It taught me to avoid those places. Of course, it's possible that American buffet restaurants are great places, but I'd have to catch a plane to eat there. |

A couple of buffets are popular with the locals: the Willows and Camellia Buffet. The restaurant down the street has a popular buffet but that's only on Sunday. I'm not saying that the locals don't like buffets. They do. They just don't go to buffets in Hawaii very often. They probably go buffet crazy when they're in Las Vegas. We made sure to go to a couple when we were there. The buffets there are grand but I'm glad it's on the mainland and not here. OTOH, the best buffet I've ever been to is the one at the Waikiki Prince Hotel. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/100-...bar-honolulu-2 |

I don't think that we can deny that some people overdo it at Chinese buffets. I remember the big niece being excited about plans to stop at the Mandarin all you can eat buffet after visiting us (and not being invited to eat here). I have seen that woman at buffets and pot luck dinners. Buffet means two plates stacked high and several more trips to resupply. Most people do not. The trick is to try a little of a number of items, and maybe to go back for something that was especially good. |

Sorry, but I don't have anything to tell about the visit from her back in July. She and her husband were coming to a wine tasting event to a winery a few miles from her. They wanted to meet us for dinner or to come here. No way. It didn't happen because I told my wife in no uncertain terms that she was not coming here and I was not ever going to be in a restaurant with her again. Luckily, there was a club paddle scheduled for the day and it made for a good excuse.... even though I did not go on it. However... I did have to see her at a family wedding this weekend. Her brother was getting married and it was at her father's yacht club, which is accessible by launch from the mainland. Not a heck of a lot to tell because I passed the word that we did not want to be seated a the same table as her, and I stayed as far from her as possible (away from the bar and the food). The only encounters with her were in the launch to and from. When it was time to leave we headed for the launch about 5 minutes before the ETD. She was on the porch by the bar and had ordered a pot of tea. It seems that she could not walk the 5 minutes from the wedding venue to the launch without stopping to feed the machine. It was pretty windy and the launch was rocking. I was on board and well away from the ramp. I didn't want to have to over a hand and try to save her if she lost her balance. |

Thanks for that, Joan. I was just wondering a ball-park price. That sounds very reasonable to me. I know of one Chinese buffet nearby. I'll have to ask sometime if they do that take out per pound thing. Meanwhile right nearby that one, there's the new Panda Express that I've still never tried. I just never go that way. I do want to give them a try soon. |

The waitress had a little trouble with that concept. She was totally new at the job. She gave us forks instead of chopsticks. That was most unnatural. We tried eating with the forks but it was tough going. I had a big piece of beef fall with a splat on the table - that was quite discouraging. All I can say is that we tried. We ended up asking for chopsticks and balance was once again restored in the universe. |

My problem is that I can't stuff my face with enough food at a buffet to justify a $29 to $65 entry fee. I have seen FOB Chinese guys with huge plates of food at all-you-can- eat joints. I don't know how they do it. They tend to be really skinny middle aged people. I've even seen old Chinese ladies doing this too. It's highly amusing and wondrous! |

The food looks SO GOOD but nothing had any flavor whatsoever. I found that strange that all of them were bland as cardboard. But the one in your area might be lip smacking. |

That is not much more than most decent places charge for an entree, and I can get appetizers, entrees and dessert. There are other Chinese all you can eat buffets with lower prices, but with much less variety and much lower quality food, and much if it deep fired. That is were all the really big people go. They seem to like the idea of unlimited food cheap. |
