff off a wooden seat than it is upholstery.
Upholstered chairs would eventually become a haven for germs. As for a
booth, having worked in restaurants I can tell you the table probably
isn't bolted to the floor. You can move it if your huge gut requires
more room.

(snippage)

Not in my experience. I'm 5'3" and most bar stools are tall. The bar
itself is usually set too high (for me, at least) to eat comfortably
because that's not what the bar is intended for. IME, even bar areas of
restaurants also offer table seating.

Yeah, I'd like to know if Gary knows for certain that single diners
would be turned away? He knows this from experience or just guessing
because the place is small?

I'm having a hard time accepting a small restaurant would turn away a
single diner because, horror of horrors, they're using a whole table
just for themselves. I don't know of any eating establishment that
turns away paying customers because there will not be two sitting down
to put on the feed bag.

Gary, check this out. I want facts, not just your supposition because
it is a small place. Get back to us as soon as possible. Hop to it.
