Is it wrong to make a chicken pot pie without a top crust?

Yes. If I only had one crust I'd skip the bottom one.

Not only do I agree, but I like your attitude, Goomba.

Sometimes I have trouble telling when you are joking. You *are* joking?

I've never seen a savory pie without a top crust. I've never seen a
"custard" pie with a top crust. I'm sure I've forgotten some exceptions.

Yes, I did. Your intent was good and very attractive, but without the
sealed edge to keep the wandering gravy down below, you lost your crusty
crust. I'm glad it tasted good though.

Goomba...doing an extra 12 hours at work tonight while everyone else is
doing the St.Pat's pub crawl in town <sniff sniff> But I've got another
cruise to pay for so I guess it is worth it. <sigh>

Once a week, check the price of your cruise to see if it comes down (you
can get it re-priced up until the final payment). Princess lowered the
price of our Alaska cruise $1,000. I knew prices were falling, but this
was way more than I expected.

Nah, the only pot pies Mom made were Swanson's in the aluminum foil pan.
We loved 'em.

I'd rather have one without a bottom crust. The top crust gets some
flaky crunch to it.

top only would be better - Would that be a Chicken Cobbler?

Agrees with him. I can do without a bottom crust, but I like something
on the top.

A cobbler is supposed to have a thicker, almost biscuit-like crust.
Maybe we can call this a "Gobbler."

Did you cut steam vents? Can't say that it would have prevented all
the chicken lava from flowing, though.

And I now crave chicken pot pie. I haven't had one since I was a kid
and Swanson wasn't made from 50% fat and 50% sodium.

Marie's is good?

When I make that kind of pie, I use a pastry funnel:

http://www.lakeland.co.uk/pie-funnel...F/product/7647

The pastry doesn't get soggy and the filling stays inside the pie

Cute, but I just make little cones of foil to use as a pastry funnel
and that works too.

Depends on whether you put something else on top or not. I've seen chicken
pot pies with biscuits baked on the top instead of a top crust. It might
even be interesting to make a kind of savory streusel topping. But if it's
just a chicken stew staring out from a pie shell, then that does seem wrong
to me.

Man, you guys are fast.
Another thing I'm considering ‹ since as far as I can tell, a pot pie
isn't anything other than creamed chicken with some wegetables in a
crust or two ‹ is to cut circles in the crust* and bake them flat, then
dump‹I mean spoon‹the "filling" on top of a crust disk and top it with
another one.

*OK, FINE! My crust is a Pillsbury All-Ready Crust that's been in the
fridge since Christmas and I wanna get it out of there.

And don't forget to brush the crust with an egg wash to make it look
marvelous as it bakes. Sprinkle it with a little sesame seeds might look
good too....

Take scrap trimmings and cut them into little shamrocks just for the
heck of it. You will need the egg wash to make 'em stick to the top
pastry.

I'd just mix up some Bisquick and drop some dollops on top. Or use the
stuff in tubes.

I don't care for pot pies, I don't eat the soggy bottom crust and I'd only
nibble on the crispy parts of the top crust. I'd have my creamed schiken
over a heap of wide egg noodles.

I've perfomed all sorts of criminal cookery in the urge to clean out
the freezer. If you skip the top crust, do top the filling with
something -- maybe mashed potatoes prettily striped with a fork and
merrily dusted with paprika before browning.

Ixnay on the ashedmay otatoespay.
I appreciate the reply but that has all the potential (in my house) to
create leftovers. If I didn't want to get rid of this pie crust, I'd
be willing to consider the pot pie/creamed chicken and wegetables
mixture over mashed potatoes and I wouldn't bother with an oven.
