Who would want their daughter to marry an impoverished putz like
you... and you're obviously an ugli putz because no one here has ever
seen you... I can't imagine some good looking faggot would want you...
you'd be lucky to be with some homely transvestite freak.

Life is not about things. Beauty always fades.

There's middle ground, you know. She could marry an engineer,
a machinist, or a man in any of a host of other occupations.
First and foremost, I'd hope my daughter would become a
professional (engineer, doctor, lawyer, etc.) in her own right,
rather than depend on some man.

I was speaking specifically of the. White. House. I said it earlier. Does she know any
in-depth history of the national historic landmark in which she will be living? That is
why I said I hope she is a fast learner. Most of us don't have that kind of knowledge,
including me, and would have to do some studying in order to properly appreciate it.
As to the matter of taste: have you seen photos of the interior of Donald's NY
apartment? As overdone and garish as Versailles... No, maybe worse.

That's probably the case for every First Lady.

Here are some resources available to the President-elect and his wife:

The White House Historical Association
The permanent White House staff:

OMG - after reading that I googled it

Not a place where you would come in, kick off your shoes and relax!
How ostentatious and god awful. Typical though.

What's there to know that most Americans have not learned from movies
and television? The land was founded by people who looking for
religious freedom, though the first permanent colony was established by
an extremist sect as religious colony. They invaded Canada in 1812 to
annex it to the US and won the war even though they failed in their
aims. The won WWI almost single-handed, even though they spent only
about 6 months fighting in a war that had been going on for four years
and then saved Europe from having to speak German after sitting that
war out for more than two years.

Outsiders sometimes know more about the real history than the people who
live there.

She went to university for a year. Since she allegedly speaks
six languages, she's probably literate in English.

It's not as if she's some moronic American who can barely speak
and read English.

They were looking for the freedom to be assholes. Very American.
(Although not exclusively American, as is demonstrated by a quick
survey of Usenet.)

Were there any movies about the War of 1812? (quick google)
A few. I've seen Buccaneer (1958), but that takes place in
Louisiana.

You're welcome. In honor of Veteran's Day, I'm watching Band of
Brothers, in order to increase my knowledge of world history.

It is a good story. I am curious about the ending and who got to
Hitler's Eagle's Nest first. BoB says it was the 101st, but other
sources say the French got their first.

Yup, Cindy, women can find a great career in STEM. I'm in workforce development and a number of women have found GREAT careers in skilled manufacturing trades. A local agency has a welding program for women, those grads are snapped right up (always multiple offers)...good money and bennies right out the gate.

http://www.jane-addams.org/programs/...-job-training/

"Women in Manufacturing Program (WMP) €” A 32 week, 240 hour welding program that is designed for working female heads of households. The curriculum and certifications are the same as the Welding Fast Track but the program and wrap around support services are customized to meet the needs of this demographic. Classes are held part-time on a case-by-case schedule, as determined by work schedule..."

Interestingly, one of my social worker pals, works for a homeless services agency, transitioned from a civil engineering career, she was specifically a bridge engineer! I asked, "Why on earth did you leave engineering!?", she replied, 'I like helping people..." [!!!]

Many don't realize this, but there is a CRYING need for skilled manufacturing and trades jobs, there is plenty of training out there for those so inclined. Thousands of those jobs here in Chicagoland are going begging, manufacturing and engineering firms would like to expand, they simply can't find the skilled workers they need...and now there are training programs specifically for women, they'd be smart to take advantage!

According to a study conducted in late April by the U.S. Department of
Education and the National Institute of Literacy, 32 million adults in
the U.S. can't read. That's 14 percent of the population. 21 percent of
adults in the U.S. read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high
school graduates can't read.Sep 6, 2013

In Canada€¦ 42% of Canadian adults between the ages of 16 and 65 have low
literacy skills. 55% of working age adults in Canada are estimated to
have less than adequate health literacy skills. Shockingly, 88% of
adults over the age of 65 appear to be in this situation.

I wonder what the average "black" income is vs the average "white"
income. Or education level. Or life expectancy. Or neighbourhood. Or...

Aborigines are doing no better.

Tert, Ivanka's lines are also carried at Macy's. They have announced they will continue to
carry hers, but are not going to carry Donald's, which they had already dropped. Ivanka
designs for different markets, I am sure. She is no dummy.

Thanks for this reminder, I am heavily involved in literacy advocacy (I'm a certified GED and ESL tutor), and these figures are simply staggering, in Chicago alone:

http://www.litworks.org/mission_and_history.html
€œNeed
Over 600,000 adults in the Chicago region cannot read or write well enough to meet the demands of todays economy or attain their own goals.
Half a million people in Chicago over the age of four cannot speak English well.
Nearly 25% of immigrants and refugees in Chicago have an 8th-grade education or below; among certain populations, as many as 45% have left school before the 9th grade€¦€

EVERYTHING springs from literacy, it's as essential as oxygen...

And to everyone reading, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider devoting a bit of time to literacy volunteering, it is pleasant work, and the rewards - for both learner and teacher - are MANY...

Don't know or care. None of my business. Lots of "odd couples" in
life. Could be money, fame, even love.

So is Bill Gates. So was I, for a while, until I went back
and finished my degree.

If literacy increased the Chicago shootings would go down too. That is
a staggering number of people that have a difficult time applying for a
job and if working, mostly low paid jobs.

Many of these people are getting government handouts but with some
education can be solid taxpayers. Tough to break the cycle.

According to CNN
Take income. In 2014, the median household income for whites was $71,300
compared to $43,300 for blacks. But for college-educated whites, the
median household income was $106,600, significantly higher than the
$82,300 for households headed by college-educated blacks, the report found.

Inner beauty doesn't fade and that's what's important. However
Melania will still be gorgeous when she's eighty.

How bitter and unfullfilled you sound. You're as deaf, dumb, and
BLIND as all those pollsters who got it wrong, simply because none are
so blind as those who will not see... buncha biased *******s.
Along with being extremely attractive Melania is a very intelligent
woman who was doing fine on her own before she met The Donald and
would have done fine without becoming a Trump. But you sure sound
like the queen of sour grapes, obviously envious because you married a
nobody, if you are even married... with your extremely negative
attitude and closed mindedness no real man would associate with you.

I prodded my daughter into getting a good education. This way she would
never be dependant on any man. After that, I approve any man that she
chooses. If he's a good person, I don't care what he does for a living
or how much money he makes. If he's right for her, that's all I ever
wanted.

She does have the "backup" though if the marriage ever fails. I hope
not.

He won, Nancy2. Accept them and support them for now. At least honor the
office that he holds. He WILL be your next president. I'm sure his wife
will do fine. First Ladys are basically worthless anyway...really.

Tough to tell the truth!

I've got plenty of edjumication. Worked all my life! Now retired.

I paid 44% of my income fer far too many yrs to have some clueless
politcal dork (or whomever!) tell me I'm not entitled. I'm getting
my own money back.

Finally!....

Not everyone is desireous of living in your low rent district hovel.
I'm possitive Melania kicks off her shoes as does everyone who enters
her home, as do all Slovenians when entering a home because it's
customary and would be rude not to, and it's customary to supply
guests with slippers.

SS? Medicare? Sure I'm getting mine too. I'm talking about the
non-working people that will be getting some of that with little or no
input.

I've been kind of sort of reading these threads and wondering why Nancy2
is so worried about her knowledge of White House history. Does it take
knowledge of a house to move into it? Face it, it's going to be her new
home for the next four years. I'm sure they won't give up the penthouse
and other places, dinna fret.

This thread seems to have something to do with a possibly gaudy
re-decorating scheme. Perhaps she won't like the china. She might make
the "west wing" look like a brothel. Who cares? Only the first family
goes into those rooms.

This is a very odd thread.

Historically, there's absolutely no reason why the incoming First Lady
*should* know anything about the history of the White House other than
this is where we live now.

Preferable? Of course. I know the White House was burned during the
War of 1812 and rebuilt. Is it important for the First Lady to know
that? I'm not so sure.
