The Willamette Week (10/13/2004) just published its annual
Portland (OR) area restaurant supplement. It's usually pretty
useful. The Oregonian's annual supplement usually follows
in several weeks.

I usually read newsgroups, do nonwork email, etc. early in the
am, between midnight and 8:00 am and stay away from such
things for the rest of the day. This means that sometimes I'm a
little groggy. When I first read your message, my initial thought
was "why would you send your dog to a veteran?" (Now concerned
that my question mark and quote mark placement may be incorrect,
and not being able to locate my style book)

I am, however, a veteran. I'm not a veterinarian. I am (GASP)
an attoiney.

I'm sure he's a great veterinarian - probably the best in town -
Oh what the heck - the best in the western hemisphere! If
he sets up shop in town (and I'm able to figure that out)
I'll try to send some business his way.

precisely, although "PDX" is often used in casual conversation as a
reference to the city

>That said, I still don't "get it".

Merely memorializing the recent pummeling which usenetlyn took
when she (I think - excuse me if I'm wrong) started a thread asking
about restaurant suggestions in "PDX" as opposed to saying Portland,
OR. Of the 30 or so posts I saw, about 3 or 4 actually had restaurant
suggestions, and the rest (some quite vitriolic, others more tongue- in-cheek)
condemned her use of "PDX", instead of more clearly identifying the locale. You
might liken it to an armband worn as a
show of sympathy for her plight.

Get it now?

Regards.

AHA. I guess no one outside of Portland refers to it that
way. I hadn't heard it called PDX before although my mother
has lived just outside Corvallis for the last 7 years.

Guess I more or less ignored that thread and yes, I
understand now that PDX is a local term - best left to
conversations with other locals who understand what you
mean.
<S>
I can't imagine why locals choose to call it PDX though!
PeeDeeEX is 3 syllables, but Portland is only two - so it's
not verbal shorthand.

FYI: The residents of San Luis Obispo <California> call it
SLO (pronounced: "slow").

PDX is an airport and you must live in a hanger!

So, now there are 2 Portland posters (any more of you out
there)? I foresee a Portland cook-in on the horizon!
