Default Would you care if Big Macs were made in China?

Would people who eat (and feed their kids) junk food from places like
McDonald's care if the ingredients were slopped together with Chinese
slave labor?

Just curious.

It wouldn't bother me. I haven't eaten in McDonalds in more than 20 years.

Ditto. I did buy my mom a milkshake at McD's after we visited my father
when he was in the hospital. (The price of a small chocolate shake nearly
sent my mother to the hospital!) But nope, eaten "food" from McDonalds in
at least 20 years. Probably closer to 30.

It has been about 25 yrs since I ate a Big Mac or any other burger at
McDonald's. I have had breakfast burritos and biscuit sandwiches, but
not very often. There are too many Mom & Pop stores and local chains
that are much better than McDonald's.

After posting that I remembered that I stopped at stopped at one McD's
drive thru on two different occasions, both being hot and humid summer
nights, to get a milk shake. One time I placed my order and was told
that the milk sake machine was out of order. Someone told me that they
say that at night because they don't want to have to clean teh machine
again. The next time I waited more than 10 minutes before getting to
the window only to be told that the milk shake. The *******s. If they
were going to lie about the machine not working so that they wouldn't
have to clean it, they could have just told me that when I ordered
instead of making me wait.

Come to think of it, that was close to 20 years ago. I had not eaten
there for years before that, and have not been back since.

They're not "milk shakes," but "shakes." They are still really
crappy.

The Angus burgers are pretty good if they're BOGO, and you ask for
extra pickles.

How did The Simpsons phrase it? "partially hydroginated corn-syrup-

Hubby calls them Anus burgers....says that's probably the part of the cow
they could 'cheap out' on buying.

I last ate a McDonald's hamburger sometime around 1978.
They could use prisoners to make them, as far as I care.
Both for labor and for meat.

"For labor and for meat" Nice.

McD customers buy chineese crap at walmart to save a nickle. If I
were the type to eat from a drive-thu window, and could get it for a
quarter cheaper, I probably wouldn't care if it were made of chineese
soylent green, shipped over in invasive barnacle infested tankers.

But, I'm not. I'll eat at a Mom amd Pop diner with roaches crawling
on the grill before I'll go to a franchise with cartoon toys as part
of the meal.

Well, you save more than a nickel, but you more than make up for the
savings when the dumbed down products have to be replaced.

Not to worry, in a few years, the Chinese will be buying cheap American
crap to save a nickel - at Walmart. Ha ha - that'll show 'em! :-)

I'm not sure if these days "Made in USA" is always guarantee of high
quality. With 100% of the workforce being cheapest Mexicans, the difference
is quite moody. The only thing that is guaranteed is higher price because of
high cost of running the business because of all the administrative costs in
USA.

That is so obviously untrue, I'm surprised I'm even replying. What
the
hell is wrong with you? Can't you even make your lies believable?

Now, if 100% of the workforce were "cheapest Mexicans", what do
you think would be the unemployment rate?

The word is "moot". I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here, and
blame your spellchecker.

You're being kind. A person who doesn't know how to use the word "moot" in
a sentence is worried about Mexican labor? What a joke! (BTW, folks, it's
not pronounced "mute". The word is moot.)

Moot or moody. I appreciate the grammer, word police, but the mood
here is moody.

I think my Mac is made in China. It is 13.3", so it is not really a big Mac.

Clarification: in this case, workforce means production workers, and
yes, they are. Maybe not 100%, but 90% for sure. Others are various
office workers.

My job has been outsourced to some third world country. Competition is
so great one has to compete against illegal aliens for a job cleaning
toilets. I can't afford to get sick. I'm happy to work split shifts at
three part time jobs. My student loan people are threatening to take
my underwear for non-payment. I'm come home to my 58 degree heated
apartment (the house was repo'ed) and I'm wondering if the utility
company would actually shut me off. The cochroaches have left because
the pickings are too slim. Beggers don't bother asking me. And you
want to know if I'd want to save a quarter on my so-called Happy Meal?

Well, I don't eat that stuff, and China is one of those places I have
no desire to experience so I will remain neutral on this one..

Maybe the Chinese could put some lead or sulphur in them and make them
even more nutritionally poisonous than they are now.

Probably not. Being on a tight budget and /or lazy about cooking wins
out over caring about nutrition and health.

Similar mentality keeps the soda and candy companies in business.

While I certainly did not buy anything there, I did check out the happy meal
toy while in Beijing. The toys can be very cool, and can do very well on
eBay in the US. Anyway, I suppose their McDonald's is slopped together with
Chinese slave labor. Or maybe McDonald's is a great job in China. Who
knows.

I would hope the latter. I usually think of slave labor as being in
the factories, but this world has ways of giving a nasty surprise.
Also, that still doesn't mean that the ingredients themselves were not
harvested with slave labor.
In fact, we have that shit going on right here in the US esp. in
places like central Florida.

Hi, I've just finished reading all of your posts and thought I'd throw in my
2 cents.

I am currently working in China.

I've been to Mcdonalds here many times as it reminds me a bit of home
(GRIN).

The food is not slopped together. It is put together as well or better than
the American version.

The workers are not slave labor. They are young Chinese working on their
first jobs just like many of did when we were younger.

The food is compatable with that served in America. Take that as you will.

Think the writer is just trying to get a rise out of everyone by China
bashing.

President Obama was just here and got one of the most (for me at least)
positive responses that I've seen given to any American President.

China has it's problems and is attempting to work through them. But so did
we. I lived in Chicago during the riots of the 60's.

China looks like that now.

I have agreed with most of the tales of fast food woes as I have had them
also.

Just a few thought from someone who actually has eaten in a Micky D's in
China.

Certainly. No reason to assume that what you have learned about (that the
food was made in China) is the only thing that matters. Most likely, there
are 100 others, much more significant (such as, what is really in the food),
only you don't know about them yet. More accurate question would be "should
people eat the food made by big American corporation".

Probably not. If that were the case, Wal(ly)Mart would have gone under a
long time ago.

Oops, I read that as "would I eat a big mac made by slave labor". No,
I would never
eat such a burger, and yes, I would be ****ed if I found out such. I
would also worry about what might be
in those ingredients since they would probably be from China as well.
