Persumably you're going to be grilling and not smoking ;-)

How about pre-made skewers of marinated shrimp with tomatoes and peppers etc
? Pre-marinaded chicken wings, chicken satay skewers, etc....

On the wine thing, my wife and I used to take boxed wine to concerts all the
time. We'd just cut the box open and take the internal bladder out, then put
that in a small pack with just the tap easily accesible from one of the
outside zips. If you also throw a couple of cold packs in the bag, they will
keep the wine cold all day.

Of course, you may want less than 3 litres of wine, or better quality than
you can find in a box, but this method works really well.

I suggest Vienna sausages which will help you look better by comparison.

You mean _grill_, as in over high heat for a short period of time. I
prefer fresh peaches tho'.

If you date likes steak, go for it. A nice filet mignon would be
perfect. Pair it with a spicy Zinfandel or a maybe a Syrah.

A nice fresh pineapple slice is very good grilled as described above. I
would however tone down the wine for a filet, just my opinion, but I would
go with a pinot noir or a merlot. I am a great fan of petite syrah with
prime rib. Maybe top the grilled steak with some crumbles of either Maytag
blue or Clemson Blue?

Never been much for regular syrah.

(excuse the newbie...)

Actually, my boyfriend and I did something similar regarding grilling
over a portable about 3 days ago - take her to the butcher's beforehand,
and she can pick the meat that she wants.

For the record - he had rump steak, and I had lamb chops, with some
interesting sausages - wild boar and apple, and venison.

We just took the beers out there, why not try something like Pimms No.
1? You could (in theory), mix it up with the lemonade or ginger beer
beforehand - but avoid the canned stuff, it's pretty evil.

Easy...Put the wine bottle in a bag, or you could pour the wine into a water
bottle. You might have to not use wine glasses though.

I don't know where you are but around here in WA most of the state parks and
many of the local parks will let you drink in the picnic areas.

Other than that..I don't think most people, including cops, will care about
a couple on a date drinkin a bit of wine. Especially if you don't flaunt it
or act obnoxious.

Cook some steaks or salmon. Serve a salad from a bag. Give her some
tiramisu for dessert. Chicks love tiramisu. It worked for me.<seg>

You decant it beforehand and pour it into a water jug or thermos, or even a
two liter soda bottle. I often make sangria and put it into a plastic
container.

Does a date ever get hot enough to barbecue food ? And how do you make the
hamburger patties small enough to fit on a date ?

Nah. Walk in the park and hold hands, but go to a good
restaurant and pay them to work while you're dating.
Seriously.

There is a time and place for everything. I like restaurants and wine
lists, but the great outdoors is very nice this time of year. I'm sure the
OP has his reasons for cooking outdoors.
