It wasn't part of the curriculum. They got an account for their
coursework (almost all were engineering or computer science dweebs)
and discovered this great place where they could annoy people all
over the world.

Careful to remember though, that people who are annoyed by Usenet would be equally annoyed by whatever else was there, if it weren't. You can't please all of the people all ...

The truth is that Usenet is inhabited by people posting through their own private accounts, and not using the email addresses with their company or institutions' domain i.e., there's no incentive to maintain any sort of standards or be held accountable for the words they're putting out. All that stuff about student accounts being responsible for the Eternal September Effect is a whitewash. Back in the early 90's, the posts were mostly from the domains edu, gov, and mil. These days, most people post from the .com top-level domain.
