Default KitchenAid Mixer

I need a new stand mixer, and am seriously considering a KitchenAid. Are
there any other brands I should consider?

If I di get a KitchenAid, any advice on which model? My DH is a
grunt-grunt-more-power type of guy, and thinks I should get the Professional
600 model because it has a bigger motor. Is the bigger motor worth the
extra $ and weight?

I do bake bread frequently, so I need a mixer heavy-duty enough to knead a
couple of loaves' worth of dough at a time.

Yes.

Put it this way... You know the old question, if your house caught on
fire and you only had time to rescue five things, what would they be?
Well, assuming that my family members could hold their own, my
KitchenAid definitely wouldn't be feeling the heat. My husband bought
it for me 15 years ago because I couldn't bring myself to drop that
kind of cash; it would have been a bargain at twice the price (or
more). One of the few things I've ever owned that has never ever *ever*
let me down.

Go for it.

Kenwood is another great line. Probably better than KA, but
it depends on what you like.

You mean the pro 6? I prefer it over the other KA models because
it has the most power. I burnt out a few of the smaller ones.

Reg,

It shows the Pro 600 as a 14 cup mixer on the KitchenAid website. The
top-end o' the line for KitchenAid.

Never thought to stand mix mashed potatoes but it's one of that mixer's
stats.

I liked the Kenwood for power and durability. I went with KA
because the bowl lifts up into the head, a configuration I
like better. With the Kenwood it's the opposite, the head
pivots down into the bowl. Hope that makes sense.

KA also has pretty good attachments. I use the grinder and
pasta rollers almost every day.

Plus KA has great customer service. When I burnt them out,
they kept sending me new ones, no questions asked. Heh.

Reg,

Yepper. I went mad with the pasta attachments!

FRESH PASTA!?!? Unheard of in my kitchen until then.

It probably contributed 40 pounds to my weight in a year of 70lbs weight
gain. But it was such a fun mess!!!

Shed 50lbs since Sept. 1 2005. 20 left.

GO FOR IT!!!!

I recently found a NEW Kitchen Aid 600 in an OUTLET store in Vegas for
about $ 200. I didn't bought it because of the airport troubles.

Mine is actually 15 years old working day to day giving us all our
bakery products for our Coffee House in Mexico.

No, it *consumes* the most power... wattage is a measure of electricity
consumed that you're billed for, not usable power output... a lot of
that wattage represents power consumed to produce heat, not shaft
power. Stand mixers are a pretty inefficient way to heat your home.

For the amount of dough kneading any of those countertop stand mixers
can do, unless you are otherwise handicapped, your best kneading tools
are those hooks at the ends of your arms... any normal person can
easily make up two 2lb loaves worth of dough by hand. For the vast
amount/type of mixing done in home kitchens any decent hand mixer is
all that's necessary. 99% of KA stand mixers become overpriced
countertop decorations/statuis symbols... that's mostly why they last
so long. I have lots of stuff that's old and works like brand new....
ask me why my 40 year old top of the line Norelco shaver is in perfect
condition...

Actually I directly addressed the OP's question, instead of
wandering off on a tangent as you seem to do.

The mixer in question *does* put out more power than any other
in the KA line. It doesn't just consume the most, it put's
out the most.

That's what the OP was asking about.

It's true you can't simply compare wattage ratings across
different product lines because of varying levels of efficiency.
It's also true that power ratings would be better expressed in
horsepower or something.

So what? None of that addresses the OP's question. It also
doesn't help him with his buying decision.

You may want to take note that there is a (drastic?) height difference
between the KA 6qt and 5qt models of stand mixers. For example, the 5qt
model (Artisan) fits nicely on my kitchen counter under the cabinets,
but a 6qt model wouldn't work because it's too tall.

P.S. Currently, KA has a 20%-off sale with free shipping, ref.

decide by figguring what you'll be making in the next 10-20 yrs... Like
bread dough and use 4 or more times a week. If you figure to work the
beast hard get the larger motor.

If the beast is going to get occassional use and light stuff...like
whipping cream and mixing up cake mixes...get the smaller motor

I have this model, and while I don't use it near as often as I bet most
of the others who've commented do, I absolutely love it. When I decide
to bake, I like to do monster batches and you can get a triple batch of
cookie dough in this thing. We've also picked up several of the
attachments in the last year and are enjoying playing with those too.
Personally, I consider this well worth the money. Oh, and if the KA
site isn't the best deal, usually http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/ is.
I got mine from there about 3 years ago and they had not only the best
price at the time, but they always have free shipping on orders over $25.

Depends on how much you think you will use it, and what you will use it
for. I have 2 KAs stand mixers -- the standard 4 1/2 qt which I use
for smaller jobs and is small enough to fit under my kitchen cabinets
if I leave it out (which I don't generally do). My other one is the
600 professional line that is the 14 cup capacity. If I want to double
a recipe of cake batter, bread dough, whatever, that one can handle it.
It's big and tough and worth it if you can accomodate the size and the
$$. I also have a KA hand mixer. I've never had a single problem with
any KA mixers I've owned, so I can at least vouch for them in my
experience. My family bought me the 600 line as a Christmas gift 2
years ago from Amazon -- they were having a crazy-good sale. Shop
around and you may find a good deal somewhere.

I don't think so. I had two households several years ago, and when I
outfitted the second household I got the Professional. First I discovered
that I didn't like the snap-on bowl or the raise/lower mechanism. Then one
of the internal gears snapped while kneading bread dough. It's all well and
good to have a powerful motor, but if the drive train can't handle the
power, what's the point? My lower-grade KA mixer works just fine; it's been
chugging away for nearly twenty years.

The Pro 6 is the only way to go. I've made 2 pound balls of dough in it and
it has yet to even break a sweat. A Pro 6 will do anything while the
smaller models will be more limited.

I just got mine from www.shopkitchenaid.com. This is the official
kitchenaid online store.

They carry the Pro 600 (new) for $400... or you can get it from their
outlet shop for $239, shipped free. The only differences between the two
are a 6 month warranty vs a one year, and no mixing shield.

Here's my two cents...

I have a KitchenAid Artisan, 9-cup flour capacity with 325 watt motor.
I use it literally every day and love it. It's reliable, it whips
cream, does smoothies, kneads dough, and is fire-engine red. If I
could change one thing on it, I would leave it as-is.

Is the extra power worth the extra money? The answer is relatively
easy to compute: if you routinely find yourself making quantities of
dough calling for more than 9 cups of flour, then yes. Otherwise, no.
For me the answer is an emphatic "no".

HTH.

I have the 5 qt KitchenAid, and simply love it! It fits on my counter
top tucked under the overhanging cabinets, and slides to the front for
use. I make bread dough for 2 loaves at a time, and do that at least
once a week with no trouble whatever. The only extra attachment I have
for it is an extra bowl, which is terrific to have when I'm making
multiple batches of fudge or divinity in December for the sale at the
church.

My suggestion is that you get either the 5 qt or the newer 6 qt, and
don't bother with anything smaller. Choose a color you like since it
will last for years and years. And whatever you choose, ENJOY!

Definitely KA, and the biggest home-use one you can afford. More power
is a good thing when you're using the dough hook frequently. (And the
"more-power" KA's come with a bigger bowl, I think.)

Thanks to all that responded to my question. I ordered the mixer over the

The Pro 6 or 600 -- whatever the one with the biggest motor is called. I
bought it at the KitchenAid site that someone here recommended -- they have
free shipping and 20% off until the end of this month, so they were the
cheapest.

I did do a bit of comparison shopping at brick-and-mortar stores. Most
didn't have the model I wanted. The one that did -- Fry's -- wanted $369
for it, plus sales tax. Would have come to about $395.

I paid $320 total*. Should be here by the end of the week.

Anny

* Yeah, I know I'm supposed to pay sales tax on my own on the purchase. As
soon as my state tells me what I owe I'll send them a check. ;-)

Sweet!!! Seems you got a good, less-expensive price Free shipping
is a good thing, especially when one considers how heavy these stand
mixers are. You'll have a lot of fun with it.
