having NEVER used it.

As I currently understand it, you can't killfile crossposts in OE unless
you already subscrib to that particular group. This is one of the
reasons so many M$ users download and use other newsreaders like Agent and
Xnews instead of OE. OTOH, I read some websites that allude to the
possibility of scoring (rating msgs for sorting and/or deleting purposes) in
OE. I'm still researching it, though. I DID say I would help, so I'll try
and find a definitive answer one way or the other by the end of the day. In
the meantime, maybe some other readers here can help with this one
.....anyone?

Not true. I use OE and I don't subscribe to these crossposted groups and in
fact have never visited nor considered visiting most of them.

I know you can killfile entire domains by creating rules to block the
senders; I'd be hard pressed to bother figuring out every single ng from
which someone might be cross posting. It's usually pretty obvious from the
subject what is going to be assinine and cross posted. If you have to read
the first post to figure it out, with OE just mark the thread as IGNORE and
don't bother reading or responding to the replies. My two cents.

I'm not sure about other readers. I still use the Netscape reader. All
I can killfile by username by creating a filter or simply hit the "k"
key on the thread and the reader will ignore the thread from then on.

otherwise make positive contributions to the group. I look at the thread
they just started, and filter that entire thread. There are also a number
of key words, as kilikini suggested, that will be automatically
disregarded. Anything pertaining to politics, race, religion, 2 pound
diets, you get the picture.

I see amazingly few of the crap posts. And I get fewer than half of the
posts made to the group by careful filtering, saving me lots of time for
painting my toenails and eating bonbons.

This is because you have a decent newsreader, namely Agent. It looks like
if Lucy wants the same flexibility, she's going to have to change
newsreaders. It appears OE is very limiited in its filtering power.

that stuff here and I don't filter either. The only poster
I'd filter if I could is Dr. C and he's easy enough to

Well Lucy, it looks like if you want to do a killfile on a whole newsgroup
you're going to hafta use another newsreader. OE just doesn't have the
capability.

The most versatile newsreaders are the one's that have "scoring"
capabilities. This gives you a wide range of possibilities from killfilling
by everything in the header to prioritizing and favoring posts by other
criteria. I can killfile by just one word or even any post that has more
than one newsgroup. To kill that lame cannabalism thread, I killed any post
with "snuff" in the header. The word "cardiology" kills off the whole Dr.
Dung crowd as it seems to be the one newsgroup (ng) that is always in the
list. So, no matter the subject or the author, Dr Dung and his minions are
totally absent from my thread list.

The most popular scoring type newsreader for Windows is Xnews. You can also
get slrn (my fave) for Windows. Slrn is a unix command line type reader,
but it's so good I still prefer it to gui readers, which I used for many
years. If you insist on staying with OE, it appears you can get what you
need by using an add on appy called nfilter:

Is there a way to stop the whole cross-posting thread dead in its tracks in
one operation? It's pretty tiresome to block the first sender by going to
Message > Block Sender, then have to block all the cross-posters who
respond to the first message. I haven't figured out whether Tools>Message
Rule> fills the bill and if, so, how.

Dora the Tools>Message Rule thing sort of works if you block specific words
from the subject title. For instance I have Christian, Dr. Chung, stuff
like that blocked (marked as read) so that I don't see those posts anymore.
Wish there was a way to have it see messages in the TO field, but that's not
an option.

Thanks, kili. Looks like Jill's suggestion is the best; namely, "Ignore"
the whole thread. The only irritating thing with that is that all the
"ignore" messages move to the very top of the newsposts list (although
grayed out). Better than nothing, though. Please, folks, if you want to
blast the cross-posters please remove rec.food.cooking from the recipients
before you send it.

Might be different on a Mac, but I use OE for newsgroups on my Mac (OS
9.2) and I have been able to block cross-posted garbage by using a
rule. The configuration is "Do Not Display" "any message" where the
"newsgroup is not rec.food.cooking". And by putting it exactly that
way, if there is anything else in the "newsgroup" field....even an
extra period, it will not display it. So if there are multiple ng
names, it doesn't display it.
That works for me. Try it on OE for Windows. See how it does.

It works for windows also. My rule isn't exactly the same as yours, but
very similar. I also have the same rule set to delete the messages that
fit the particular rule.

It works for windows also. My rule isn't exactly the same as yours, but

Yep, in OE we don't have that option, AFAIK if we did all one would have to
do is make a "," rule for the "TO" field, that way any x - posts would be
deleted, as all the groups in the "TO" field are separated by commas...
