Default Necessity is the mother of invention

Sick of toast and Vegemite/Peanut Butter and canned sardines.... Rooted
through the pantry and found a can of diced tomatoes, a can of mixed beans
and some dried onion. Threw in some FGBP as well and started to boil it.
Then remembered I hadn't used some marinara mix I had in the freezer.
Scallops, mussels, prawns, calamari, salmon and white fish. Boiled the other
stuff for a few minutes with some Italian herbs (dried) and then tossed in a
handful of the mixed seafood til just cooked. It was delicious! But pity I
had no garlic, fresh or minced Still, with a couple of rye crackers it
made a delicious and incredibly easy lunch

The kids had grilled cheese on toast, found half a packet of grated tasty
cheese in the freezer. Alex, the 15 yr old did ask where the ham and tomato
was in the grilled sandwich but after I dragged out the stale "I'll just
pluck some out of my ...." he remembered.

Only canned food I have left now is baby food apples I keep for when we have
pork. We will be taking this right to the line! lol.

I hate coming back from vacation and moving also. When we lived in NY, it
wasn't bad going to PA because it was only a few hours away and I could buy
food for cheap in PA to take home. No problem except for in summer when I
wouldn't want to haul perishables all that way. But okay to do in the
winter.

I do remember having one boyfriend who must have thought I didn't know how
to cook. I was on one of my diets then. The freezer was full of muffins
that I made. They were mainly whole wheat flour, oats, fruit, nuts,
applesauce and some egg whites. No oil. I ate those for breakfast. Bought
lunch at work and usually at dinner out. I kept a couple of cans of
vegetables in the house, probably a can of soup and maybe some pasta and
canned sauce. The only things in my fridge were nail polish, Tab and the
occasional cans of beer that I bought for him. I did once make a huge pan
of granola bars and he ate some of those. And once I had cheese and
crackers. But for the year or so we dated, I had nothing else in the house.

Best of luck, but I am interested in this Vegemite question: I also put Vegemite
in the sardine/peanut butter/devilled ham category. Is there anything that
you would use Vegemite with as a complement? I was thinking...Vegemite,
seafood stew, tomatoes...then it got sort of icky. Do you do anything with
it besides a spread on toast in the afternoons?

Add it to meatball mix, home made gravy, add boiling water to it and make a
drink like Bonox, Bovril etc Put it on mouth ulcers. Once the incredible
pain from salt hitting an open ulcer subsides it actually makes the ulcer go
away faster.. I personally use Kenalog for mouth ulcers.

Great with cheese and tomato in a sandwich or on a SAO biscuit adds
flavor and color to gravy and soups and stews great Vit B source.

So I have been using it as a thing-in-itself, rather than as a possible
seasoning ingredient. Very nice ideas, thanks to both of you.
