The problem is not with Thunderbird, it's problems with idiotic
cross-posting trolls. There is likely a way to filter that somewhere in
the setting up of message filters. Me, I try to pay attention and
simply delete the other groups when I see something has been
cross-posted. Then I k/f the troll who started it.

As for Graham's problem, he needs to check under settings/server
settings. Make sure "Always Request Authentication" is selected. I was
getting that same error (Not allowed to post). While trouble-shooting I
had deselected that option and it gave me that same error.

Then again, I was also having issues with the news server which is why I
was fiddling around with the Thunderbird settings in the first place.
