Default Dill pickle salt problem

I have been trying other peoples home made dill pickles, both canned and
done in a crock. All have been so salty, I just about couldn't eat them.
Then after eating them, my feet swelled up. How important is it to follow
the instructions precisely when adding the salt? If the recipe calls for
vinegar, couldn't we half the salt amount it asks for?

Thanks in advance.

Dwayne
