My folks want to go out to some diner a few miles north of where they
live in the Philadelphia suburbs, then check out the new slot parlor at
the race track near the diner. My plan is to meet my parents at their
house so my dad can show me the new car he bought last week. My dad will
drive my mom and me to the diner where we'll meet up with my sister and
her husband for dinner. I expect that my sister and brother-in-law will
join us for a bit of gambling, but I am not certain.

I wasn't sure if I'd be well enough to do this, but the medication is
working....

DD and three of her friends are getting together with their mothers
for brunch. More to follow. I don't even know the name of the
restaurant. If I'm not paying, I don't ask questions. LOL

That sounds nice...unfortunately my kids aren't really old enough to
cook much. I hope you had a wonderful day :-)

I made Chicken alla cacciatore from a recipe out of my "Naples at Table"
cookbook. I served it with fettucine, garlic bread and chianti.

I have a rhubarb pie baking in the oven that we will have for dessert. It's
not my wife's favourite, but I like it. I was going to get some lobsters
and cook them but she said she would rather have lamb chops. She is not my
mother but she is the only mother in the house so I will let her have her
way on that one. :-) I imagine that we will be having some asparagus with
that.

I was terrified I had forgotten mother's day until I checked and
discovered that the US celebrate it on a completely different date
(the wrong one, naturally ;-) to us Brits. You've probably taken about
5 years off my life.

Nothing. I sent a card and called her. They live in a small town and even
if I knew of any local restaurants that sold gift cards they probably
wouldn't use it. Mom is a 13 hour drive away (or a flight to Atlanta, GA
connecting to Savannah GA and then a 125 mile drive from there to get to
where they live). I'm not a mom myself (unless you count my cat and my
lovebird) so there's nothing special going on here.

Which book is that? I know of two authors that have done books about
Neopolitan foods...one is Colman Andrews and the other is Arthur
Schwartz. At least I think those are the authors. The title is one
I have heard of, and I heard it is very good.

No kids here, but the kitties always get me something nice. DH sent
flowers & called his Mom who lives in another state. For me, Mother's
Day is always bittersweet. I always try to honor my Mom's memory by
doing things she taught me to love - like working in the garden &
cooking. Just finished planting several large groups of beautiful,
blooming bearded Iris she would've loved. Tomato plants go in this
afternoon (Mother's Day is the official "safe" day for planting them
in Oregon). Started out cold & foggy, but turning into a lovely day.
For dinner, plan to grill some lemon/rosemary chicken & red bell
peppers outdoors & serve w/wonderful fresh steamed asparagus and wild
rice.

LOL.. that's funny and I can totally relate. I often lose track of time
in the fall and in distracted moments have been confused a time or two
when reading about Thanksgiving (in Canada) which is earlier than the US
one. I do a double take thinking I'm behind the ball in planning dinner!

It's evening here.
Church at 8:30; coffee and conversation after. Sam's Club for a
notebook mouse and some novel reading; Barnes & Noble to pick up a
magazine that features one of GirlChild's scrapbook layouts. Chatted
with GirlChild and La Twerp on the way to Sam's. Home. Ninety minutes
fiddledicking with the f'ing mouse that will NOT work the way it should.
Out at 3:00 to buy a new camera. Played with camera. Out at 5:00 to
pick up a card reader for an SD card, and 20 wings from Hooter's. THAT
was pretty funny. I think there were two females (other than servers)
in the place. And they were NOT busy. I'm thinkin' most guys aren't
inclined to take their mom to Hooter's for Mother's Day. Pity. Good
wings. Had a visit with Firstborn and learned he's feeling poorly --
and I'm too far away to bring him shicken soup and wipe his fevered
brow. Damn!

What is the British date? I know that Mexico, El Salvador and
Guatemala celebrate it on May 10.

This sounds lame, but since we got back from a weekend trip on the plane at
3:00 yesterday, we were both tired. I threw a pizza on a pizza stone and did
it in the Traeger. Been wanting to do that since I got it a few weeks ago.
Turned out just fine!

My DH made me sweet & sour chicken wings for dinner yesterday -- one
of my favorites that my mom used to make:

Sweet & Sour Chicken Wings

12-16 chicken wings
2 eggs, beaten
2+ C. flour
Cooking oil

Sauce:

1/4 C. pineapple juice
1/4 C. white vinegar
1/4 C. ketchup
1/4 C. brown sugar, packed
1/2 C. honey
1 tsp. salt
1-1/2 tsp. soy sauce

Mix all ingredients in medium saucepan, no heat. Dissolve 2 T.
cornstarch in 3 T. water, add to sauce, mixing well. Cook over
medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until sauce comes to a boil.
Let cook 1-2 minutes, stirring, until sauce is clear and thickened.
Let stand.

Cut wings at joint, leave tips attached to middle pieces or discard
them. Dip wings in egg, roll or shake in flour. Brown in hot oil
in large frying pan over medium-high heat. Place in single layer in
baking pan, bake for 30 minutes at 350º. Lower oven tempurature
to 325º. Brush wings with sauce, bake for 15 minutes. Turn wings
over, brush with remaining sauce and bake an additional 15 minutes.
Great with baked potatos.

I have the "Texas" size, except it's the older model, much better-looking.
Looks just like a Texas offset smoker.

Aha... thanks! It isn't a familiar brand name for me, so I wasn't
sure what you were talking about.
