Mince and mashed.
![]() It's below freezing cold here on the coast and we're even expecting a bit of snow and icy roads tomorrow. This is weird, weird, weird. The good news is I still have a crazy little hummingbird coming to my feeder. I hope she survives the night. (She's a female ruby throat.) I had to use an ice scraper to get the ice off the bird bath this morning. The minute I filled it all kinds of birds were right there. I sent out a note to the folks on Dataw, if you have a bird bath, don't forget the birds need fresh water. People started sending me pictures. ![]() https://s13.postimg.org/5misksepz/birds-ice.jpg Blue birds! How pretty. Yep, they're thirsty. It's freezing cold down here and all the birds need water. The ones I took pictures of at my small birdbath are a mockingbird https://s13.postimg.org/4x008ilx3/mocking.jpg and a male cardinal https://s13.postimg.org/e4s8p9y53/cardinal.jpg At any rate, it is going to be very cold here tomorrow. I think mince and mashed is a great idea for a hot comfort meal. ![]() For those who don't know, I'm talking about minced (ground) beef cooked with a bit of onion, S&P, water, Worcestershire sauce, cooked down to make a rather clear gravy. Served over hot mashed potatoes. Delicious! Jill |

We've had as many as 15-18 pairs ofÂ* Cardinals out there . Most so far this year is 7 males , didn't count the girls . We get a variety , todayÂ* - most days - we saw Cardinals , White Throated Sparrows , Tufted Titmice , Dark-eyed Juncos , Carolina Wrens , Chickadees , Nuthatches , Red Belly Woodpeckers , Crows , and a Bluejay ... we go thru about 40 pounds of seed every 6 weeks , and keep seed and suet out year round . I'm really concerned about that Hummingbird , there are no insects this time of year and they need protein in addition to the nectar/syrup . We haven't seen a hummer since (I think) late September or early October . There is a guy/website that logs the northern migration in the spring , but nobody AFAIK keeps records of last sightings . -- Snag Ain't no dollar sign on peace of mind - Zac Brown |

We've got a heated bird bath. It's 2 F here. The readout on my freezer indicates 5 F. We're expecting a low of -10 F (IIRC) on Saturday. I'm sure Graham is "enjoying" colder temps than that. I saw a cat drinking from the bird bath a couple of mornings ago. Cindy Hamilton |

Graham will miss our next storm coming tomorrow, said to be worse than the Xmas Day one so they are warning people to better prepare themselves this time for power outages. I haven't gone out to clear the plastic from the tree, temperature has never come above -10C with wind chill factor, maybe tomorrows storm will do the job. |

'Mince' is what my Scottish grandmother called this dish, but of course she was referring to the use of ground beef. The Worcestershire sauce makes all the difference. Jill |

Those are also pretty little things. :-D I haven't seen bluebirds around here lately. I've been putting water and crackers on my back balcony lately. Squirrels and birds seem to remember this location as I do it every winter when conditions are bad. Going to be especially bad until next monday. Snow predicted here tonight from 4-8 inches, followed by a deep freeze -as if it's not already bad enough. Low this morning was 10 F and that's actual degrees not windchill. I've lived here since 1973 and I think this is only the 3rd time it's gone this low. Even lower temps predicted for the next few days. I could sure use some of that 'Global Warming' right about now. ![]() |

I usually only see them in the spring. My mother tried for years to attract blue birds. She went so far as to buy mealworms to attract them. No luck. Sadly, she never saw one. Turns out all she really needed was a bird bath. I'd never seen a blue bird until I put the bird bath on the patio. All of a sudden, they came flocking. They also tell each other where the food is. ![]() I've been an avid bird watcher for decades. I can recognize some of the calls. They tell each other where to find food and water. They know where there are feeders and spread the word. Listen to their calls and you can tell. Right now I've got about 20 birds on the patio. Mostly chipping sparrows and house finches but also a female cardinal, a couple of Carolina wrens, chickadees and a pair of mourning doves. The sun is coming up and they're out and about, looking for food and water. ![]() love watching the birds. My cat Buffy pays absolutely no attention to them. Let some deer walk around out back, though, she watches them like she's a leopard choosing which one to take down. LOL > Going to be especially bad until next monday. Â* My house doesn't ... but I do have the piping divided into "zones" with cutoffs for the kitchen area and the new master bath . I don't have but one outside faucet , and it's down in a hole over a foot deep with a cover over the hole . Since it's upstream of the main cutoff - on purpose , so if the water to the house is off we still have a source - the only cutoff is at the meter . There is one faucet under the house that was installed when we were living partly in the camper , it will be converted to a self-draining sill-cock after the camper is completely disconnected from the house . -- Snag Ain't no dollar sign on peace of mind - Zac Brown |

If I lived where you lived (and didn't have a basement), it would be behind an access panel just inside of where the faucet comes out of the building. It's possible the builder skimped on shutoffs, thinking no one would need to shut off supply to the outside sillcock. To my way of thinking, every fixture needs a shutoff upstream of it. Prediction is for 4-8 inches here near the coast in VB. Then turning bitter cold for a few more days, so no melting of snow or ice until maybe next Monday. Worse thing is we will probably lose power tonight and things might get very cold inside if that happens. I'm preparing for just that to happen. |

You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the total blue. After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3 years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY MOVING IN WITH YOU? That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2 years. Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away. There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo. And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bullshit and visions of grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're manic depressive mixed with habitual liar. Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles. -sw -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

They should be in or near the warmest part of the year down there . I don't know where in Aussie-land JBurns lives , thus my question about his climate . -- Snag Ain't no dollar sign on peace of mind - Zac Brown |
