Default breakfast oatmeal

I thought I would try to get healthier and try eating hot oatmeal cereal
for breakfast. I tried the microwave recipe for one bowl (mix water,
oats and dash of salt) but it exploded all over the microwave. Guess
I'll have to put a plate over the bowl next time. Assuming that I will
solve this problem, I wonder if you have any suggestions on making hot
oatmeal cereal more flavorful. Thanks.

I cook a whole bunch of steel-cut oats at a time and eat it all week.
(1 cup s.c. oats, 4 cups boiling water, 1/2 tsp. salt; soak overnight,
cook for a few minutes the next morning.) I usually add a little butter
and a spoonful of jam or preserves, or sugar and raisins, or brown sugar.

It's easier than cooking a fresh bowl of oatmeal every morning. I buy
the oats in bulk at the health food store where they are cheap.

Best regards,
Bob

Reminds me of a Scottish mate and his tales of "home". Seems one
standard breakfast food is porridge (what else and they make a big
batch of it, then pour it into a kitchen drawer where it congeals and
you just cut a slice off each morning until it's all eaten. (Probably
helps to live in a climate where your unheated castle is like a
cold-room most of the year.

I do the same, and I add "Almond Dust" to it and milk. The Almond Dust is
a recipe from Gary Danko that includes brown sugar, toasted nuts, sugar,
cinnamon and/or cardamom, lemon peel and salt, all whorled up in the food
processor. It's great on oatmeal, toast, ice cream, and probably lots
of other things.

It will explode even more violently against a cover.
Use a bowl *much* bigger than the amount of cereal that you're
making. I can usually get away with a ceramic bowl meant for
mixing cake batter.

My husband likes to melt cheese over his oatmeal, but you might
consider that counteracting its 'health' value. I like it with
plain yogurt but I have a feeling that others may not.

You're right. I put a plate over the bowl and it got all over the
microwave again. Maybe I should invent a leak-proof microwaveable
oatmeal bowl. :-) So keep trying larger and larger bowls, eh? Thanks
for the advice.

Try using steel cut oats and use a recipe that includes toasting them. I
like this one:

don't forget to mix it up, bananas, granola, fresh fruit is excellent
and healthy.

i usually eat two small breakfasts: before i leave around 6 i have
yogurt, a hard boiled egg or two, and some granola

at work around 9-10 a bowl of oatmeal with fruit if i have it
around...

that way i eat my lunch around 12-1 and don't get so hungry late
afternoon.

The first step would be to use proper oatmeal like the regular, slow
cooking large flake rolled oats, or steel cut oats. They taste much better
than the quick cooking variety, and don't even consider instant oatmeal.
For flavour, I like darl brown sugar, the darker the better. Some people
like it with butter and salt.

Don't cook it but about 90 seconds

Dried fruit - what ever you like. Raisins apricots, peaches, nectarines,
Cherries, Cranberries, apples.

I like to add the fruit before cooking.

Maple syrup also makes a great sweetener.

Try a 4-cup ovenproof glass measure, and lay a paper plate over the top
(nothing tighter). Also back down the power if it boils up too avidly. You
need height, more than you need volume, to accommodate the boiling.

Try cranberries and/or dried fruits for flavor. "Craisins" would probably
work well.

You can cook it in a crockpot or in the oven--350 for an hour.

If you want to use the instant stuff mix it with milk, NOT water.
Water plus oatmeal just equals glue... ugh. Add brown sugar or maple
syrup, cinnamon and raisins/golden raisins to it and it'll be much
nicer. If you don't like raisins, slice a fresh banana or fresh fruit
on top of the cooked bowl, or open a tin of pears. I love oatmeal with
fruit... sounds like you overcooked it - cook it in bursts and stir it
inbetween and it won't explode like that.

You can cook it on the stovetop in a saucepan too - it only takes
about ten minutes...
