The wine is Wehlener Sonnenuhr Eiswein-Auslese 1977, J. J. Prum, AP Nr.
2576511-1178.

The year 1977 was not very good for most normal German white wines.
However in such unripe years, a few decent to good eisweins sometimes
can be made. Today an German eiswein must be of BA or TBA level, but
neither of these can be included on the label - just eiswein. However
in 1977 an eiswein-auslese was quite legal.

This wine is fairly full yellow. The nose is somewhat restrained
compared to a normal auslese in a very ripe year. There is some old
riesling character along with citrus fruit. There is a bit of vegetable
character - perhaps of a leaf character. The wine is really quite rich
in sugar content, but this is balanced by much, but not excessive,
acidity. The finish is somewhat short. Someone, it may have been
Michael Broadbent, described this type of eiswein as the ghost of the
wine of a normal very ripe year. This description seems to fit the wine
discussed here.

Chuck - sounds like one of the better wines made in Europe in that
lacklustre vintage.
