Hello all.
The recent thread on labels and corks raised a question. My stock of empties is a hodge-podge collection, with top inside diameters ranging from 17 to 19.5 mm. My first recent batches are nearing bottling. What size corks should I use on the smaller openings? I plan to seal some (half of each batch, for keepers) with cloth patches and wax - this worked so well on my efforts 40 years ago. |

Jack:
In my experience it's the corker that determines the cork size. The floor corkers that I have used will insert a #9 (23 or 24mm diameter) cork into any of those bottles. However, a corker that pushes the cork through a tapered sleeve (most hand corkers & the compressed air driven corker in my store) will not work well with the 24mm #9 corks. Yes, you read me right. #9 corks from some suppliers are 24mm acroos, from other suppliers they are 23mm across. #8 corks are 22mm.
