Thunderbird is an email clinet program that tries to pretend it's also purports itself to be a Usenet newsreader program, and does not know the differences between SMTP email and Usenet newsgroups! POS software!! Run away.

I had no problems with Thunderbird until I had to change the service
provider.

Never heard of that one, but not a lot surprises me with T-Bird.
Maybe consider using a proper newsreader? The times I've tried any
Mozilla based email client for Usenet, well, it invariably gets messy.

As I replied to JK, the problem arose when I changed providers. I never
had any problems with Outlook Express, of blessed memory:-)

I lost my last free versoin of Free Agent newsreader last time I did a wipe/reload of my WinXP computer, and have not yet gotten another real Usenet Newsreader program. Suffer! ;-)

There's so much buried configuration crap in any newsreader or faux newsreader program like Tnunderbird that you probably have to go deep into it's configuration to find what's not set correctly with/to your new provider. All it takes is one little mis-configuration to screw things up for you.

Well that suggests a possible configuration problem and not a provider
problem. Who was your old provider and who is the new one?

Wait a minute... Are you trying to use aioe by any chance?

And you cannot resolve this big 'problem', Mr 'computer engineer'?
A search will reveal somewhere to download a free version of Agent...

It takes 5 minutes to download Free Agent or another free news reader.
Hardly a reason to switch to Google Groups if you hate POS software so
much

He might be full of baloney - but not on the question of Tbird being a
good Usenet client. It's quite crappy for that task, actually.

You say it is not the provider and you changed. How can you be sure?

I use Thunderbird and have not had that problem. I have a worse one with
Windows Live Mail. If someone sends me an email and uses the same
subject header it shows up in the inbox highlighted as if it is new mail
but it is the old one, and I cannot delete it. It happens only on my
deck top. It works fine on my laptop. When using the desk top and I see
it happening I switch to my browser and go to OutLook.

I have been using it for years without problems. I just wish there was a
way to filter our messages posted to multiple groups. Once in a while I
see something really idiotic posted and am surprised that it has not
been cross posted.

Make sure under server settings you have selected 'Authentication is
required'. Oh, and it helps if you know your password.

It seems to be a configuration error but I have gone through everything
and can't find one.

The problem is not with Thunderbird, it's problems with idiotic
cross-posting trolls. There is likely a way to filter that somewhere in
the setting up of message filters. Me, I try to pay attention and
simply delete the other groups when I see something has been
cross-posted. Then I k/f the troll who started it.

As for Graham's problem, he needs to check under settings/server
settings. Make sure "Always Request Authentication" is selected. I was
getting that same error (Not allowed to post). While trouble-shooting I
had deselected that option and it gave me that same error.

Then again, I was also having issues with the news server which is why I
was fiddling around with the Thunderbird settings in the first place.

Perhaps it could be a setting in your AV client? It might be due to a
setting in the OS 'firewall' but likely not. Worth looking maybe? I
like Tbird for both and email and usenet client; I've been using it for
years with nary any problems.

Well, that's some interesting logic. That's like not blaming your
anti-virus proggie for failing to detect a well known virus

Would be easier to use a real newsreader that will k/f the troll
across all NGs with one or two clicks.

You're probably right if the server he is having problems with is
eternal-september. But he hasn't stated clearly which server is
causing him problems. aioe has in the past week had major server
problems - but then RFC is on their ban list, so that's academic I
guess.

I'm sure you know all about limp-wristed seeing as how you were used to an all male environment for years. Probably got to pick who you wanted for the "night shift". Ahahahahahahahaha.
I didn't choose my name but it was my father's name...what was yours?...some Pollack from the old-country?

Not really. I is nothing insurmountable. I just filter the sender or
topic. Being cross posted to a number of groups is usually a pretty
good indication that it is going to be something weird.

"Brooklyn Baby" likes to insult people just to get a reaction. It is like a defensive action so as no one ever gets close to him in any way. He doesn't want many friends and makes sure that the ones he allows are there by his standards (inclusiveness).
