Congrats. My mother in CT still has no power, and they say the earliest will
be Saturday!

""Nobody has power and there's no cell service so you can't find
anything out or be in touch," said Christina Varga, who owns and
operates the Varga Gallery in Woodstock.

During the storm, Varga's gallery had an opening she called "Irene or
Shine." Now, she's planning a benefit for Helping Hands of New York, a
non-profit aid organization, in order to raise funds for community
members who have been affected.

Although the storm has shut down many of Ulster County's arts events,
the Woodstock Songwriter Festival is still expected to go ahead as
planned this weekend. And for the most part, the local galleries are
open.

"I hope we get some people in town," Eden said. "I don't know if anybody
will be coming, but we'll be open for business.""

"I worked over in Woodstock NY today and they are all out the lines are
laying on the ground and i didn't see one truck in the area.. so Ct is
lucky to be getting their power on now.. NY said it will be at least
another week to 10 days I feel sorry for those people
Thursday at 07:38"

And of course the complaints start :

While more than half of Woodstock sits in the dark, the 151st annual
Woodstock Fair kicked off Friday with the lights on.

And now some people in town are critical that Connecticut Light & Power
restored power to the fair before theirs.

While most of the spinning rides at the fair operate on an independent
generator system, the concessions and other venues take power from CL &
P's grid. The fairs sits at the center of town on Route 44 and on the
main artery for CL&P.

Still, the timing couldn't be worse.

"The fair is a good thing for Woodstock. I can see the resentment you
know. But I'm not going to get upset about it," said Bill Duke of
Woodstock.

Allan Walker Jr. ,Woodstock's First Selectman, said the fair is an
economic engine for the town, generating $4 million a year.

"We want everybody in the town, individuals, companies to have power.
There was no preference to the Fair," Walker said."

That's Woodstock, CT (a very small town), not Woodstock, NY (where
Evelyn lives), which is some 150 miles away. Woodstock CT is in the NE
corner of the state, where many people are, indeed, still without power,
and will be until the middle of next week. Rt 44 is the main E-W road in
the northern part of the state, and it would indeed get power before
side roads would.

Probably Woodstock has less flooding than our area so got less of the
heavy Fema(Federal EmergencyManagement Agency) attention and State
emergency services, shelters, food deliveries, etc. Stores are tryng to
open ASAP and some, including a small markey in Fleischmanns is openas wel
as a big hardware adn lumber stor that was , once again, right in the
flood path. The physical efforts are tremendous with State workers adn
local voluteers really doing yeoman work. Bridges are down all over the
place adn will take some time to replace or repair as will many roads
which have been reduced to either rubble or great clock of cement. I
woudl imagie that many of the Maccadam roads witll be dirt ones again for
a while.

Our local paper carries US editorial cartoons from various sources.
Today's showed a man working from a FEMA lift, restoring power to the
street - the power lit up a billboard saying "Government is not the
solution - Government is the problem".

Right.
