The wine is Hospices de Nuits Cuvee Fagon 1970, Nuits- Saint-Georges,
Les Didiers, bought at auction and sold by by Alexis Lichine. Many of the 70's from Burgudy were a bit light, and many now are far past their peak. I was surprised that this wine was still holding well, but of course it needs drinking soon. The color is fairly light scarlet with some age showing at the rim. There is plenty of acid. Not much tannin is left. The fruit is of a dark fruit - cassis character. There is a hint of earth. While it lacks the complexity and intensity of some more famous Burgundy, it is a very good wine. It is not uncommon for many Nuits to last a long time, and some require considerable age to round out enough. I doubt if many reach old age, as many people who buy wines to keep select the more famous ones. |
