Default McD and Tomatoes?

I saw a McD TV commercial for a chicken BLT sandwich, some connection with
the new Shrek flick.

I wonder how they got away with not offering tomato for so long?!

They could even dress up a hamburger the same way and have a "regular
burger" kinda/sorta how Wendy's or Burger king has been doing it for ages.

It couldn't be a quality control issue, could it? They've been cooking up
crap for decades.

What are you talking about? McDonalds has a burger with a tomato. In
fact, I know I had the "Hamburger Royale" back in the 90's (In Europe,
admittedly) with tomato slices. I forget what the current name is but
I've had it on occasion.
And McDonalds fries still rock when they're hot and crispy. Unlike the
horrid flavorless things Burger King passes off as fries. My ideal fast
food meal would be a Junior Whopper with cheese from BK and a small bag
of McDonalds fries.

McD sells the quarter pounder with onion and pickle or the big mac with
lettuce, onion and pickle.

Maybe an average tomato slice is larger than the meat patty!?

All I remember about their fries was when they cooled off they were
inedible. But that's probably been covered to death in another thread.

Yeah, they did a burger with a tomato back in the early 90s that
featured a slice of tomato, lettuc, and mayo. Unfortunately, unlike the
spartan dab of kethup and mustard they barely apply (mcd invented
cheap), they drowned the damn thing in mayo, to the point where it
was squeezing out of the bun and all over your hands and overwhelmed
the flavor. McD hasn't made anthing good to eat in 40 yrs.

Okay, I'm not really sure how much of this will be valid, but here goes.
Currently, McDonald's has a Fresh-n-Tasty burger. Basically, a wannabe
Whopper.

Back in the day... there was a McDLT, where 'the hot stays hot and the cool
stays cool.' Basically the meat and bottom bun on one side of the package,
while the top bun, lettuce, and tomato (don't remember what condiments were
used) were on the other side of the package. I want to say that this was in
the late 80's though, and not the 90's.

The reason I mention that this may not be valid, is that there's a huge
local rumor that has persisted for a long time in this area (upper East
Tennessee) is a test market for McDs. There were items introduced here that
didn't make it anywhere else. I don't know how much faith I put into this
story. So, if it sounds like I'm farting instead of talking, I'm really not
trying to talk out my ass.

Here (St. Louis, MO), it is called the Big & Tasty, and it's on their
dollar menu almost everywhere in town.

I remember the jingle: "keep the hot, hot, and the cool, cool. It was
the 80s.

Crap is crap. It was McDonalds.

It's called redirection. Keep the customer's mind focused on some bogus
made-up issue while continuing to serve him a lousy hambuger.

I remember both the McDLT and the Big & Tasty. (2 different burgers).
They were sold in selected MickeyD's in the northeast, but no longer
available where I live. They also had a double cheesburger L.T. for
$1.29 a few years ago.

For a chain burger joint, they were pretty good, and I'd go to McD's
more often if they were still on their dollar menu.

I think the quality of the product depends on having a good manager in
the store.

I have a 5 year old, and not a lot of money. A B&T w/ cheese and med
fry (with a free water) is less than $2.50 including tax.

If I eat there, I get 2 B&Ts, no mayo, no ketchup, extra pickle. I
take off the lettuce and tomato and eat those first. Then I take two
napkins, and use them to smash each patty against the bottom buns,
which saturate with grease, and the bottom buns and napkins go it the
trash. Then I take the two top buns, put mustard on them, put the
patties, pickles and onions back on, and I have a double burger for 2
bucks.
What I SHOULD DO, is throw away ALL the buns.
So, my son and I can both eat for <$5.

Thing is, it's cheap, and I KNOW I'm slumming. I'm not saying it's
good, just cheap.
Tell you, McD's food is more freshly prepared than most of the cheaper
sit down chain restaurants, where nearly everything is pre-cooked, and
a damned sight better than twelve grilled hot dogs.

I saw that on their website. That's the first I've heard of that one. They
sure aren't advertising it here.

Can't answer your question about McDonalds but wondering if anyone
remembers Burger Chef which was founded in Indianapolis and ruled over
every fast food joint in Indiana for decades before locking the doors in
the 1980's.

I always felt they had the better burgers - Big Chef- & prices and still
miss this corporation and their condiment bar for sandwiches which I
always pile on the onions -after work hours-.

Go west and try a burger from In N' Out sometime!

I agree though, McDonalds has had at least one sandwich with tomato on
it for years. Back in the early 80's (I think), they had the McDLT (or
something like that) where the sandwich was served in a special
container with the cold ingredients separate from the rest of the
sandwich and they used to advertise it as "keep the cold food cold and
the hot food hot" or something to that effect.

I believe they used to have the McLean. It had the meat patty on one
side, on half the bun, and the produce (including tomato) on the other
side, on the other half of the bun. My wife used to eat these, although
I never did. I can live without tomato, and what's the point of eating
a big greasy burger if it doesn't have grease?

I know here in Utah, McDs sometimes use us as a test market. I have no
idea why since so many here prefer quantity over quality, but I guess
that fits with McDs. LOL. They did test one burger here that wasn't
too bad, It had Muenster Cheese on it and more like a Kaiser Roll than
a HB bun.

The problem with the McDLT was when they put cheese on it, they put
cheese on the cold half, so it was never slightly melted the way it
should have been.

In Kalifornia:

In'n'Out are good fresh hamburgers. A little plain on flavor, imho.

You should also have a couple Original (ptomaine) Tommy's chili
cheeseburgers.

Then you should to have a double King cheeseburger with everything and the
add-ons at Fatburger! Don't forget the fries! I proudly wear their souvenir
baseball cap.

Then stop in at Fuji Burger in Huntington Beach, a long-time family
owned/operated burger joint for great avocado bacon cheeseburgers!

Everything is more expensive in CA. In Chicagoland the Subway special
is $2.49. In CA it's $2.99.

Not everything is more expensive. For instance, I cited the 99 cents
Value Menu prices at one or more of my local FF prices and Jerry said I
was lying, as they were $1.19 or $1.29 in his area.

For another example, "Two Buck Chuck" is indeed $1.99 at Calfiornia
TJ's, but more expensive elsewhere.

For yet another example, my area is the so-called Pajaro Valley, part
of the larger Salinas Valley. Many vegetables and fruits are available
here more inexpensively than in other parts of the country.

Likewise, nearby fishing towns--Santa Cruz, Moss Landing,
Monterey--often have fresh fish for less than what it costs inland or
far away.

Even some beef is not more expensive here than in other places. Besides
the ultra-trendy Niman Ranch beef from the North Bay, one of the
largest feedlots in the country is essentially due east of me, the
Harris Ranch feedlot off of I-5 near Coalinga.

So, no, we don't pay a lot more here for everything.

So much for everything being more expensive in California....

Yep!

The lettuce and tomato don't add ANY nutrition (OK, tomato adds 5 calories
and 1g carb) The Big'n'Tasty is just a quarter pounder with a mayo sauce
that contributes more fat, cholesterol and sodium to an already junk
additive rich, piece of crap fast food burger.

Ooooh!!! They put lettuce and tomato on it!!! It's gotta be healthier!

WRONG!

Does Burger Chef still exist? My mom has a picture of me in front of a
Burger Chef in Louisiana, and french fries were 15 cents. Boy does that
make me feel old.

No.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burger_Chef

My only fond memories of them are that I wasn't a bit surprised to see
them fail. In a sea of lousy scarf-n-barfs, they were way overdue,
their fare being even more tasteless and nondescript than the
competition. When you can't even make it against the likes of
Jack-in-the-Box and Wendy's, you know you're bad.

Won't the produce add vitamins and fiber? This could be major nutrition
for a fast food junky.

Dan,

You'd think so but not according to their nutrition numbers.

As it reads, they're charging you MORE money to eat a more fatty quarter
pounder with cheese.

Their CFOs are probably laughing as soon as they wake up every morning!

In Chicagoland, you can get a great big burrito at mom&pop burrito
joints all over town for under $5. WHY THE %^&* would you go to
Subway? Subway is crap.
We live in St. Louis, and whenever I'm up there, I take advantage of
that.

Thanks for the link. I must confess, I love Wendy's french fries. I get
them along with a salad, I figure the salad will even things out. lol

I loved their condiment bar. Back in the late 70s I used to eat there
every day, and the reason was the free goodies you could load the
burgers with.
